SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? UNC Greensboro, which finished the season with a 10-0-1 mark in Southern Conference play, was rewarded by the league’s head coaches with five first-team all-conference selections and six players selected overall.
The Spartans’ senior forward Katelynn Donovan was named the 2008 SoCon Women’s Soccer Player of the Year, while head coach Eddie Radwanski was named the league’s Coach of the Year for the third consecutive season. Other Spartans to garner first-team all-conference honors included midfielder Jen Bronson, defensemen Jamie Corti and Lauren Lopez and goalkeeper Kelsey Kearney.
Donovan led the Spartans in goals (12), points (27), game-winning goals (5) and shots (44) this season. Radwanski led the Spartans to their third consecutive regular-season championship. UNC Greensboro has now won the regular-season crown in four of the last five seasons. Furman’s Martha Hall earned the league’s Freshman of the Year Award. Hall led the Paladins and was fourth in the league in goals (10) and points (25).
Furman, which finished the year 14-6-1 (7-4 SoCon), placed two members on the all-conference first team. Midfielder Rachel Fry and defenseman Kate Myatt each picked up first-team honors. Western Carolina’s Shanna Schmoker was the final midfielder on the first team. Other first team forwards included Davidson’s Kyri Bye-Nagel, College of Charleston’s Megan Manthey and Georgia Southern’s Ashley Toussaint.
College of Charleston (12-5-4, 5-4-2 SoCon) placed three members on the league’s second team. Defensemen Danielle Jordan and Brittany Schneider, along with goalkeeper Erin Smith all earned second-team plaudits. Elon (8-8-3, 4-6-1 SoCon) placed forward Katina Boozer and midfielder Katie Persichini on the second team, while Furman’s Ashley Creavalle and Hall also were second-team honorees. Chattanooga’s D.K. Henry, Davidson’s Courtney Hart, UNC Greensboro’s Nicole Danford and Western Carolina’s Arlan Whittle also were named to the all-conference second team.
Samford placed three members on the league’s inaugural all-freshman team. The Bulldogs were represented by Sarah Wilkinson, Theresa Henry and Alyssa Whitehead. UNC Greensboro’s Kearney and Danford represented the Spartans on the all-freshman team, and were joined by College of Charleston’s Hope Atkinson, Henry, Hall, Georgia Southern’s Danae Kaimuloa, Western Carolina’s Kayla Beauduy and Elon’s Andrea Keller.
