Appalachian State 27, Gardner-Webb 12; Appalachian State 49, Spartanburg Methodist 6; Buffalo 29, Appalachian State 6

 

Boone, N.C. Kyle Blevins and Austin Trotman went unbeaten on the day as the Appalachian State University wrestling team won two of three matches in the season opener. Appalachian Defeated Gardner-Webb 27-12, fell to Buffalo 29-6 and beat Spartanburg Methodist 49-6.

 

In their first match of the day against Gardner-Webb, Appalachian won six of the final seven matches en route to a 27-12 season opening victory. In the first match, Bryan Rickard earned a three-point near fall with 1:08 left in the third period but was unable to get a final takedown falling to Cortney Roberts 5-4.

 

Frank Celorrio pinned Kyle Baird with 23 seconds left in the second period to put the Mountaineers on top 6-3, Appalachian would not trail the rest of the match. At 141, Mike Kessler took down Rob Tate early in the first period, but Tate earned an escape point and went on for a 6-2 win.

 

Chip Powell defeated Kurt Wentick at 149. Powell had a takedown with 50 seconds left in the first period and hung on for the 2-0 win. Powell's win was the first of six in a row for the Mountaineers.

At 157, Brett Houghton took the early lead with a takedown of Justin Guthrie. Houghton led 3-0 after the first and 4-2 after the second period.

 

Both wrestlers earned a pair of takedowns in the final period while Houghton earned a near fall, giving him a 17-9 major decision win over Guthrie.

 

Kyle Blevins earned his first collegiate victory with a 6-1 win over Dave Sweeney. After a scoreless first period, Blevins earned the first takedown of the match with 15 seconds left in the second period. Blevins finished the match with two takedowns in the third period to finish off the win.

 

Austin Trotman used five takedowns to defeat Jonathon Velazquez at 174 by major decision 13-5. Dylan Temple followed Trotman with a major decision of his own at 184 with a 14-2 win.

 

David Pritz earned his first collegiate win with a 2-1 decision over Matthias Piasecki. Pritz got a a takedown with one second left in the first period and hung on for the win. Dustin Porter pinned Dustin Heiser with 57 seconds left in the third period for Gardner-Webb's final points of the match.

 

The Mountaineers fell into a 17-0 hole against Buffalo, falling inthe first five matches. Blevins continued to have a solid day as he won a 6-3 decision over Ron Majerus. Blevins scored the decisive takedown as time expired in the second period. Trotman followed with a 10-3 decision over Nate Rock. It took Trotman only 10 seconds into the match to register the first takedown of the match, as he ended up taking Rock down three times in the match.

 

In the final match of the evening, Andrew Sifakis, Kessler, Powell and Temple all earned pin falls. Houghton, Blevins earned decisions while Celorrio, Trotman and Dennis Paiva earned wins by forfeit.

 

Appalachian will hit the road to compete in the Keystone Classic (Pa.) on Sunday, Nov. 23.

Liberty 22, The Citadel 16

 

Charleston, S.C. ? The Bulldog Grapplers lose to the Flames of Liberty University Saturday morning in McAlister Field House 22-16.

 

The Bulldogs battled hard but were unable to take down Liberty’s wrestlers. Liberty’s 184-pound Nick Knowles started off the meet with a come from behind 7-6 decision over Citadel’s Kelby Smith. The Flames heavyweight grappler Patrick Walker had a 4-1 victory over the Bulldog’s Aaron Brown. 197-pound Bulldog grappler Odie Delaney dominated Liberty’s Jacoby Johnson with a 12-1 major decision.

 

After three straight losses for the Bulldogs, leaving them behind 12-4, 141-pound Bulldog grappler Derek Royster was determined to regain momentum for the Bulldogs. Royster pinned Liberty’s Frankie Gayeski in 2:40 earning 6 points for the team score.

 

174-pound Bulldog wrestler J.C. Oddo finished out the meet with a Fall over Liberty’s Josh Pelletier in 4:00 earning the Bulldogs another 6 points. The Citadel was unable to come back and finished with a 22-16 loss to the Flames.

 

Wrestling action will continue Nov. 20 as the Bulldogs travel to George Mason to take on the Patriots in their first away meet of the season. The Citadel grapplers will then travel to Annapolis, Md., to compete in the Navy Classic Saturday Nov. 22.

Chattanooga wrestlers compete at Boilermaker Challenge

 

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The University of Tennesee at Chattanooga wrestling team dropped three of its four matches at the Boilermaker Challenge hosted by Purdue. The top wrestlers on the day for the Mocs were Seth Garvin at 165 and Jason McCroskey at 174 as each went 4-0 on the day.

 

At the time of this release, Head Coach Chris Bono was not available for comment so the status of Matt Lettner and Cody Cleveland is not available. Lettner wrestled one match before the Mocs forfeited at 285 the rest of the day and Cleveland did not compete at all.

 

In the first match, the Mocs fell to Kent State 32-10.  Joey Knox (157), Seth Garvin (165) and Jason McCroskey (174) had the Mocs wins. McCroskey scored a major decision with a 15-6 win over Jacob Donley.

 

Chattanooga claimed a 28-12 win in its second match of the day over Northern Illinois. The Mocs swept 149-197 to take control of the match. Joey Knox’s technical fall over Bryan Deutsch at 4:35 in the 157 match, along with Jason McCroskey’s major decision (10-0) at 174 over Derrick Yant and Matthew McKee’s technical fall at 4:41 at 184 paced the Mocs.

 

In round three, Eastern Michigan won by a 25-16 margin over Chattanooga. Steve Hromada (133), Joseph Knox (157), Seth Garvin (165), Jason McCroskey (174) and Ethan Winel (197) each tallied wins for the Mocs.

 

No. 11 Northwestern pulled off a 30-12 win over the Mocs in UTC’s fourth match of the day. Seth Garvin (165), Jason McCroskey (174) and Ethan Winel (197) each claimed wins for the Mocs.

 

The Mocs return to the mat on Thursday as they travel to Lincoln, Neb., to face the Cornhuskers of Nebraska.

VMI wrestlers compete at Hokie Open

 

SALEM, Va. - Freshman Tyler Hutchens placed fourth at 133 lbs. as the VMI wrestling team competed at the Hokie Open on Sunday.

 

Hutchens (Herndon, Va.) was the Keydets' lone placewinner at the event that included between 20-25 schools, including those from the ACC, CAA, SoCon and others. Hutchens was one of six Keydets competing unattached at the event, while his brother, Joel, finished 12th while competing at 149 lbs.

 

"Several of the eleven freshmen who competed on Sunday were unceremoniously welcomed to the world of Division I wrestling," said VMI head coach John Trudgeon. "This can and must be a motivator for them. Tyler and Joel Hutchens won 5 and 4 matches, respectively, including several close, hard fought one point matches, which will help their confidence as we head into another stiff test this Sunday at the Keystone Classic at the University of Pennsylvania. Our youthful squad will be competing against Pennsylvania, Rider, Pittsburgh and Boston University. We look forward to the challenge."

 

Tyler Hutchens began his day by dropping a 9-5 decision to UNC Greensboro's Angel Garcia. The freshman then went on an impressive run, winning five straight matches. He scored a decision against Appalachian State's Lawrence White, then posted a technical fall victory over King's Jason Ricker. He then advanced on a default, before winning a 4-3 decision over Liberty's Cameron Hurd. Following another default win, Hutchens dropped a 9-2 decision to Carson-

Newman's Kody Pierson after defeating Pierson only a week previous.

 

Joel Hutchens also lost his first match, dropping a major decision to Duke's Mike Bell. Hutchens rebounded to defeat teammate Richard Crozier, 6-5, before pinning King's Chris Dice. He then scored an 8-2 decision over Virginia's Sam McGregor before knocking off Adam Broda of Virginia Tech, 5-3. Hutchens run came to an end with a 9-7 loss to King's Phil Ramirez.

 

The VMI wrestling team returns to action on Sunday, competing at the Keystone Classic, being hosted by Penn.
