MT. PLEASANT, S.C. ? UNC Greensboro faces Western Carolina in the final match of the 2008 Southern Conference Women’s Soccer Championship Sunday afternoon. The top-seeded Spartans played fifth-seeded Furman to a 0-0 draw but advanced, 4-2, on penalty kicks. The Lady Catamounts, who entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed, earned a 1-0 victory over third-seeded Samford Friday evening.
The winner of Sunday’s championship match earns the league’s automatic qualifying bid to the 2008 NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship Tournament. The two hottest teams in the league, UNC Greensboro is unbeaten in its last 13 games, while Western Carolina has won 11 of its last 14 games.
The Spartans (16-4-2) picked up a 2-0 win over Western Carolina (13-7-1) in their regular-season meeting on October 10. UNC Greensboro’s Katelynn Donovan, the 2008 Southern Conference Player of the Year, scored twice during a ten-minute span in the first half to push the Spartans ahead.
Sunday’s championship match will take place at Patriots Point Soccer Stadium in Mt. Pleasant, S.C. The match will begin at 1:00 p.m. Tickets for Sunday’s game are $5 for adult tickets and $3 for student/youth tickets.
