WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- The Appalachian men's tennis squad continued with its win streak as the Mountaineers downed Winston-Salem State on Sunday afternoon, winning 7-0. Appalachian now improves to 2-1 on the season, while the Rams fall to 0-3.

Playing at the No.1 spot for the first time this season, senior Ryan Brookshaw had an impressive performance as he defeated his opponent in two sets, winning 6-1 and 6-1. Lee Floyd also competed at a new position as he was victorious at the No. 2 spot, also beating his opponent in two sets.

Two freshman made their debut for the Apps, as Russ Ferrari and Taylor Bianco were successful at the No. 4 and No. 6 positions, both winning easily in two sets.

In doubles play, the team of Trent Constance and Peter Jacobs was solid at the No.1 spot, as they beat Brian Coxton and Ian Hunter 8-2. Sophomore David Doverspike and Bobby Lake also had an impressive showing as they won 8-1. Closing out the match, Taylor Bianco and Gareth Thomas handily defeated their opponent, winning 8-0.

The Apps have a nine-day break before returning to action on February 20 to face USC-Upstate at 2 p.m.

 

Davidson 5, Gardner-Webb 2

 

DAVIDSON, N.C. ? In its second match in as many days, the Davidson men's tennis team rebounded from a loss to South Carolina a day earlier to take a 5-2 win over visiting Gardner-Webb on Sunday afternoon in the Knobloch Tennis Center.

Davidson ran its overall record to 3-2 and improved to a perfect 3-0 at home. GWU remained winless at 0-4 to start the 2008 campaign.

The Wildcats regrouped after a tough 6-1 setback to No. 58 South Carolina on Saturday by starting the match on Sunday with a clean sweep in doubles play to take a 1-0 lead in team points. It marked the first time this year Davidson earned wins in all three doubles matches.

Junior Scott Myers (West Palm Beach, Fla.) then led the Wildcats in singles play by taking four of the six matches to take home the victory. Myers continued his winning ways in the early going of his junior year by running his singles win streak to four straight with a 6-0, 6-2 win at the No. 6 spot.

Davidson and the Bulldogs split two three-setters with freshman Walker Lyon (Wallingford, Pa.) picking up the three-set win for the 'Cats. His match saw him twice to go a tie-breaker as he defeated Grant Van Rensburg, 7-6, 6-7, 6-4. The win improved the freshman's first year singles record to 3-2.

Also getting back on the winning track was the sophomore duo of Sam Burns (Banner Elk, N.C.) and Eric Noble (Fayetteville, N.C.). With a two-set win over Rafael Atmayer, Burns earned his second singles win of the season. Noble and Lyons both formed the No. 3 doubles team and earned an 8-2 win.

Noble scored his first singles win of the season by earning a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Carlos Quljano at No. 3 singles. He also teamed with senior Phillip Compeau (Wilkesboro, N.C.) to capture one of the three Wildcat doubles wins.
 
Despite falling in both of their singles matches, the duo of senior Flaviu Simihaian (Nasaud, Romania) and junior Ethan Jaffee (Indianapolis, Ind.) did earn a win together at the No. 1 doubles spot, taking home an 8-4 victory over Evgeny Slesarev and Andrew Veeder.

Davidson is next in action when it plays host to Presbyterian on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 1:30 p.m.

ANNAPOLIS, MD ? UNC Greensboro dropped a pair of men’s tennis matches over the weekend in the Capitol Region, falling to No. 75 George Washington and Navy by identical 7-0 scores.

 

Late Saturday night, the Spartans had opportunities to top the 75th-ranked Colonials. Four of the six singles matches went three sets, giving the Spartans the chance to knock off George Washington.

 

Andrey Bubnov won the opening set in both of his matches over the weekend. Saturday night, he won the first set, 6-4, against Mustafa Gencsoy before dropping the next two by scored of 6-0 and 6-2. On Sunday, He topped Navy’s Nate Nelms in the opening set, 7-5, but dropped the second set 6-4 and a third-set 10-point tiebreaker, 10-5.

 

UNCG returns to action next Saturday when it hosts Gardner-Webb. The start time is set for 2 pm.
