Appalachian State Signs Six for 2008
BOONE, N.C. ? Appalachian State interim head coach Liam Farrell is proud to announce the signing of six student-athletes to National Letters of Intent for the 2008 season. Three student-athletes join the Mountaineers from North Carolina while Florida, Virginia and Georgia are also represented in the class.
“This is an excellent group of student-athletes, each bringing a tremendous amount of talent, leadership and toughness to our program,” said Farrell. “All of these guys have the ability to step in right away and make an impact. I am very proud of their unwavering commitment to Appalachian, and in turn, family, friends and fans of ASU soccer will be proud of what they accomplish on the field and in the classroom.”
Tanner Chamblin - (MF/D - 5’9” - 167 lbs. - Northview H.S. (Duluth, Ga.))
Tanner earned four varsity letters in his time at Northview High School. He was named captain in his senior season after earning the coaches award in 2007 as a junior. Plays club soccer for Atlanta Fire United U-18 Elite Boys team. Reached Georgia State Cup finals in 2006 and 2007 and finished runner-up at Region III Super-Y tournament in 2006. In 2007 and 2008, Tanner trained at the USSF Development Academy.
Caleb Conrad - (GK - 6’2” - 210 lbs. - Swansboro H.S. (Swansboro, N.C.))
Caleb was a four-year letterman for Swansboro High School. He captured honorable mention all-conference honors as a freshman, all-conference and second-team all-area honors as a sophomore and a junior. As a senior, he earned all-conference and all-area honors. Last season, Caleb became the second player in Swansboro H.S. history to allow less than 10 goals in a season. Caleb also plays for OCSA Coastal Crew 89’s.
Sean Dreybus - (MF - 6’0” - 165 lbs. - Warwick, H.S. (Newport News, Va.))
Sean is a left-footed midfield product of Warwick High School. He secured first-team all-peninsula district honors in 2007 and second-team honors in 2006. He won the 2006 AAU U-16 National Indoor Soccer Championship. The midfielder has also played for the Virginia Legacy PDL (Professional Developmental League) and Virginia Legacy PASL (Premier Arena Soccer League) teams, reaching the state-semifinal round in 2007 and 2007.
Ryan Duffy - (MF - 5’11” - 175 lbs. - Apex H.S. (Apex, N.C.))
Ryan joins Appalachian after a four-year varsity career at Apex High School. In 2007, Ryan earned Tri-8 player of the year as well as all-state and team MVP honors. In 2005, his team won the N.C. 4-A state title. Duffy played club soccer at the CASL U-18 Academy. He was state champion with the CASL team in 2006 and 2007.
Cabe Nolan - (MF - 5’10” - 145 lbs. - Fletcher H.S. (Neptune Beach, Fla.))
Cabe is a four-year letterman and co-captain at Fletcher High School in Neptune Beach, Fla. This season, Cabe lead the senators to a 20-2-3 record, including capturing district and conference titles. Last season, Cabe scored 18 goals and 12 assists. He is a three-time all-conference and all-district honoree. In 2008, he received his team’s Most Valuable Midfielder award. Cabe is also a four-year member of the Florida ODP team.
Collin Taylor - (GK - 6’2” - 185 lbs. - Freedom H.S. (Morgantown, N.C.))
Collin is a four-year letterwinner at Freedom High School in Morgantown, N.C. In his high school career, he started all 89 matches, and allowed only 83 goals (0.93 GAA). He set a school record for saves with 494 and set a school and N.C. 4-A classification record with 41 career shutouts. Taylor was a four-time all-conference and all-state honoree as well as 2007 Northwestern 4-A player of the year and NCSCA all-state. Colin is a star in the classroom as well, earning NSCAA/Adidas High School Scholar All-American honors in 2007.
Furman Men's Soccer Inks Seven To National Letters Of Intent
Greenville, S.C. -- Two all-americans, four region team players and a member of the United States Under-17 World Cup squad highlight Furman's seven-member men's soccer signing class announced on Thursday by head coach Doug Allison.
The seven-man class includes Eric Cobleigh (Acworth, Ga.), Warren Creavalle (Acworth, Ga.), Coleton Henning (Shawnee, Kan.), Walker Jernigan (Decatur, Ga.), Alec Kann (Decatur, Ga.), Chris Klute (Grand Prairie, Texas) and Amadu Ndiaye (Doraville, Ga.).
"We are very excited about the seven new student-athletes in our 2007 class," said Allison. "We feel we have addressed our needs, and we are hoping for good things on the field and in the classroom from the incoming class, many of whom could have an impact immediately. Coach (Derek) Marinatos has done an excellent job of indentifying student-athletes who are the correct fit for Furman University and I know they are all eager to join our family."
Henning is a two-time NSCAA/adidas High School All-American and two-time Gatorade Kansas State Player-of-the-Year honoree while Klute, a member of the 2007 U.S. U-17 World Cup squad, was recently named NSCAA/adidas Youth All-America.
Furman is coming off one of its most successful seasons in school history. The Paladins posted a 19-4-0 record and top 25 national ranking. Allison's squad claimed the Southern Conference regular season and tournament crowns before advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. In January, all-americans Jon Leathers and Shea Salinas were both selected in the second round of the MLS SuperDraft.

Georgia Southern Inks Mertes for 2008
STATESBORO, Ga. - Georgia Southern head men’s soccer coach Kevin Kennedy announced the signing of Ryan Mertes of Mooresville, N.C. to the 2008 Eagle soccer squad.
Mertes played midfield for his father, coach Jon Mertes, at Lake Norman High School, where he led the team to two, 3A State Championships (2006, 2007), posting an unprecedented 57-0 record. Mertes was tabbed an All-Region and All-State selection in 2006 and 2007, respectively, serving as team captain.
On the club front, he played for Ben Parry's Charlotte '90 Blue team, helping his team to multiple semi-finalist appearances at the State Cup. He was also instrumental in his team's finalist finish at the USL National Cup in 2007. Mertes has been a member of the North Carolina '90 State Team, as well as an attendee at the USL ODP National Training Camp from 2006-2008. Mertes competed for the Charlotte Soccer Club.
"I'm very excited about Ryan joining our squad,” said Kennedy, the 2006 Southern Conference Coach of the Year. “He is a very technical player who has a good understanding of the game. His work rate is tremendous, and I'm confident that he has the ability to compete for time right away. He's a proven winner, and I've been impressed with his character and mentality in both club and high school competitions."

Elon Men's Soccer Welcomes Four New Players

ELON, N.C. ? Elon University head men’s soccer coach Darren Powell today announced that three players have signed National Letters of Intent to play for the Phoenix beginning with the 2008 campaign. Joining the program will be: James Carroll (Charlotte, N.C./Myers Park HS/Charlotte United FC ?89 Gold), Archie Karpeh (Circle Pines, Minn./Pendleton School/IMG), Austen King (Wilson, N.C./Ralph L. Fike HS/?89 CASL Elite). Jahan Threeths (Roswell, Ga./Roswell HS/Concorde Fire) will also join the program and has already enrolled at Elon and will participate with the Phoenix in the spring.
“We are pleased to announce the four additions to our squad for 2008,” stated Powell. “These four players bring specific attributes to our team both with their abilities and attitude. We expect all four to play a major role in our program over the next four years. With this group of student-athletes we feel we will compete for a Southern Conference championship and will look to keep improving on our out-of-conference results. These student-athletes will also engage well in the academic community here at Elon. We look forward to having these players to join us at pre-season camp in August.”

Carroll, a 5-9, 165-pound midfielder/defender, helped Michael Magno’s Charlotte United FC ?89 Gold club team capture the 2004 State Cup. He has been a member of the North Carolina ?90 ODP squad for three seasons (2005-07) and was among the region pool in 2007. President of his National Honor Society chapter, Carroll captained his club squad for seven seasons.
Archie Karpeh

Karpeh, a 5-9, 150-pound forward, has been a member of the United States U-17 National Team and a two-time adidas All-American (2007, 2008). He was also awarded the 2007 adidas MVP award. A four-year captain for Tom Durkin’s IMG squad, Karpeh claimed team MVP accolades from 2004-2007. The program also advanced the Florida Cup Final Four.

King, a 6-2, 181-pound defender, was a member of the 2007 NCSCA Men’s All-State Team and earned a spot on the 2008 NCSCA “Clash of the Carolinas” All-Star team. He was honored as the 2007 New Six Conference Player of the Year and helped lead Ralph L. Fike to a conference crowns in 2004, 2005 and 2006 and a state finals appearance in 2007. King helped his club program, coached by Jay Howll and Bruce Murray, reach the USYSA Southern Regional finals in 2007. That team also captured the 2007 NCYSA state title. He has captained both his prep and club teams.

Club: Concorde Fire
Threeths, a 5-11, 150-pound defender, was a member of the Georgia ODP team from 2003-2006 and also earned a spot on the Super Y Regional squad. He earned Roswell’s Rookie of the Year award in 2005 and was named team MVP in 2007. Threeths helped lead Gregg Blasingame’s highly successful Concorde Fire program to the 2006 USYSA national finals. That same season, the team captured the USYSA Region III title as well as the Disney Showcase crown. Threeths was a member of three teams that claimed Georgia state titles ? 2004, 2006 and 2007 ? and another which reached the finals ? 2005. In 2007, the Fire was a USYSA Region III semi-finalist and won the Red Bull National League Eastern Division.
