Davidson Competes at Keystone Classic
PHILADELPHIA, PA. - Senior Sam O'Hair brought home a runner-up finish in the 184 pound weight class and junior Ben Altman won third place at 125 to lead the Davidson wrestling team at the Keystone Classic, held Sunday on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia.
O’Hair was the leading point-producer on the day for the Wildcats, recording 16 points courtesy of advancing to the championship match at 184, where he lost a 7-5 decision to the No. 1 seed in the weight class. On his way through the bracket, O’Hair, who was the No. 2 seed, had three wins, including a first-round pin that took only 1:48, one of the fastest pins of the day. In his second-round contest, the Alexandria, Va. native advanced with a 13-4 major decision, then moved on through the semifinals via his 5-4 decision.
Despite dropping a 5-4 decision in his opening-round match, Altman came back with six-straight victories to sweep through the loser’s bracket on his way to the third-place match at 125. Altman dominated in his run through the bracket, winning all of his matchups by at least three points, including an 18-2 technical fall victory over the No. 6 seed in the bracket. In the third-place contest, Altman exacted revenge on Payne Lint, who was the one that he had fallen to in the first round, taking a 7-4 decision to garner third place and finish his day with 12.5 points.
Junior Carl Sandercock recorded a team-high two falls on the day, with his fastest coming in 4:13 in his opening-round match, then coming back with a pin that occurred 6:05 over his first competitor in the bottom bracket. He also took a 5-2 decision in his next round, before falling 7-5 to end his day. Sandercock closed the meet with six points, third-highest on the squad.
Four other wrestlers accumulated points for the team on the day, including Tyler Mullen (2 pts), Alex Radsky (0.5 pts), Kevin Cook (0.5 pts), and Charlie Wolff (0.5 pts). As a team, the Wildcats had a total of 38 points, good for ninth place out of the teams competing in the tournament.
The host Quakers of Penn brought home the team title, recording 138.5 points to edge out the runners-up from University of Pittsburgh, who came home with 135 ponts. Fellow SoCon members Appalachian State (68.5) and Virginia Military Institute (13.5), also took part in the tournament.
Davidson will now prepare to open the December portion of their schedule when they play host to the Davidson Open on Dec. 6, at the Baker Sports Complex.
VMI Competes at Keystone Classic
PHILADELPHIA- Senior Leon Barrow placed fifth in the 285-pound weight class as the VMI wrestling team competed at the Keystone Classic on Sunday afternoon at The Palestra.
Barrow (Williamsburg, Va.), who earlier this season placed fifth at the King College Open, began his run on Sunday with a 4-3 win over Brown's Zach Zdrada. Barrow next faced off with Pitt's Zack Scheaffer, ranked seventh nationally, and was pinned at the 4:50 mark. The Keydet heavyweight then dropped a 7-5 decision to Penn's Tyler Blakely, before rebounding to win the fifth-place match 3-2 over Mercyhurst's Kenny Bluska.
"Leon had a couple of good wins, and Curtis did too, but other than that, our guys are continuing that rude awakening into Division I competition," said VMI head coach John Trudgeon. "The competition was good, but we're just not where we need to be right now. In a technique-based sport like wrestling, we really need to develop our skills. We'll put the pedal to the metal and keep working hard to improve. We brought nine freshmen, four sophomores and a senior with us, and I'm hoping that we're learning some lessons along the way."
Sophomore Curtis Moore (Stafford, Va.) lost a 2-0 decision to Pitt's Brock Mantella to begin his day at 184 lbs. In the consolation bracket, Moore scored a 2-0 decision of his own over conference foe Dennis Paiva of Appalachian State, then pinned Boston's Mike Platco in 6:25. Moore's run ended with a 3-2 loss in the consolation quarterfinals to Mercyhurst's Bryan Wolff.
At 133 lbs., freshman Tyler Hutchens, a placewinner at the Hokie Open last week, suffered an injury in his first match of the day, forcing a pair of medical forfeits. Fellow freshman Michael Bowman scored a 5-3 win over Appalachian State's Lawrence White at 133, before dropping his next two matches to seeded opponents.
The Keydets also had a pair of entrants at 149 lbs. Freshman Joe Munno scored his first collegiate pin in only 1:27 against Boston's Andrew Swank before losing a major decision to nationally-ranked Cesar Grajales of Penn. Redshirt-freshman Joel Hutchens scored a win in the 149-lb. consolation bracket, a 7-1 dispatching of American's Nick Pitas.
Other Keydets posting wins on the day included sophomore Doug Nesmith at 174 and freshmen Vinnie Gallo at 165 and Matthew Brock at 157, with Nesmith and Brock each posting their first collegiate pins in those victories.
The Keydets return to action in two weeks, competing in a tri-meet hosted by Gardner-Webb. On Thursday, Dec. 4, the Keydets will take on the host Runnin' Bulldogs and Spartanburg Methodist.
Appalachian State Wrestlers Take Part in Keystone Classic
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Austin Trotman took second place at 174 and joined five Mountaineers who had at least three victories as Appalachian took sixth place at the Keystone Classic on Sunday.
Trotman's second place finish was the highest for the Mountaineers, and the second time
Trotman has placed at the Keystone Classic after a fifth place finish as a freshman last year. Sophomore Dylan Temple finished third at 184, while junior Frank Celorrio earned a fifth place finish at 133, the same as a year ago. Freshman Kyle Blevins finished in fourth place at 165. Brett Houghton also earned three wins for the Mountaineers.
Trotman's run started with a 13-3 major decision over Brown's Bran Crudden. Trotman then advanced due to a forfeit and defeated Pittsburgh's Dave Sullivan 6-2 to advance to the finals. Trotman couldn't overcome sixth ranked Mike Cannon and dropped an 11-4 decision. Trotman is 6-1 to start the season.
Temple won his first two matches of the day handily, dropping Pitt's Andy Vaughan by major decision 9-1 and pinning Boston's Mike Platco in the first period. He then dropped a 7-5 decision to eventual 184 champion Matt Gevelinger. Temple continued on in the wrestleback as he beat Vaughan again, this time 7-2, to move into the third place match where he met Mercyhurst's Bryan Wolff. Temple didn't take much time as he pinned Wolff just 2:18 into the match for a third place finish. Temple's four wins were the most of any Mountaineer on the day.
Andrew Sifakis won his first match of the day defeating Brown's TJ Popolizio 7-3. Up next was the University of Pennsylvania's Rollie Peterkin. Peterkin, ranked seventh in the country, pinned Sifakis 2:23 into the match. Sifakis pinned Penn's Zack Ellis in the second round of wrestleback's before falling to Davidson's Ben Altman.
After losing his first match 4-3, Blevins won three-straight matches to finish in fourth place. Blevins fell in the third place match to Pitt's Ethan Headlee, but earned his first pin and technical fall of the season on his way there.
At 133, Celorrio lost his first match of the day 10-8 to Rider's Matt Bradley, but won four of his final five matches for a fifth place finish. Celorrio defeated Bradley 10-4 in the fifth place match.
Mike Kessler finished the day with two wins at 141. Kessler beat Brown's Ross Baldin in the first round of wrestleback's and dropped VMI's David Yost 2-0 in the second round. Kessler fell in the third round 5-1 to Stephen DeLorenzo, also of Brown.
Chip Powell also finished with two wins on the day in the 149 pound weight class. Powell defeated Brown's Mark Bloom 3-1 before falling to No. 15 ranked Cesar Grajales 11-2. Grajales (Penn) went on to win the championship for the second year in a row. Savva Kostis also wrestled at 149 for Appalachian and picked up his first win of his collegiate career by defeating Boston's Andrew Swank 8-2.
Houghton and Alex Cooke both had a solid showing at 157. Houghton won his first two matches of the day, downing Mercyhurst's Jeremiah Hill 5-0 and posting a 10-0 major decision over Penn's T.J. Polacek. He then dropped a 5-1 decision to Rider's Mike Kessler. Kessler finished in second place. Cooke lost his first match, but came back to beat Polacek 8-5 and Pittsburgh's Jeff Warusz 5-1. The wins were Cooke's first two collegiate wins.
Antionne Jones won his first match of the season, wrestling at 165. Jones dropped VMI's Vincent Gallo 12-8.
David Pritz won his second match of the season with a 7-5 decison over VMI's Ronnie Ellsworth.
Dustin Heiser dropped both his matches at 285, the second one a hard fought 2-1 decision to Davidson's Charlie Wolff.
The Mountaineers will head to New York on Saturday, Nov. 29 to compete in the Notheast Duals (Troy, N.Y.)
Nebraska 29, Chattanooga 15
LINCOLN, Neb. ---The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (3-4) wrestling team dropped a 29-15 decision to Nebraska (1-0) in Lincoln on Thursday evening. The sixth-ranked Huskers proved too much for the Mocs where they have been strongest at positions 157, 165 and 174.
The match started at 157 where No. 19 Joey Knox dropped a major decision to No. 3 Jordan Burroughs, 17-7. Seth Garvin dropped his first match of the season to No. 5 Stephen Dwyer at 165, losing a 9-3 decision to give the Cornhuskers a 7-0 lead.
Redshirt freshman Jason McCroskey suffered his first loss of the season at 174 to No. 3 Brandon Browne on a 12-6 decision. The Huskers followed with a 15-3 major decision at 184 by Levi Wofford over Kyle McKee and a fall by No. 4 Craig Brester at 2:45 over redshirt freshman Ethan Winel at 197 in what proved to clinch the match and stake a 20-0 lead.

Sliger took a 1-0 lead on an escape with 1:49 left in the second period and was tied 2-2 after two periods. A Lane reversal at 1:55 of the third provided the winning margin.
The two teams swapped forfeits at 125 and 133 with the Mocs getting six points from freshman Paul Garza at 125. Senior Steve Hromada missed the match by not making weight.
No. 4 Cody Cleveland dominated his match with Curtis Salazar at 141. After spotting Salazar a 3-2 lead after one period, Cleveland ran off six straight points to go up 8-3 before claiming a fall at 5:38. Dan Waddell closed out the match on a good note for the Mocs with an 11-4 decision over Brian Litch at 149.
The Mocs now travel to Omaha, Neb., for the Kaufman-Brand Open at the University of Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday. The Kaufman-Brand Open, hosted by Nebraska-Omaha at Sapp Fieldhouse, has been the nation’s largest single-day collegiate meet in the nation for several years with more than 600 wrestlers from approximately 40 teams expected to compete.
