ELON, N.C. ? Elon captured all 18 of its individual women’s tennis matches Saturday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center, sweeping its way through its non-conference doubleheader with Barton and North Carolina A&T.
The Phoenix (5-3) tallied a 7-0 victory over Barton (1-2) in the morning before posting a 7-0 triumph over North Carolina A&T (2-8) in the afternoon. Elon’s only setbacks so far this season have been to nationally-ranked opponents.
In singles play versus the Bulldogs, Paige Kensrue (over Nadia Filmater 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1), Anna Milian (over Chelsea Hseih 6-1, 4-6 (10-6) at No. 2), Jennifer Tucci (over Meaghan Lynch 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3), Laura Graybill (over Kristia Cedeno 6-3, 6-1 at No. 4), Whitney Butcher (over Summer Chase 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5) and Jessica Margolis (over Kristen Packer 6-0, 6-2 at No. 6) all collected wins.
In doubles action between the Phoenix and the Bulldogs, the duos of Deanna Bailey and Milian (over Hseih and Filmater 8-1 at No. 1), Kensrue and Butcher (over Cedeno and Jessica Galasso 8-2 at No. 2) and Tucci and Hayley Wahl (over Lynch and Chase 8-1 at No. 3) were all victorious.
Against the Lady Aggies, Bailey (over Winnie Quick 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1), Kensrue (over Tina Ruffin 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2), Graybill (over Jaymee Jones 6-1, 6-3 at No. 3), Wahl (over Danielle McCaskill 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4), Butcher (over Destiny Williams 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5) and Margolis (over Revorn Ferguson 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6) all claimed success in singles.
In the doubles bouts between Elon and North Carolina A&T, Bailey and Milian defeated Quick and Jones 8-2 at No. 1, Wahl and Tucci dispatched Ruffin and McCaskill 8-1 at No. 2 and Graybill and Margolis shut out Williams and Ferguson 8-0 at No. 3.
Western Carolina 3, Presbyterian 4
CLINTON, S.C. ? Western Carolina women’s tennis opened the 2008 season with a hard-fought loss to Presbyterian College Saturday, falling 4-3 to the Blue Hose.
The Catamounts opened the match by winning two of three doubles matches to take the early 1-0 lead. Western Carolina got wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles to pick up the early point.
Tessie Salame defeated Presbyterian’s Brittany Lanford 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 1. Catamounts also picked up a win at No. 4 singles with Amanda Massey defeating the Blue Hose’s Virginia Waldron 5-7, 6-3, 6-0.
Presbyterian’s Megan Davis Defeated WCU’s Marianna Jane at No. 3 singles to secure the 4-3 win for the Blue Hose.
Western Carolina returns to action Sunday to face Charlotte. Match time is set for 10 a.m.
Davidson 0, Virginia Tech 7
BLACKSBURG, Va. < The No. 63 Virginia Tech women's tennis team had little trouble Saturday afternoon in defeating Davidson College, 7-0, at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
Davidson saw its four-match win streak come to an end as it fell to 5-2 on the season. It had won its previous four matches by the score of 7-0. Tech, ranked No. 63 in this week's Intercollegiate Tennis Association national poll, improved to 6-2 as it swept the three doubles matches for the first point of the day, then took all of the six singles contests for the victory.
In singles, play the Wildcats' Virginia Berry and Lora Dushanova forced three-set matches, but could not pull out the decisive third set. Berry dropped her first set, 6-7, but came back with a 6-4 decision in the second set to force the final set. From there, the Hokies Jessica Long captured the third set in a tie-breaker.
Dushanova, who entered her match against Natalie Kretzer a perfect 3-0, also played to a tie breaker in the third set after taking a 6-1 decision in the first set and then falling 6-0 in the second set. Kretzer though, out-lasted Dushanova in the tie breaker to earn the final singles win and point for Virginia Tech.
Also seeing her perfect singles mark come to an end was freshman Alison Rauh at the No. 5 spot. Like Dushanova, Rauh was 3-0 as well, but dropped a 6-3,
6-2 match to J.J. Larson.
The Hokies swept the doubles to open the dual match with Holly Johnson and Larson closing out the doubles point with a tight 8-6 win against Rauh and senior Kim Whelan.
Davidson stays in Blacksburg, Va. for its second match on Sunday, Feb. 17 at
11 a.m. against Radford.

The women’s match came down to the final singles match before the Lady Mocs squeezed out a 4-3 victory.
For the second straight Saturday, the Lady Mocs pulled out a 4-3 victory. They defeated Belmont, 4-3 last week.
After Chattanooga, now 4-2, claimed the doubles point for a 1-0 edge, the Lions tied the score with a win at No. 1 singles. Phillipa Reakes handed senior Lindsey Ballard her first loss of the season, 6-4, 6-1.
North Alabama (1-3) owned a 3-1 lead after picking up wins at the No. 3 and No. 2 singles spots in that order. Mallory Waites defeated senior Bonnie Adams at No. 3, 7-5, 6-0, and Yuliya Zelenskaya got past junior Beata Knizat at No. 2, 6-4, 7-6.
Chattanooga’s underclassmen withstood the pressure and pulled out the win for the team.
Sophomore Kate Ksiezopolski was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Kylie Realmuto at No. 6 singles, and freshman Arianna Sanjines tied the team score at 3-3 with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Arrie Moore at No. 5.
Number four singles was the last match decided, and freshman Annie Green broke the tie with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Louise Klasen.
“I can’t say enough about our young players,” head coach Jeff Clark said. “They helped us get through a very close match. We went through this experience last week, and we did not panic. North Alabama has a strong team, and we are pleased to come away with a win.”
The Lady Mocs return to the court at the Hixson Racquet Club tomorrow with a noon match against UAB. The men’s team hosts Murray State Feb. 22, also played indoors at Hixson.

HIGH POINT, N.C. ? The Wofford women’s tennis team battled for a 4-3 win as freshman Haley Baird held on to win clinching the match victory Friday afternoon as the Terriers visited the High Point Panthers in High Point, N.C.
Fighting to secure a win for their squads, as the last to be on the courts Baird battled Iris Schabetsberger at the No. 5 singles spot. Baird fought to claim a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win.
Also in singles action, senior Adriane Hodges defeated Kelly Tolman at the No. 2 position 6-0, 6-3.
At the No. 3 slot, sophomore Sabrina Smyers beat Becky Carr 6-3, 6-3,
Freshman Sonia Anand finished the match with a victory at the No. 6 position defeating Lea Catanzano 6-3, 6-4.
High Point claimed the doubles point by two matches to one. Senior Laura Lynn Williams and junior Merry Ellen Henry teamed up for the only doubles victory for Wofford beating the Panthers’ Schabetsberger and Jody Wicks 8-4.
The Terries will return to the Reeves Tennis Center to play host to Emory Sunday in a 12 p.m. match. Sunday’s matchup will open a schedule of six consecutive home matches for the women.

UNC Greensboro 0, Virginia Tech 7
BLACKSBURG, VA ? Virginia Tech, the No. 63 ranked team in the nation, won four of six singles matches in straight sets and pulled the other two out in third-set tiebreakers as the Hokies beat UNC Greensboro, 7-0, in women’s tennis action Saturday afternoon.
UNCG threatened to break the shutout at Nos. 1 and 6 singles. However, Yasmin Hamza held off Alejandra Guerra, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7) at the first flight and Bethan James topped Courtney Akel at No. 6, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (14-12) to preserve the shutout.
UNCG’s only win of the afternoon came at No. 1 doubles when Guerra and Arielle VonStrolley teamed up to beat Hamza and Jessica Brouwer, 8-5. But the Hokies claimed the doubles point by winning the other two doubles matches.
UNCG returns to action on Thursday when it hosts High Point at 2 pm.
