Georgetown 63, Appalachian State 46
WASHINGTON, D.C.- Appalachian State University women's basketball outscored Georgetown 27-25 in the second half, but was unable to muster comeback as the Mountaineers (1-9) fell behind early to the Hoyas (10-2) and dropped the contest 63-46 on Sunday afternoon.
Senior Brittany Mixon responded to an early deficit as she headed to the charity stripe but was only able to hit one of two free throws for Appalachian's first point of the game. Georgetown picked up its pace going on a 5-0 run to go up 6-1. By the 13:15 mark GU was able to extend its lead to eight points and didn't look back for the remainder of the half.
After a little over two minute scoring drought for both squads, Meredith Cox nailed a three-pointer to put GU up by 11, but Sam Ramirez was able to answer with a trey of her own to cut the margin back down to eight at 21-13. Ramirez closed out the contest with seven points, four boards and a steal.
Four straight points by Georgetown on two made free throws by Krystle Hatton and one layup off an ASU turnover pushed the score to 27-15. The Hoyas were able to score ten points in the final four minutes before the intermission while ASU was only able to score three as GU took the 38-19 lead into the half.
The Apps coughed up the ball 15 times in the first half compared to GU's seven turnovers, while Mixon paced the Mountaineers heading into the half with seven points. The forward ended the game with a team-best 11 points to go along with five rebounds and two steals.
GU came out strong after the break, as Adria Crawford hit a layup to push the score to 40-19. The Mountaineers scored two back to back buckets to cut the advantage to 17.
Sophomore Brittney Spencer had a hot shooting hand in the first seven minutes of the second half as she scored eight of ASU's 12 points, six off of three pointers. The local product scored 10 points in front of a friendly crowd to go with a team-best three assists.
Canesha Edwards got on the board at the 13 minute mark for the first time in the second half, hitting two free throws to cut GU's lead to the smallest of the second half at 13 points.
The Mountaineers would not challenge any further as a 21 percent field goal percentage hindered the offensive effort. The Apps were outrebounded 43-40 in the game as well.
The Apps look for redemption near the nation's capital on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. contest against George Mason (1-8).
Austin Peay 81, Elon 53
ELON, N.C. ? Nicole Jamen poured in 24 points as Austin Peay pulled away from Elon for an 81-53 nonconference women’s basketball victory Sunday afternoon at Alumni Gym.
The contest saw two ties and six lead changes ? all in the first half. Tiffany Davis dropped in a layup to give the Phoenix (1-11) an early 10-5 advantage with 14:35 left to play in the opening period. The Lady Governors (5-7) responded with a 16-6 surge to pull ahead 21-16 on a three-point field goal by Whitney Hanley with 9:14 remaining in the first stanza.
Elon answered with an 8-3 spurt to tie the score at 24-24 on a three-point basket by Julie Taylor with 4:55 to play before the intermission. Austin Peay reeled off the game’s next five points to forge a 29-24 edge on a trey by Salem Richardson at the 3:32 mark of the first half. The Phoenix then scored five-straight points to tie things up at 29-29 on an old-fashioned three-point play by Aiesha Harper with 2:39 to go before the break.
The Lady Governors claimed the lead for good on a jump shot by Brooke Faulkner 10 seconds later, igniting a 41-13 run that enabled Austin Peay to pull away with a 70-42 cushion on a bucket by Lauren Jones with 4:55 remaining in the contest. Elon was plagued by cold shooting in the second stanza, firing just 16.7 percent (5 of 30) in the period following 41.2-percent marksmanship (14 of 34) in the first half.
Jamen (eight rebounds, three steals), Richardson (12 points), Hanley (11 points, eight rebounds), Faulkner (10 points, seven rebounds) and Ashley Herring (five assists) all turned in key performances for the Lady Governors while Davis (15 points, four steals), Tiara Gause (12 points), Amber Wall (10 rebounds) and Harper (career-high six rebounds) led the Phoenix.
Austin Peay outscored Elon 46-32 in the paint, 14-9 on second chances and 36-8 off the bench. The Lady Governors won the battle of the boards by a 46-37 margin, but committed 25 turnovers to 23 by the Phoenix. Each team scored 24 points off turnovers.
Elon shot 29.7 percent (19 of 64) from the field for the game ? 18.8 percent (3 of 16) from three-point range ? and 57.1 percent (12 of 21) from the free throw line. Austin Peay fired 54.2 percent (32 of 59) from floor ? 30.8 percent (4 of 13) from downtown ? and 68.4 percent (13 of 19) from the charity stripe.
The Lady Governors converted 60.7 percent (17 of 28) of their field goal attempts in the second half after shooting 48.4 percent (15 of 31) from the floor in the first half.
