SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Guards Ashley Pellom of Western Carolina and Tierra Bumbrey of Elon have been named the Southern Conference women’s basketball co-players of the week for February 12.
Pellom and Bumbrey faced off in a four-overtime thriller Monday night at Elon with Western Carolina eventually prevailing 102-101. In that contest, Pellom led the Lady Catamounts with 19 points, including a pair of free throws that gave WCU the lead for good with less than two minutes remaining in the final overtime period. The senior from Wilmington, N.C., also scored 13 points in leading Western Carolina, winners of five straight, to a 63-55 win at UNC Greensboro on Saturday.
Against the Lady Catamounts, Bumbrey filled up the stat sheet with 36 points on 8-of-14 shooting from behind the three-point arc to go along with six assists, five rebounds and three steals. Her eight three pointers were the most by any SoCon player in eight seasons, and the Stafford, Va., native also showed a flair for the dramatic by hitting the game-tying three-pointer with two seconds remaining in regulation. Bumbrey led all players with 57 minutes played in a game that equaled the longest in Southern Conference history.
The weekly honor is the second of the season for Pellom, who was recognized as well on December 11. This is Bumbrey’s first player of the week award and the first for an Elon player in the past two seasons.
Other top performances this week were turned in by Appalachian State’s Whitney Tossie, College of Charleston’s Sarah Moye, Chattanooga’s Alex Anderson, Davidson’s Danielle Hemerka, Furman’s Sarah Baker, Georgia Southern’s Shawnda Atwood, UNC Greensboro’s Monique Floyd and Wofford’s Natalie Gramblin.
