Chattanooga 42, Gardner-Webb 3; Chattanooga 37, Cumberland 13

 

The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga wrestling team picked up a pair of non-conference wins on the road today. The Mocs defeated Gardner-Webb (42-3) and Cumberland (37-13) in Lebanon, Tenn. The wins put UTC over the .500 mark with a season record of 6-5, including 1-0 in Southern Conference action.

 

Chattanooga began the day with an afternoon match against GWU. The Mocs dominated action, wining nine of the ten positions. Junior Cody Cleveland, ranked No. 8 in the nation in the 141-pound class, recorded his second pin of the season when he beat Chas Frans at 5:44. Senior Seth Garvin (165), junior Cody Stokes (174) and freshman Dan Waddell (149) also recorded pins in the GWU match.

 

Freshman Demetrius Johnson (125) logged his first career win with a 9-6 decision over Courtney Roberts while sophomore Jason Statum got his first win of the season, 17-5 over Matthew Featherston at 133.

 

UTC faced a tough Cumberland team in the nightcap, dropping three of the first five classes to the Bulldogs. Cleveland continued his strong season with a 12-4 win over Mike Davis. He is now 6-1 in dual meets and 9-2 overall this season. Garvin picked up his second pin of the day at 174 to improve to 8-1 in dual meets and 12-3 overall. His 12 wins now lead the team.

 

The Mocs will next travel to the Midlands Championships in Evanston, Ill., on Dec. 29-30. The next home match is set for Jan. 11 when UTC hosts No. 12 Oklahoma in Maclellan Gym at 1:00 p.m. (E.S.T.).

Davidson 22, Delaware State 21; Delaware Valley 27, Davidson 12

 

DOYLESTOWN, Pa. - The Davidson wrestling team used an overtime win by sophomore Charlie Wolff to complete a 12-point comeback and take a 22-21 victory over Delaware State in the first of their two dual meets on Friday afternoon. In the second meet, they Wildcats dropped a 27-12 decision to host Delaware Valley College to go 1-1 on the day.

Against Delaware State, Davidson (2-5) fell behind 12-0 after the first two matches, then picked up their first win via an 11-2 major decision by reigning Southern Conference Wrestler of the week Vitaly Radsky. They pulled to within two, 15-13, after freshman Tyler Mullen picked up a 7-2 decision, then took a 19-18 lead when fellow freshman Thomas Jasterzbski recorded a forfeit victory in the 184-pound class.

Wolff took the mat with Davidson facing a 21-19 deficit in the team results, and then brought home the win for the ?Cats when he was awarded a two-point takedown with only two seconds remaining in the overtime period, giving Davidson three team points and a 22-21 overall victory.

Against Delaware Valley, who has a No. 3 national ranking in their division, Davidson again found itself down after the first two weight classes, then cut the lead to 9-3 when Radsky brought home his seventh consecutive victory of the season, a 5-0 decision over Eric McCann, who was ranked No. 5 in the nation at 141.

Davidson’s next three wrestlers all won decisions, starting with David DeCamp’s 10-4 victory, then sophomore Joe McGinley, who won 5-3. Mullen also won his second match of the day ,9-2, giving the Wildcats a 12-9 lead going into the 174-pound match.

The lead, however, was short-lived, with DVC then taking the final three matches on their way to the 27-12 overall team win. Two of their final three wrestlers are either ranked in the nation or a returning All-America, who helped lead the host Aggies to the victory.

Along with Radsky and Mullen, DeCamp also swept both of his matches on the day, with the three wrestlers taking home the victories by a combined 44-10 score over their opponents.

The ?Cats will next be in action over the weekend of Dec. 29-30, when they travel up to Greensboro, N.C. for the Southern Scuffle.

Appalachian State wrestlers compete at Reno Tournament of Champions

 

Reno, Nev. - Kyle Blevins and Austin Trotman won three matches apiece to lead Appalachian State in a solid showing at the Reno Tournament of Champions.

Blevins snapped a personal six-match losing streak by defeating Missouri Valley's Jacob Guernsey 4-0 in the first round. Blevins dropped his second round match 3-1 but bounced back in the wrestlebacks to defeat Ohio's Tommy Weinkam by forfeit and Portland State's Bryan Cantrell 8-6. He lost in the fourth round of the wrestlebacks to Keegan Davis 7-2.

Trotman rolled through J.C. Oddo of The Citadel in the first round by a 12-3 major decision and followed that with a 11-9 win over MSU-Mankato's Tim Matheson. He then defeated Paul Paddock of Edinboro 3-1 to advance to the fourth round. Trotman dropped only his second match of the season when he lost to Nebraska-Kearney's Kamarudeen Usman in a close 4-3 decision. Trotman did not wrestle in the wrestlebacks.

Junior Frank Celorrio won his first match of the day dropping MSU-Mankato's Tim Haneberg by a 9-0 major decision. Celorrio lost to Edinboro's Ricky Deubel 6-3 and lost in wrestlebacks to Buffalo's Kevin Smith in another close one, 4-2. It was Celorrio's second close lost to Smith this season, as he lost to him 2-0 on Nov. 16.

Mike Kessler lost his first match but followed that up with a 10-4 decision over Kyle Wirkuty of Clackamas CC and a 9-2 decision over UC Davis' Bryan Osuna. Kessler dropped his final match of the day, a 7-0 decision to Joel Webster.

Senior Brett Houghton earned his first pin of the year when he dropped Zolboo Enkhbayar at 1:47 in the third period. Houghton dropped a 17-1 technical fall to Oklahoma State's Neil Erisman and dropped a 6-5 decision to Wyoming's Tyler Davis in the wrestlebacks.

Sophomore Dylan Temple faced No. 9 ranked Chris Honeycutt of Edinboro in the first round and lost a 7-1 decision. Temple stormed back in the wrestleback with a 13-0 major decision over Portland State's Brian Lemmon. Temple dropped a 9-7 decision, his fifth loss by two points or less, to Cal Poly's Ryan Smith.

ASU will take some time off for Christmas break before traveling to Greensboro, N.C. on Dec. 29-30 to compete in the Southern Scuffle.

The Citadel wrestlers compete at Reno Tournament of Champions

 

Reno, Nev. ? The Bulldog wrestling team placed in the top 20 at The Reno Tournament of Champions Thursday, Dec. 18.

 

The Bulldogs faced some of the nation’s toughest competition.

 

“Our guys had a solid showing at the tournament and showed a lot of improvement,” said head coach Rob Hjerling.

 

The Bulldogs placed one spot ahead of Southern Conference rival Appalachian State by only 0.5 points overall in team scoring.

 

Redshirt senior heavyweight Aaron Brown along side teammate 197-pound Odie Delaney, were two of the top finishers for the Bulldogs. Both grapplers made it to the medal round in the tournament in their respective weight classes.

 

Other wrestlers to make it to the quarterfinals were 125-pound Richard Alarcon and 184-pound Kelby Smith. Also earning points for the Bulldogs were 149-pound Justin Sparrow as well as 165-pound Derek Sickle.

 

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Dec. 29 and 30 as they take part in the Southern Scuffle host by UNC Greensboro.
