College of Charleston 94, South Carolina State 72
ORANGEBURG, S.C. - A Dustin Scott double-double (17 points, 11 rebounds) paced the College of Charleston men's basketball team to a 94-72 win over South Carolina State on Monday evening in a game played at the Smith-Hamilton-Middleton Center on the campus of South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, S.C.
In the first half, the Cougars raced out to a 28-7 lead in the game's first 11 minutes. The rally was paced both by a Cougar offensive unit that shot 71 percent from the floor, while the Charleston defense forced six turnovers and held South Carolina State to just 27 percent shooting from the floor.
From there, the Bulldogs made a rally of their own, as they outscored the Cougars 26-14 over the final 10 minutes of the first period. With that, the score stood at 42-31 in favor of the Cougars at intermission, as Tony White Jr. led the Cougars with 11 points on 5-6 shooting from the field.
In the second half, the Cougars built on their lead early in the period, only to see South Carolina State claw their way back into the game, as the Bulldogs cut the Charleston lead to 75-69 with a little over five minutes left in the contest.
It was from there that the Cougars controlled the rest of the contest, outscoring South Carolina State 19-3 over the final five minutes to take the victory.
For the game, the Cougars had six players register double-figure scoring nights. Along with Scott's 17, Andrew Goudelock also had 17 on 6-12 shooting from the floor. Antwaine Wiggins and Donovan Monroe each chipped in 13 points each, while Jeremy Simmons added 11. Marcus Hammond rounded out the Cougar double-figure scorers with 10 on the night.
Also, the Cougars have now recorded back-to-back games in which they have cracked the 90-point barrier for the first time since the 2005-06 season. The Cougars also registered their first win at South Carolina State since 1982.
The Cougars return to action on Friday, November 28th when they host South Carolina at the Carolina First Arena. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
No. 24/25 Davidson 76, Florida Atlantic 60
DAVIDSON, N.C. -- Stephen Curry scored 39 points and Davidson (No. 25 ESPN/USA Today, No. 24 AP) beat Florida Atlantic 76-60 on Monday night in an NIT Season Tip-Off consolation game.
Andrew Lovedale added 13 points and 13 rebounds for the Wildcats (4-1), who overcame 37.1 percent shooting with a 49-38 rebounding edge.
Curry shot 13-of-21 from the field, including 5-of-9 on 3-pointers.
Xavier Perkins scored 24 points and Shavar Richardson had 19 for the Owls (3-2), who cut Davidson's 11-point halftime lead in half in the opening minutes of the second half.
Down 41-30, Florida Atlantic pulled within 44-39 on Richardson's hook shot with 16:18 left. But Curry scored 12 points during a 15-1 run, capped by a pair of free throws with 11:33 left to put the Wildcats up 59-40, their biggest lead of the game.
The Owls managed to whittle Davidson's lead back to 10 points twice later in the half, the last time at 68-58 on two Perkins free throws with 6:05 left.
But Barr's 3-pointer, followed by a pair of Curry free throws, pushed the Wildcats' lead back to 15 points and gave them some breathing room.
With Curry scoring 20 points in the first half, Davidson -- which dropped three spots in the latest AP Top 25 poll after losing to then-No. 14 Oklahoma in the second round of the NIT Season Tip-Off on Nov. 18 -- never trailed. The Wildcats scored the game's first six points and built double-digit leads from there.
However, the Owls made it interesting, cutting Davidson's lead to 13-10 on Richardson's 3-point play with 14:07 left, and twice pulling within five points midway through the half, the last at 20-15 on Carderro Nwoji's 3-pointer with 11 minutes remaining.
But Curry got the Wildcats out of those jams both times. He hit a short jumper and a 3-pointer to give Davidson some breathing room, then fed Lovedale on back-to-back layups followed by another 3 with 9:06 left to put the Wildcats back up 27-15.
Florida Atlantic would pull no closer than nine points the rest of the half, with Will Archambault's hook shot with 40 seconds left giving Davidson a 41-30 lead at the break.
Samford 57, Lipscomb 50
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The Samford basketball team extended its winning streak to three-consecutive games Monday as the Bulldogs overcame a three-point halftime deficit to earn a critical 57-50 win against the Lipscomb Bisons at the Pete Hanna Center. Junior Bryan Friday tied a career-high with 20 points in the victory.
With the victory, Samford (3-1) concluded its three-game homestand with an undefeated record and improved to 3-0 this season when playing in the Pete Hanna Center.
On Saturday, the Bulldogs will begin an arduous three-game road trip with an 11 a.m. (CST) matchup against the Ohio State Buckeyes. The marquee non-conference game will be held at Value City Arena (19,049) and will be televised live on the Big Ten Network.
Samford’s Bryan Friday led all scorers with 20 points, with 18 of his game-high total coming in the second half of play. The Bulldogs’ 6-foot-6 junior from Grapevine, Texas, shot 8-of-12 from the floor and made a number successful post moves around the basket. Friday also finished with five rebounds and a steal.
In Monday’s loss, Lipscomb (2-2) was held to a season-low 27.8 percent shooting from the field. The Bisons only made 5-of-23 of their 3-point attempts and turned in a 21.7 outing from beyond the arc.
Lipscomb was led in scoring by sophomore forward Brandon Brown’s 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field. The Bisons’ 6-foot-7 native of Nashville, Tenn., also finished with 10 rebounds for his first double-double of the season.
The only other player to score in double figures for Lipscomb on Monday was Michael Teller. The 6-foot-5 triggerman was 4-of-10 from the field, with most of his damage coming from 3-point range. Teller finished 4-of-8 from beyond the arc.
With 2:29 left in the contest, Lipscomb’s Brown hit a running layup to trim Samford’s lead to 50-48. The Bulldogs then used a clinching 7-0 run down the stretch to earn their critical 57-48 advantage.
During Samford’s run, Trey Montgomery started the scoring with a driving layup to give the Bulldogs a four-point advantage. Sophomore center Andy King then knocked down a pair of free throws and Curtis West added another to extend the lead to 55-48 with 53 seconds remaining.
True to form, Bryan Friday closed out the scoring run with two more free throws to give Samford its decisive 57-50 victory. With his 20-point performance, Friday tied his career-high, matching a similar outing at Louisiana Tech last season on Feb. 23.
Samford led by as many as four points early in the first half, but a late Lipscomb run helped the Bisons take a 23-20 advantage into the intermission. Neither team shot the ball well in the opening period as they combined to post a 2-for-20 outing from beyond the arc.
The Bulldogs were 1-for-11 from 3-point range in the first half, while the Bisons finished 1-for-9.
Samford’s Bryan Friday immediately took over in the second half and scored eight of the Bulldogs’ first 11 points of the period. Sophomore Josh Davis also turned in a solid second half and knocked down a pair of early 3-pointers in the final 20 minutes of play.
Davis finished with 11 points on 3-of-7 shooting from the field and King added 10 points for Samford with a 3-of-5 outing from the floor.
The Samford University basketball team will next be in action Saturday at 11 a.m. (CST), as the Bulldogs travel to Columbus, Ohio, for a marquee non-conference matchup against the Ohio State Buckeyes.
