Cougars Win Stono Cup Behind Kirchmayr, Puyo

Kirchmary, Puyo Lead College of Charleston Women's Golf Team to Win

 

Charleston, S.C. - Steffi Kirchmayr and Fiona Puyo both shot a 227 in three rounds to lead the College of Charleston women's golf team to the Stono Cup Women's Tournament title.  The tournament, held Oct. 6-7 at the Links at Stono Ferry, was a men's and women's combined event.  The Cougars posted a 914, 15 strokes ahead of second-place James Madison.

 

The win was the first for the Cougars this season, and the first since they won the same event last season.

 

The College of Charleston took home the Stono Cup as well.  With an 1802, the Cougars posted the best men's and women's combined score to win the cup for the second straight year.

 

Kirchmayr and Puyo both won individual medalist honors for the Cougars.  Emily Rapp carded a 229 to tie for fifth, while Leigh Whittaker tied for eighth with a 231.  Gabi Zuber rounded the Cougar top five with a 251 to tie for 32nd.

 

Courtney Brink competed as an individual and finished 12th wit ha 234.  Kati Scholten tied for 15th with a 240 and with a 276 Rachel Pendergrass finished 41st.

 

Charleston next competes at the Palmetto Intercollegiate Oct. 27-28 at Oak Point Golf Course in Kiawah Island, S.C.

Wells, Terriers finish in third at Stono Cup

HOLLYWOOD, S.C. -- Senior Erin Wells improved her score by three strokes during the final round to move into a third-place tie individually and lead the Wofford women's golf team to a third-place finish out of eight schools Tuesday at the Stono Cup at The Links at Stono Ferry in Hollywood, S.C.

Wells and the Terriers returned to the site of the 2008 Southern Conference Championship and fired a 315-301-315--931 (+67) on the par 72, 5,979-yard course.

Wells, a 2007 All-SoCon selection, posted a 77-77-74--228 (+12) to tie James Madison's Laura Mesa for third, one shot behind the medalists from College of Charleston.

Freshman Sarah Hurt proved Wofford with a pair in the top five after carding a 76-73-80--229 (+13) to be among a trio tied for fifth.

Sophomore Alex Rankin placed 14th following an 81-73-84--238 (+22), two shots and one place ahead of classmate Meredith Few. Few tied for 15th after registering an 81-78-81--240 (+24).

Junior Sarah Herbert completed the Terrier contingent with an 82-79-80--241 (+25) to tie for 17th.

Host College of Charleston won the team title by 15 strokes over second-place James Madison.

The Cougars also picked up the Stono Cup, which was awarded to the school with the lowest combined scores of its men's and women's teams. Wofford placed third in the standings out of the six eligible schools.

The Terriers will return to action Oct. 13-14 at the Spider Fall Invitational at the Independence Golf Club in Midlothian, Va.
