VCU 82, The Citadel 59
Charleston, S.C. ? The Citadel Bulldogs (1-1) were defeated by VCU (1-0), 82-59, in their first Cancun Challenge Regional game. Two players scored in double-figures for the Bulldogs with Austin Dahn and Cameron Wells leading the offense. The Bulldogs shot 86.7 percent from the foul line.
Dahn led the Bulldogs with 13 points, while Wells recorded 11 points and four rebounds. Along with Wells, Demetrius Nelson, Cosmo Morabbi and Bryan Streeter all grabbed four boards. Tyrell McDowell stripped the ball twice to lead the Bulldogs in steals.
“You have to credit VCU, especially in the first half,” said head coach Ed Conroy. “We expected it, with the experience they have and the guys they have, that they would come out tonight with a lot of energy and press us. I thought their energy level, their activity and their aggressiveness in the first half was exceptional. Our guys, quite frankly, have to do a better job of handling that pressure and we will. It rattled us early, but it was the first test on the road for this team. We’ll get better.”
The Bulldogs scored the first six points of the game. Daniel Eykyn hit back-to-back shots to give the Bulldogs an early lead. Nelson followed suit with a jumper that put the Bulldogs up, 6-0. The Rams quickly fought back, keeping the Bulldogs at six. VCU scored six straight baskets to tie the game, which was the beginning of a 14-0 run. The Citadel didn’t get back on the scoreboard until Dahn nailed a 3-pointer to halt VCU’s run.
A jumper by Wells cut the lead to three, but a free throw by Terrance Saintil extended the Ram lead. The Rams scored three more points before the Bulldogs answered with three straight free throws by Zach Urbanus. Urbanus put the Bulldogs down by four. Just as the Bulldogs started to gain on VCU, the Rams responded with four more points for a 22-14 lead.
Matt Roberts scored the first bucket of his collegiate career with 7:32 left in the half to cut the Rams’ lead to six, but the Rams answered quickly with a jumper by Brandon Rozzell to force a 5-0 run. The Rams run was stopped after Urbanus hit a 3-pointer. With 4:52 left in the half, VCU started to take control of the game. T.J. Gwynn hit a layup to put the Rams up by 12, but Wells decreased the lead to 10 after he hit a jumper. The Bulldogs would only see seven more points before the end of the half after the Rams’ defense picked up and their offense put 11 more points on the board. The Bulldogs were down, 42-28 at halftime.
The second half opened up with a layup by Urbanus. VCU put two more points on the board before a jumper by Roberts added two more points for the Bulldogs. The Rams scored four more points before the Bulldogs put another three points on the board with a 3-pointer by Dahn. With every two Bulldog points, the Rams would answer with two more of their own, and the pattern continued throughout the majority of the second half.
With 4:22 left in regulation, the Rams took a 20-point lead after a layup by Kirill Pishchalnikov. Nelson hit a layup to drop the lead back under 20, but a layup by Eric Maynor pushed the lead back up. Another layup by Nelson would drop the lead back down, but back-to-back free throws by Pishchalnikov increased the lead to 20 once more. With the Rams up, 76-56, with 3:01 left in regulation, the Bulldogs only managed to get one more basket, which came from a 3-pointer by Wells at 0:11. VCU took away an 82-59 victory.

Ed Nixon scored 11 points and grabbed five boards, while Joey Rodriguez had 10 points and led the team in steals with four.
“I thought we did a good job on Maynor and Sanders, but Maynor really impressed me with his ability to pass,” Conroy added. “We cut up the lanes on him, we showed him some ball screens and he was able to look guys off. I think he had a bigger impact on other guys scoring.”
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Thursday, Nov. 20 when they face the Hawkeyes of Iowa in McAlister Field House at 7:05 p.m. For more information on Bulldog Basketball, visit the official website of The Citadel Athletics at www.CitadelSports.com.
