Moutaineers Have Strong Showing at Virginia Tech Invite

BLACKSBURG, Va.- The Appalachian jumpers had a strong showing at the Virginia Tech Invite as numerous took home impressive finishes. There was no team scoring at the meet, but the competition proved to be good practice for next weekend's Southern Conference Championships.

In the long jump, coach Damion McLean took part in the action as he placed first in the long, jumping 25-6.25. Junior Ricky Harris was not too far behind, as he took home fifth place in the event with a jump of 23-8.25

In the triple jump, senior Joel Gaddy had a standout performance as he took home first place and jumped 51-8.50. His jump moves him into fourth on Appalachian's all-time list and earns him an NCAA provisional bid. Gaddy improved on his previous personal best of 49-1, which was recorded earlier this season. Teammate Mark Sturgis was also solid in the event as he finished third overall, jumping 50-6.75. Sturgis's jump was good enough for an NCAA provisional bid as well.

The Mountaineers will return to action February 29 as they head to Clemson, S.C. to defend their Southern Conference indoor title that they won in 2007.

 

Appalachian State (Women)

 

BLACKSBURG, VA.- Although not all Mountaineers took part in the meet, the Appalachian women's track and field squad posted strong performances at the Virginia Tech Challenge. No team scoring took place, but the meet proved to provide good competition for the Apps and helped to ready them for the Southern Conference Championships next weekend.

Senior Jen Povick grabbed an 11th place finish in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:15.60. Povick's performance keeps her at fifth on ASU's all-time list, but improves her personal record that was recorded in 2007.

In the long jump, Jessica Mayela finished 18th, jumping 17-5.50.

Rounding things out, sophomore Danielle Thorpe was impressive once again, as she jumped 41-3 in the triple jump. Her jump is a new personal best and moves her into sixth on Appalachian's all-time list.

The Mountaineers return to action February 29 as they head to Clemson, S.C. to defend their 2007 indoor title at the Southern Conference Indoor Championships.
