SoCon Announces Final Football Players of the Week

Presley, McLeod and Jordan Receive Weekly Honors

 

SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? The Southern Conference named its football players of the week today for the games played on Saturday, Nov. 22. Appalachian State quarterback DeAndre Presley was voted as the league’s first double winner, earning Offensive Player of the Week and Freshman of the Week honors. Western Carolina linebacker Adrian McLeod was named Defensive Player of the Week and The Citadel return specialist Asheton Jordan was tabbed Special Teams Player of the Week. The players of the week were selected by the league’s sports information directors.

 

OFFENSIVE PLAYER and FRESHMAN OF THE WEEK: DeAndre Presley, Appalachian State, Fr., QB

In his first-career start, Presley totaled 314 yards of offense and accounted for four touchdowns in ASU's 35-10 win over Western Carolina. Presley rushed for 156 yards and three touchdowns on 25 carries and completed 16-of-25 passes for 158 yards and another score. In the second half, he completed 8-of-11 passes and led ASU to touchdowns on four of its first six possessions to turn a 10-7 halftime deficit into the victory.

Other Player of the Week Nominees: Ben Widmyer (Wofford), Chris Evans (Samford) and Cam Turner (The Citadel).

Other Freshman of the Week Nominees: Jordan Tippit (Chattanooga), Asheton Jordan (The Citadel), Dustin Taliaferro (Samford), Sederrik Cunningham (Furman) and Blake Cain (Western Carolina).

 

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Adrian McLeod, Western Carolina, Jr., LB

McLeod led Western Carolina’s defense with a career-best 17 tackles, including eight solo stops and 3.5 for loss against Appalachian State. The 17 tackles were the most by a Catamount in a single-game this season. He set up a second quarter takeaway as he deflected a DeAndre Presley pass that was intercepted by teammate Mitchell Bell and led to a WCU field goal that gave the Catamounts a 10-7 halftime advantage. The junior also posted his first sack of the season on a delayed blitz, tackling Presley for an eight-yard loss in the third quarter.

Other Nominees: Rodney Shepherd (Samford), Lanston Tanyi (Appalachian State), Layton Baker (Wofford) and Neil Brown (Chattanooga).

 

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Asheton Jordan, The Citadel, Fr., RS

Jordan recorded a school-record 200 yards on eight kickoff returns with a long of 41 yards against the No. 3 Florida Gators Saturday in Gainesville. Jordan also recorded one of three touchdowns (1-yard touchdown run) against the SEC team, totaling 37 rushing and 32 receiving yards for a season-high of 276 all-purpose yards.
