Appalachian State (men)
BOONE, N.C. - Michael Wilson took home first place in the pole vault and a large group of Mountaineers had strong outings on Friday, as the Appalachian State men's indoor track and field teams hosted their lone meet of the spring on Friday.
Daniel Neal set the tone with a second-place finish at 7.65 in the 55-meter hurdles, the day's first event.
In the 55-meter dash, Ricky Harris placed fourth at 6.54. Harris placed fifth in the high jump, with a best mark of 6 feet 2 inches. Matt Boruff also cleared 6-2, while Michael Wilson 5-10.
Unattached runner Jordon Vaden set a new Holmes Center record in the 300-meter dash with a time of 34.30. ASU's Carlos Carter placed fourth with a time of 35.90. His time was a personal best and was the fifth-fastest time in Appalachian indoor history. Daniel Neal placed seventh and ranked tenth all-time for ASU with a run of 36.75.
In the weight throw, Wes Kiser threw for 60 feet 1.25 inches and a second place finish, behind only unattached thrower Bob Smith. Grant Haun placed fourth at 53-4.5. Kiser threw for a distance of 49-8.5 in the shot put to place third.
Sean Thompson, the lone Mountaineer in the event, placed fifth in the 500-meter run, at 1:09.19.
Andrew Yarchin set an Appalachian Holmes Center record and took home first place in the 800-meter run, with a time of 1:55.87. Nick O'Keefe placed second in the event with a 1:58.09 mark.
Michael Wilson posted a best mark of 15 feet 7 inches to win the pole vaule. His mark moved him into sixth place in the ASU record book. Zach Smith was second at 15-1 while Barron Shell rounded out the top four, at 14-7.25.
The Mountaineers return to action next weekend at the Clemson Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
Middle Tennessee Invitational

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. ? Chattanooga claimed four top finishes Saturday at the Middle Tennessee Valentine Invitational at the Murphy Center.
In the men’s races, senior Michael Mentz and sophomore David Moore raced to top finishes Saturday. Mentz finished the race in a time of 4:17.69 beating out Morehead State’s top runner by nearly a full second. Blake Ketron was fifth at 4:23.63.
Moore, running in his first indoor season of competition, took first in the 3,000 meter in a time of 8:38.35 while Kevin Huwe finished in a time of 9:06.20. Mentz placed fifth in the men’s 800 meter run at 1:57.76 and Matt Baltimore ran the race at 1:58.40.
Chattanooga will next compete in the Southern Conference championships Feb. 29 through March 1 at the Clemson University Indoor facility.
