Wofford 4, Gardner-Webb 3

 

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. ? Tennis assistant coach Katie Hangstefer mentor’s the women in her first Division I collegiate match as the Terriers captured a 4-3 win in its first match of the 2008 regular season Wednesday against Gardner-Webb in Boling Springs, N.C.

 

“It is very exciting to start the season out with a win. All the ladies played hard. It was good to see the fruit of our hard work come through,” said Hangstefer.

 

In singles action, junior Merry Ellen Henry, a 2007 second team All-Southern Conference honoree, clinched a win at the No. 1 position defeating the Runnin’ Bulldogs’ Laura Kriett 6-0, 7-5.

 

Teammate sophomore Sabrina Smyers secured the victory for the Terriers as she notched a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over Gardner-Webb’s Rita Gouveia at the No. 3 slot.

 

At the No. 4 position, junior Cayley Wetzig defeated Runnin’ Bulldogs’ Monica Walser 6-2, 6-2, while at the No. 6 slot sophomore McKenzie Carson also walked away victorious after battling Gardner-Webb’s Kasey Ellis 7-5, 7-5.

 

Although the Runnin’ Bulldogs claimed the doubles point, Smyers and freshman Haley Baird, in her first collegiate appearance, walked away with a win at the No. 3 spot beating Gardner-Webb duo Amy Beavers and Jenny Gomez 8-6.

 

The Terriers return for the season’s home opener at the Reeves Tennis Center at Wofford Saturday for an 11 a.m. match against North Carolina A&T.

College of Charleston 0, South Carolina 7

 

Columbia, S.C. -- The College of Charleston women’s tennis team dropped to 2-1 Wednesday evening after falling to # 29 South Carolina 7-0 at the USC Indoor Fieldhouse.  The Gamecocks improved to 2-0.

 

USC swept all three doubles positions, first winning at the second slot by an 8-2 score thanks to Miljiana Jocic and Natasa Vuckovic.  Gira Scholfield and Ana Marija Zubori, the national’s No. 9-ranked duo, beat Laura Borza and Link Leskosky 8-3 to clinch the doubles point.  Soon afterward, Kinsey Casey and Anna Lee Evans fell to Megan McGavock and Suzanna Mansour 8-4.

 

The Gamecocks jumped out to 4-1 leads at one, three and four singles. Zubori closed out her first set 6-1 against Leskosky at the top position and then won 6-4 in the second. Mansour won 6-3 over Evans at No. 4 singles and then closed out the match 6-1. Jelena Rajic gave the Gamecocks their second win of the season after beating Holly Dowse 6-1, 1-6, 6-1.

 

Vuckovic pushed the score to 5-0 after coming back from a 6-3 loss to Borza.  After losing the first 6-3 to Borza, Vuckovic rebounded with a 6-2 win in the second. She went ahead on Borza 3-1 in the third, but Borza managed to tie the score at 3-all. Vuckovic, though, responded by winning three games in a row to move to 12-4 on the season.

Casey fell to Jocic 6-1, 6-0, while Becker was defeat4d by McGavock 6-1, 6-3.

The Cougars travel to Rock Hill, S.C., Sat., Feb. 2, to face Winthrop at  1:00 p.m.

 

Georgia Southern 3, Jacksonville 4

 

STATESBORO, Ga. ? The Georgia Southern women’s tennis team opened dual action play on Wednesday afternoon, falling 4-3 to nationally ranked Jacksonville University.

No. 70 Jacksonville (2-0) won the doubles point by sweeping all three matches to take the early advantage. The tandem of Kristi Kegerreis (Fairfax, Va.) and Christine Caforio (Acworth, Ga.) fell 8-5 to Tatiana Soldatova and Iva Jaresova at the No. 1 doubles position.

 

Georgia Southern (0-1) claimed three victories in singles action at the one, two and four seeds respectively. Kegerreis defeated Lena Willi 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 1 slot, as the Eagles kept the match alive. Molly Maddox (Rome, Ga.) dropped Jaresova in straight sets 6-3, 6-4 at the No. 4 position.

 

Freshman Melanie Rolle opened the season on a high-note at the No. 2 seed downing Soldatova. The Gainesville, Fla. native used three sets to defeat Soldatova. After dropping the first set 4-6, Rolle reeled off two consecutive set victories earning the triumphant win (4-6, 6-3, 6-2). It was the first victory of her collegiate career.

 

“I’m really proud of the way we fought,” said GSU women’s tennis coach Amy Bonner. “We didn’t quit after losing the doubles point and continued to improve as the match progressed. It’s early in the season, but today was a good test to see where we’re at against a strong opponent.”

 

The Eagles travel to Atlanta, Ga. this weekend to take on Samford and Georgia State. Saturday’s match will be held at Lost Mountain Tennis Center in Powder Springs, Ga. The match is slated to begin at 11 a.m.

DAVIDSON, N.C.-For the second straight match the Davidson women's tennis team scored a 7-0 win at Knobloch Tennis Center, this time over USC Upstate on Thursday afternoon to improve to 3-1 on the season. The Spartans, opening their first season in Division I play, fell to 0-1 to start the 2008 campaign.

 

The 'Cats earned a clean swept at all three doubles matches to open up the match with a 1-0 lead in team points.

 

Senior Kim Whelan (Sewickley, Pa.) and freshman Kim Rauh (Trier, Germany) earned their team-best third doubles win of the season, while the No. 1 team of senior Kelsey Linville (Columbus, Ohio) and Virginia Berry (Spartanburg,

S.C.) and the No. 2 team of Michelle Fanney (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Teresa Wang (Charlotte, N.C.) registered their second wins of the season.

 

Five of the six players then helped the Wildcats to earn a sweep in singles play with the addition of a win by senior Meredith Skeeters at the No. 6 spot (6-0, 6-2) to earn the 7-0 win.

 

Fanney and Rauh won by the identical scores of 6-0, 6-3 at No. 4 and 5 for their second and third singles wins, respectively, this season.

 

Linville returned to the No. 1 spot after missing Davidson's match against Gardner-Webb and scored a two-set, 6-2, 6-2 win over Anna Novo for her first win of the 2008 campaign.

 

The Wildcats next play a doubleheader on Feb. 9 at home against Wingate and Queens, starting at 10 a.m.
