Third Round of Cuthbert Cancelled, Cougars Win Inaugural Event
Kiawah Island, S.C. -- The third round of the Cuthbert Cup was cancelled this afternoon due to inclement weather. The College of Charleston was declared the winner in the women's tournament, while UNC Wilmington took first in the men's tournament. The Charleston men's team finished third. The men's tie at first was broken with Washington State based on the fifth person's score in the second round.
Most of the teams had about four to six holes remaining when rain, mixed with thunder and lightning, set in for the afternoon. At approximately 2:00 p.m. the decision was made to call the round and use the second round results to declare the champions
College of Charleston's Steffi Kirchmayr and Courtney Brink tied for individual medalist honors in the women's tournament. Maryland's Chris Gould earned the same honor on the men's side.
The College of Charleston edged UNC Wilmington for the Cuthbert Cup by two points, 1163 to 1165.
The College of Charleston men's team travels to the Seminole Intercollegiate Mar. 2-4, while the women's team hosts the Pinehurst Cup Mar. 9-11 in Pinehurst, N.C.
Widmer Ties for First at Fighting Camel Classic
BUIES CREEK, N.C. ? Elon’s Samantha Widmer claimed a share of medalist honors with the Campbell duo of Maite Ortiz de Pinedo and Belen Diaz Cisneros while the Phoenix ended up in second place out of 15 teams at the rain-shortened Fighting Camel Spring Classic women’s golf tournament Tuesday at Keith Hills Country Club No. 1.
After thunderstorms passed through the area during Tuesday’s second round of the two-round, two-day, 36-hole event, the course was declared unplayable due to wet conditions. Monday’s 18-hole scores will stand as final for the 15th-annual event. Widmer followed up her 38 on the front nine holes with a 36 on the back nine of the 6,012-yard course Monday, pulling into a three-way tie with Ortiz de Pinedo and Diaz Cisneros with a two-over-par 74.
With six of its players finishing among the tournament’s top 11 individuals, host Campbell (301) claimed the team title, followed by Elon (315), Memphis (316), Kennesaw State (321), Illinois State (321), Gardner-Webb (322), James Madison (323), Georgetown (325), Wichita State (326), Florida Gulf Coast (327), Old Dominion (333), USC Upstate (337), Radford (339), Longwood (340) and High Point (350).
Danielle Mills (Tied-6th/77), Kelsey Johnson (Tied-33rd/82), Frederique Bruell (Tied-33rd/82) and Taylor Johnson (Tied-39th/83) all represented the Phoenix in the 77-player field.
The Citadel Golf Team Finished Sixth in the B-CU Spring Invitational
Daytona Beach, Fla. - The Bulldogs wrapped up the Bethune-Cookman Spring Invitational, finishing sixth at the 36th-hole event.
Junior Kasey Owens led the way for the Bulldogs finishing tied for 18th place overall, shooting an 83 and 90 to finish out the Spring Invitational with a 173. Freshman Sheri Rockefeller improved to finish 23rd with a total score of 183 after shooting a 93 and 90. Katherine Hardina, Christine Clark, and Dorien Shepard rounded out the scoring for the Bulldogs.
" The team played in very tough conditions," said head coach Lori Hatcher, "with a couple inches of rain falling in a short period of time, but they battled through it. Learning to play in all types of weather will only make them stronger golfers."
Bethune-Cookman won the Spring Invitational by ten strokes over second place Embry-Riddle. BCC’s Fern Grimshaw won the tournament shooting three over par after shooting 74 and 73, scoring a 147 for the weekend.

Catamount Golf Slips to Sixth Entering Tuesday's Final Round at Cuthbert Cup
Andres Cuenca tied for fourth five strokes back; Desiree Karlsson tied for third, three in arrears
Kiawah Island, S.C. - Western Carolina's men's and women's golf teams each slipped into sixth place after Monday's second round at the Cuthbert Cup held on the Osprey Point and Cougar Point Golf Courses. WCU junior Andres Cuenca fell from first into a tie for fourth, five strokes off the pace, while sophomore Desiree Karlsson is in the clubhouse three strokes back, tied for third entering Tuesday's third round.
Due to the threat of impending weather, the final round has been changed to a shotgun start by tournament officials with teams teeing off at 8:15 am on Tuesday morning.
On the men's side, WCU, which led after the opening 18 holes, stands just six strokes in arrears of both UNC Wilmington and Washington State (579) after carding a team 293 on Monday. Host College of Charleston is third one stroke back at 580, followed by Maryland (581) and Richmond (582) rounding out the top five.
Cuenca, who ranks tied for third with nine birdies, shot 75 in the second round to slip into a tie for fourth in the standings at 142. Senior Matt Cook rallied with a two-under, 70, on Tuesday to move into a tie for 22nd with freshman teammate, Caleb Marsh (73-74=147). Rounding out Western's scorers were junior Dustin Funari in a tie for 33rd at with a two-day total of 150 and sophomore Ricky Stout tied for 47th at 153.
In the women's tournament, first-round leader College of Charleston continues to lead by three strokes over UNC Wilmington, 586-to-583. Maryland (593) stands third followed by East Tennessee State (596) and Miami (FL) in at an even 600.
Karlsson, who was in a four-way tie for first-place on Sunday, is in a five-way tie for third after Monday's second round three-strokes back at 145 to lead the Catamounts, many of which were battling flu-like symptoms. Freshman Josefine Sundh, playing on her birthday, shot a second-round 76 to stand tied for 10th, three strokes behind her fellow countryman.
Rounding out WCU's scorers were freshman Katja Dammann in a tie for 26th (74-78=152), sophomore Elin Mickelsson in a tie for 43rd (79-77=156) and senior Kandy Carland in 67th.
In a twist unique to the Cuthbert Cup, both the men's and women's teams will be paired together in Tuesday's final round.
