CHARLESTON, S.C. --- College of Charleston women’s soccer player Erin Smith has accepted an invitation to the Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) combine being held in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. from Dec. 18th through the 21st.

Smith is one of 144 players that will attend WPS combines on the East and West coasts. During the combines, players will undergo general training and physical testing and will be assigned to specific teams with the opportunity to play in three games over the course of three days. Players’ rights will be drafted by teams at the 2009 WPS Draft on January 16 in St. Louis at the NSCAA Convention.

Smith, a senior goal keeper, posted a solid season in between the pipes for the Cougars, as she earned a spot on the All-Southern Conference second team.

Smith earned nine shutout victories on the season and made 87 saves.  Her 0.69 goals against average was one of the lowest in the SoCon throughout the majority of the year. On Sept. 10th, Smith was named Southern Conference Player of the Week after shutting out Richmond (3-0) and Lehigh (1-0) at the Davidson Tournament.

Smith also led a Charleston defense that allowed just 14 goals on the season. The Cougars finished their 2008 season with a 12-5-3 overall mark, 5-4-2 in the SoCon.
