ASU's Thomas and Furman's Bridges Earn NCAA Scholarships

Appalachian State senior volleyball standout Dianna Thomas and Furman senior track and cross country star Elizabeth (Page) Bridges each were among 58 NCAA fall sport student-athletes to earn NCAA Post-Graduate scholarships.

 

Thomas, honored as a CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-American, is a right-side hitter is the first Mountaineer since the 2002-03 academic year to win.

Thomas recorded 395 kills, 306 digs and 86 blocks as she helped lead the Mountaineers to a second-place finish in the Southern Conference this season. She hit .255 and became the school’s all-time kills leader with 1,476.

Along the way, Thomas was named the SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week on October 31 and was named second team all-conference at season’s end. The right side hitter will graduate in May with a degree in exercise science, and has held a perfect 4.0 cumulative grade point average.

 

Bridges set school record in the 3,000m Steeplechase in 2007 with a time of 11:10.32, breaking her previous record of 11:19.38. Bridges set a career-best time of 10:40.06 in the 3,000-meter run at 2006 Clemson Invitational and set a career-best time of 5:21.94 in the indoor one-mile event in 2005. In cross country, she set a personal-best time in 5-kilometer event with a mark of 18:54.18 at the 2006 SoCon Cross Country Championships. She is a member of the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll.
