Furman 2, Georgia Southern 1 (2OT)
STATESBORO, Ga. -- Patrick Murray scored in double overtime to rally Furman past Georgia Southern 2-1 and extend the Paladins’ winning streak to six consecutive matches on Tuesday afternoon at Eagle Field in Statesboro, Ga.
Furman improved to 7-4-1 overall and 2-0 in SoCon play while Georgia Southern slipped to 2-6-0 overall and 0-2 in the conference.
The Eagles jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute when B.J. Reine scored on a free kick off assists from Danny Hall and Jon Kinsler.
Georgia Southern threatened to double its lead in the 33rd minute when the Eagles were awarded a penalty kick, but Paladin keeper Alec Kann made a diving save to maintain the one-goal deficit.
Furman equalized at the 79:47 on defender Patrick White’s first goal of the season. Caleb Suri played an out-swinging corner kick towards the far side of the box and White directed a header past Eagle keeper Mike Gubosh to knot the match at 1-1 and force overtime.
With just over five minutes remaining in the second overtime period, Eric Cobleigh beat his defender down the left side and sent a low cross through the box to Patrick Murray who slotted a shot past Gubosh for the game-winning goal at 104:50.
Georgia Southern outshot Furman 13-12 while the Paladins held a 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Kann stopped five shots to earn the victory in goal. Gubosh made three saves for Georgia Southern.
UNC Greensboro 1, Wofford 0 (2OT)
GREENSBORO, N.C. ? Tebatso Manyama scored 1:15 into the second overtime period as UNC Greensboro defeated Wofford, 1-0, in Southern Conference men’s soccer action Tuesday night.
The win snapped UNCG’s four-game losing skid and gave the Spartans (4-7-1, 1-2-0) their first league win of the year. Wofford (4-8-0, 0-3-0) lost its fifth straight and lost for the 15th straight time against UNCG.
After a scoreless regulation period, Wofford had an early chance before UNCG came back down the field. Manyama took the ball from the right side of the box. Dribbled along the 18-yard-line and just after crossing the midway point of the box, hit a left footer into the top left corner of the goal. It was Manyama’s first tally of the season.
The Spartans had been snakebitten in one-goal games, having played more than their share. It was the 10th time in 12 matches this year that UNCG played a one-goal game. UNCG is now 3-6-1 in those matches.
Nate Berry had three saves to record the shutout for UNCG, including a point-blank save on Wilson Hood late in regulation time. Joey Taylor had four saves for Wofford.
UNCG had a 12-9 advantage in shots and 6-4 margin in corner kicks.
Elon 2, Appalachian State 1
BOONE, N.C.- Justin Wyatt scored in the 78th minute to give Elon a 2-1 win over Appalachian State Tuesday night at Appalachian Soccer Stadium.
Wyatt took a pass from Stephen Dilger and took a shot that was saved by Collin Taylor but the rebound was to Taylor's right and Wyatt got the rebound and knocked it in for the game-winner.
Appalachian took the lead in the 21st minute when an Elon defender headed the ball over the goalkeepers head into the goal for an own goal. The Phoenix tied the game seven minutes later when Steven Kinney sent a long pass down the right side to Aaron Parker who scored from 15 yards out to tie the game at one.
In a game that featured only six combined fouls, each team took double digit shots, Elon taking 19 while the Mountaineers took 11 while Juan Obregon had a team high three.
Taylor made seven saves in goal for Appalachian who falls to 7-4-0 on the season and 2-1 in the Southern Conference while Elon improves to 4-7-1 and 3-0 in the SoCon.
