Chattanooga 5, Tennessee-Martin 2

 

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga men’s tennis team claimed the top four singles matches Saturday en route to a 5-2 victory over Tennessee-Martin.

 

The win was the fourth straight for the Mocs who improve to 5-1 on the season.

 

Chattanooga began the dual match, played indoors at the Hixson Racquet Club, winning two of three doubles matches for the early 1-0 lead.

 

Playing on three courts, the Mocs worked the score to 4-0 with victories in the first three singles matches.

 

Senior Badr Bouabdellah rebounded with two quick sets after falling in the first to defeat Andrey Yesipov, 6-7, 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 1 position.  Senior Razvan Axente was a 6-2, 6-1 winner over Stephen Bruwer at No. 2, and junior Peter Sauska remained undefeated in six matches with a 6-3, 6-3 win over Christian Slabbert.

 

Junior Pavel Vostrikov added the fifth team point.  He used three sets at No. 4 singles to get past Alfredo Krywacz, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4.

 

The Skyhawks, 2-2, picked up two points with wins at No. 5 and No. 6.  Chattanooga freshman Rick van de Bovenkamp was up a set and down 2-1 in the second to Stewart McRae when he had to retire because of an injury.  Petr Markov defeated freshman Robert Diamond, 3-6, 6-2, 10-4 at No. 6.

 

The Mocs host North Alabama next Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Hixson Racquet Club.

Davidson 1, South Carolina 6

 

COLUMBIA, S.C. ­ The No. 58 University of South Carolina men's tennis team completed a doubleheader sweep with a 6-1 win over visiting Davidson on Saturday afternoon at the USC Indoor Fieldhouse.

 

Davidson, coming off a 6-1 win over Longwood to start the month of February, fell to an even 2-2 on the year. The Gamecocks continued their winning ways with a sixth straight victory to open the season at 6-0. Earlier in the day, USC defeated Charlotte 6-1 as well.

 

The Wildcats battled through in doubles play, but dropped all three matches in falling behind 1-0 in team points.

 

Junior Scott Myers (West Palm Beach, Fla.) was then the lone Wildcat to score a singles win as the Gamecocks took five of the six matches, all in straight sets, for the 6-1 win. Davidson entered play an even 9-9 as a team in singles play.

 

Myers saw his record move to 2-0 at No. 6 singles, 3-1 overall in singles, when he defeated Chris Sheehan to close out the match and give Davidson its one team point.

 

Davidson will turn right around and play a home match tomorrow when visiting Gardner-Webb comes to Knobloch Tennis Center for a 3 p.m. match. The 'Cats took a 5-2 home victory against the Bulldogs last season.

Appalachian State 7, Liberty 0

 

LYNCHBURG,Va.- The Appalachian State men's tennis team picked up its first win of the 2008 season on the road, as the Mountaineers downed Liberty 7-0. With the win, Appalachian now improves to 1-1 on the season, while Liberty drops to 1-2.

In singles play, Bobby Lake was victorious at the No. 1 spot, beating his opponent in two sets, winning 7-6 and 6-1. Teammate Ryan Brookshaw also was strong in competition at the No. 2 position, as picked up a win for the Apps, defeating his opponent 6-3, 6-3.

At the No. 3 thru 6 spots, Trent Constance, Lee Floyd, Peter Jacobsand David Doverspike all won as well to help the Mountaineers to a victory.

In doubles action,the duo of Brookshaw/Floyd played at the No. 1 spot and won 8-4, while
Jacobs/Constance won 8-7 at the No. 2 position. Rounding out the match, partners Doverspike/Lake were also victorious, handily winning 8-2.

ASU continues with its two-game road stint as the Mountaineers travel to Winston-Salem, N.C. to take on Winston-Salem State, Sunday February 10 at Noon.

 

Elon 3, Old Dominion 4

 

NORFOLK, Va. ? No. 43 Old Dominion pulled out three three-set matches to slip past No. 54 Elon for a 4-3 non-league triumph in a battle of nationally-ranked men’s tennis teams Friday afternoon at the Ted Constant Center.

The Monarchs (9-3) squeaked out a pair of doubles matches before earning a split with the Phoenix (1-2) in the singles bouts. Eidy Igarashi and Aleksandr Seleznev edged out Damon Gooch and Mason Schermerhorn 8-5 at No. 1 lost No. 1 while Tobias Fanselow and Rodrigo Souza overcame Oscar Podlewski and Philip Nemec 9-8 (7-5) at No. 2 to secure the doubles point for ODU.

Elon picked up a doubles win at No. 3 when Alberto Rojas and Chase Helpingstine dispatched Alex Funkhouser and Dan Couzens Albero by an 8-2 margin.

Seleznev out-dueled No. 72 Gooch 7-5, 1-6, 7-5 at No. 1 singles, Fanselow out-lasted Schermerhorn 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 6-0 at No. 3 and Souza rallied past Rojas 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 to clinch the victory for the Monarchs.

“This match was highly competitive,” Elon coach Michael Leonard said. “Mason and Damon were both serving for their respective matches. We have to give Old Dominion all of the credit for coming away with the big points. It was a learning experience for our guys.”

The Phoenix posted three wins as Podlewski came back to beat Igarashi 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 at No. 2, Nemec ousted Matt Fawcett 6-4, 6-1 at No. 5 and Helpingstine overcame Couzens 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 at No. 6.

Riding a 23-match winning streak at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center, Elon opens its home slate with a four-game homestand against Campbell (2 p.m. Wednesday), Winston-Salem State (9 a.m. Saturday), Charlotte (1 p.m. Saturday) and Gardner-Webb (1 p.m. Sunday).

Georgia Southern 5, Jacksonville 2

 

STATESBORO, Ga. ? Tough singles play and a strong doubles outing helped the Georgia Southern men’s tennis team earn a hard fought win on Friday afternoon, as the Eagles defeated Jacksonville University at the Hanner Tennis Complex.

 

The Eagles defeated the dolphins 5-2 earning their second win of the season. It was the second time this season that the Eagles have avenged a 2007 loss. Earlier this season GSU defeated North Florida 5-2.

 

Georgia Southern (2-3, 0-0 SoCon) took an early advantage earning the doubles point taking two of the three doubles matches. Senior Emmanuel Nkoueleue (Douala, Cameroon) and Borja Malet (Barcelona, Spain) defeated Jacksonville’s tandem of Jordi Ballester and Francisco Riveroll by a score of 8-5. Joris De Weerdt (Mortsel, Belgium) and Gregory Bekkers (Antwerp, Belgium) teamed up and sealed the doubles point, downing Vinicius Craveiro and Marcos Oliveira 8-4.

 

“Overall I was happy with the way we played today,” said GSU head coach Justin Miles. “We need to get things going a little quicker. We started out slow in doubles, but we continued to compete and eventually picked up the pace.”

 

In singles action, the Eagles took four of six matches from Jacksonville. Nkoueleue earned his second victory of the match defeating Ballester 7-5, 6-0 from the No. 1 singles position. Bekkers and Malet both earned victories using three sets and long extended rallies. Bekkers defeated Victor Vaz 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-2 at the No. 2 slot, while Malet took down Riveroll 7-5, 3-6, 6-3 at No. 3 singles. De Weerdt added a victory for GSU at the No. 5 position upending Craveiro 6-0, 6-1.

 

The Eagles return to the hard-court (Feb. 17) when they play host to Mercer. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
