LEXINGTON, Va. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team recorded its second straight 40-point victory over a Southern Conference team Friday night, defeating VMI 41-3.
The Mocs, who improved to 9-5 overall and 4-0 in the SoCon, registered a 40-6 win over Davidson this past Sunday.
Chattanooga led from the get-go and used two pins, a technical fall and three major decisions to pile up the points against the Keydets.
Senior Javier Maldonado remained perfect in 19 SoCon matchups by pinning VMI’s Jeremy Adams in the first period of the opening match at 125 pounds.
VMI recorded its only team points of the night in the next match. Tyler Anthony handed UTC senior Steve Hromada a 4-1 decision at 133 and a 6-3 score.
Cody Cleveland got the 19th-ranked Mocs back on track in the 141-pound class. The sophomore earned a 10-2 major decision over David Metzler for his 21st win of the season. Sophomore Joey Knox, ranked 17th nationally, blanked John Held at 149, 7-0 to increase the margin to 13-3.
After a VMI forfeit at 157 which handed a win to senior Seth Garvin, junior Nick Davis posted a 23-8 major on Jon Horne at 165 pounds. Fourteenth-ranked Lloyd Rogers, a senior, was one point better in the ensuing match, picking up a 24-8 technical fall against Dustin McCabe.
Chattanooga’s lead reached 32-3 after the 184-pound meeting as senior Josh Edmondson shut out Curtis Moore by major decision, 10-0. Senior Matt Koz, ranked 18th, notched his team-high sixth pin of the season late in the first period against 197-pounder Ronnie Ellsworth, extending the Mocs’ lead to 38-3.
Heavyweight Matt Lettner, a freshman, came up with a takedown of Leon Barrow with 30 seconds left in their match to pull out a 3-2 win and round out the team scoring.
Chattanooga heads south from Lexington Saturday to take on Virginia Tech at 7 p.m. in Blacksburg, Va.

BLACKSBURG, Va. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team has won five consecutive dual matches for the second time this season, winning its fifth straight Saturday with a 26-10 victory at Virginia Tech.
The 19th-ranked Mocs, who improved to 10-5 on the season, won their first five duals this year before five straight setbacks. Saturday, Chattanooga used the heavier portion of its lineup to pull away from the Hokies (6-7).
Leading 16-7 after six matches, the senior trio of Lloyd Rogers, Josh Edmondson and Matt Koz strung three wins together to push the margin to an insurmountable 26-7 lead.
The Mocs won at all but three positions. Senior Javier Maldonado, ranked 15th nationally at 125 pounds, worked a pin 42 seconds into the second period to defeat Justin Staylor and hand Chattanooga a 6-0 lead.
Virginia Tech’s Jared Jones doubled up senior Steve Hromada, 8-4 at 133 pounds to slice the score in half, 6-3.
The Mocs began to distance themselves after 13th-ranked Cody Cleveland dispatched Chris Diaz, 8-3 at 141, and No. 17 Joey Knox shut out Matt Rosen at 149, 6-0.
Senior Seth Garvin extended the margin to 16-3 with a 10-1 major decision over Hokies’ 157-pounder, Andre Johnson.
Rogers, ranked 14th, defeated Eric Decker, 5-1 at 174, Edmondson edged Tommy Spellman, 5-4 at 184, and 18th-ranked Koz scored a 12-3 major over D.J. Bruce.
The Hokies picked up their additional team points with victories at 165 and 295. Matt Epperly registered a 14-4 major decision over junior Nick Davis at 165 pounds, and heavyweight David Marone defeated freshman Matt Lettner, 4-2.
The win was the second in two days for the Mocs as they defeated Southern Conference foe VMI Friday, 41-3.
Chattanooga returns home for its final two duals of the season. The Mocs host Central Michigan Feb. 17 at 1 p.m. and UNC Greensboro Feb. 23 at 1 p.m. Both matches will take place in Maclellan Gym on the UTC campus.
Chattanooga will also host the Southern Conference Championships, March 8 in the McKenzie Arena at UTC.

Appalachian State 31, The Citadel 8
CHARLESTON, S.C. ? The Appalachian State wrestling team extended their winning streak to three-straight by winning seven bouts in the match to defeat The Citadel, 31-8, in Southern Conference wrestling action Saturday afternoon in McAlister Field House. With the loss, The Citadel falls to 4-7 (1-3 SoCon) in duals, while Appalachian goes to 10-7 (3-1 SoCon), moving into a second place tie with UNC Greensboro.
The match opened up at 197-pounds with The Citadel’s John Buck going ahead 3-2 with a takedown with 32 seconds left in the match. ASU freshman Dylan Temple escaped with 12 seconds left to tie the bout and send it to overtime. In the overtime, Temple tried to elude Buck’s takedown attempt and in the process caught Buck by surprise and scored a pin with only one-second remaining in the extra period. After the loss, Buck was charged with an unsportsmanlike penalty giving The Citadel -1 points to Appalachian’s 6.
At 285, Appalachian junior Jared Campbell defeated Aaron Brown 2-1 even though Brown scored the only active points of the match on an escape after starting the second period on the bottom. Campbell’s points both came off of stalling penalties on Brown in the first and second periods.
In the 125-pound match, Appalachian sophomore Frank Celorrio used two takedowns, a caution penalty, an escape and the riding bonus to defeat The Citadel’s Tyler Sim, 7-1.
Appalachian’s 133-pounder, senior Terreyl Williams, used six takedowns and riding time including one takedown with less than a second left in the match to secure a 13-4 major decision over The Citadel’s Anthony Easter.
The Bulldogs got on the positive side of the scoreboard at 141 pounds when Michael Arias used three takedowns, a reversal and an escape to defeat ASU sophomore Mark Maya, 9-5. Arias’ final takedown came with two seconds left in the third period. The Bulldog win made the score 16-2, Appalachian.
In the 149-pound match, App. State senior Scott Ervin took down Derek Royster 24 seconds in and added three near-fall points with 25 seconds left in the first period. Ervin chose the top position to start the second period, securing the pin 62 seconds into the period. Ervin, ranked No. 12 in the nation improves his record to 29-5 on the season with his fourth pin in his last six matches and sixth pin this season.
Appalachian’s 157-pound senior Eddie Hutchinson secured a takedown 40 seconds into the bout and pinned The Citadel’s Keith Koziel 45 seconds later at 1:25. The pin sealed the victory for the Mountaineers and made the team score 28-2.
At 165-pounds, Bulldog Brendan Prince used a takedown, a stalling point and riding time to defeat ASU senior Tommy Hutchinson, 4-1.
The Citadel’s Derek Sickel won the Bulldogs’ third match of the day with a 5-3 sudden victory over Appalachian’s senior Neal Martin at 174 pounds. Martin scored a takedown in the first period to go up 2-0. In the second period Sickel elected to start on the bottom and got an escape point 20 seconds in. Sickel then went ahead 3-2 when he scored a takedown of his own with 47 seconds left in the second. Martin took the bottom to start the third and tied the bout at 3-3 when he escaped with 23 seconds remaining in regulation. Sickel took Martin down with 42 seconds left in overtime to secure the 5-3 sudden victory.
In the match’s final bout, Appalachian freshman Austin Trotman used two takedowns, an escape and riding time to defeat The Citadel’s Darius Caldwell, 6-0 at 184 pounds.
The Mountaineers return this Wednesday to open their final home stand of the season. The Apps face Liberty on Feb. 13 at 7 p.m. then VMI and Carson-Newman on Senior Day, Sunday Feb. 17, starting at 1 p.m.
