Buies Creek, N.C. ? It was a perfect night for Appalachian State wrestling as the Mountaineers routed the Campbell, 41-0 on senior night in Buies Creek. The Mountaineers used two pins, a tech fall, three major decisions and four decision victories to win the match and closes the regular season at 14-7 on the season. Campbell falls to 2-22-1 on the season.
Sophomore Frank Celorrio opened the match with a 8-6 victory over C.J. Gittens. At 133-pounds, senior Terreyl Williams tallied a tech fall victory, 22-7 over R.J. Mazzatta to extend the ASU lead to 8-0. 141-pound senior Marcus Cox notched a major decision win over Campbell’s top grappler, Kelin Bidelspach, 24-10.
No. 13 ranked senior Scott Ervin improved to 33-5 on the season with a pin victory over Bob Matthews at 149-pounds in only 58 seconds. Senior Eddie Hutchinson needed 2:02 to pin Jake Fose at 157-pounds, moving the score to 24-0. Senior Tommy Hutchinson used the riding time point to beat Chris Mazzatta, 1-0 in the 165-pound bout. The victory was the narrowest of the night.
Senior Neal Martin notched a 10-8 victory over Matt Hawksworth at 174-pounds to extend the ASU advantage, 31-0. At 184-pounds, freshman Austin Trotman notched a major decision victory, 13-1, over Kyle Higgins. In the penultimate bout of the evening, 197-pounds, freshman Dylan Temple bested Parker Burns, 6-3 to put ASU up 38-0. In the final bout of the regular season, heavyweight senior Jared Campbell took a slim 2-0 victory over Rob Yonder, rounding out the 41-0 ASU victory.
The 2008 Southern Conference Wrestling Championships is next up for the Mountaineers. It will take place at the McKenzie Arena on the UTC campus March 8. Adult All-Tournament tickets are $15 while children’s tickets (age two through college age) are $10. The doors open at 10 a.m. with wrestling starting at 11 a.m.
