The Citadel 4, Wofford 3
SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Wofford men’s tennis team fell 4-3 Monday afternoon to league opponent The Citadel in its Southern Conference season opener at the Reeves Tennis Center.
Senior Andrew Stubbs won at the No. 1 singles spot defeating Daniel Dossetor 6-4, 6-3.
Sophomore George Kernodle was victorious at the No. 2 position after missing three weeks of singles competition due to an injury. Kernodle defeated Yufo Sutantio 6-2, 6-2.
At the No. 6 slot, freshman Paul Bartholomy beat Frederic Petrilli 6-2, 6-0.
“Today’s match was a great college tennis match,” said head coach Rod Ray. “The Citadel competed hard and came back strong after being down 3-2. I thought the Citadel did a very good job and deserved to win today’s match.”
The Bulldogs clinched the doubles point with victories at the No. 1 and No. 2 slot. The Terrier duo of freshman Alan Donald and sophomore Christopher Williams defeated Martin King and Petrilli to claim the No. 3 doubles spot.
“Although I am disappointed in the outcome, I thought we put up a good effort today,” Ray added. “The doubles point was very close and so was the singles. We have gotten better in the last week and I believe our best play is yet to come.”
Wofford returns to action Wednesday in Rock Hill, S.C., at 2 p.m. in a contest against Winthrop.
