Elon men and women finish first at Hagen Stone Classic
GREENSBORO, N.C. ? The Elon men’s cross country team finished first out of eight Division I teams at the Hagen Stone Classic Saturday morning. The team’s beat out North Carolina, who took second at the meet, and SoCon foe UNC Greensboro. The first place finish is the highest the team has finished this seaon.
Leading the way for Elon was Rick Meyers who took third with a time of 26:03.5. William Schefer, Justin Gianni, and Matt Richardson also turned in top-10 performances. Schefer finished eighth with a time of 26:28.3, while Gianni and Richardson finished ninth and 10th with times of 26:31.3 and 26:37.2, respectively.
Clay Sankey noticed a 27th place finish with a time of 27:31.7. Jason MacCollum finished 34th with a time of 27:51.9, barely beating out Conor O’Brien who finished 35th with a time of27:52.4.
Also running for the Phoenix was Andrew Garrison (28:28.1), Taylor Zorski (28:32.7), Andrew Hawkey (28:53.7), Will Bertram (29:46.9), and Justin Veldhuis (29:55.8).
The men will be back in action October 17 when they travel to Boone, N.C. for the Blue Ridge Open, hosted by Appalachian State.
GREENSBORO, N.C. ? Emily Fournier’s time of 18:29.5 led the Elon women’s cross country team to a first-place finish at the Hagen Stone Classic Saturday morning. Fournier’s time was good for first-place overall.
Catherine Rossi and Caitlin Beeler recorded top-10 finished on the day with Rossi clocking a 19:20.1 for seventh and Beeler running a 19:34.8 for ninth-place.
Allyson Costa finished 13th with a time of 19:40.0, while teammate Courtney Whalen came in at 19:50.1 for 16th/
Alissa Wilke crossed the finish line in 20:05.2 for a 24th-place finish, with Colleen McCarthy finished 26th with a time of 20:07.8.
Finished 32nd was Lauren Fredrickson with a time of 20:26.7. Justine Schulerud clocked a 20:36.8 for 36th, while Jessica Doan ran a 20:54.6 for a 39th-place finish.
Also running for Elon, was Sarah McKenna (21:06.8), Madison Russo (21:08.8), and Meaghan Collins (21:18.8).
Appalachian State women finish 21st, men 13th at Paul Shot Run
BETHLEHEM, PA.- Appalachian State University women's cross country posted a solid performance Friday morning at the highly competitive Paul Short Run, hosted by Lehigh University. The Mountaineers finished 21st overall out of 43 collegiate teams on the 6k course.
Nationally ranked West Virginia (9th) finished first in the meet, with Villanova, Baylor and Wisconsin (4th), notching the first through fourth place spots. Southeast regional foes Richmond, Charlotte, Coastal Carolina and Liberty narrowly finished ahead of ASU, taking the eighth, 11th, 19th and 20th place spots respectively.
Senior Meghan Gaffney (Pompton Lakes, NJ/Pompton Lakes) paced the Black and Gold, finishing 34th overall, with a time of 21:17, setting a new personal record in the 6000m run, and moving her into third place on ASU's all-time list in the 6000m run. Teammate Hannah Parks (Kernersville, N.C./Glenn) had the second-best finish for Appalachian, coming in 114 with a time of 22:23.
Charlotte Walsh (Freehold, NJ/Freehold Township) and Ashley Norris (Boone, N.C./Watauga) also had strong performances, as Walsh finished 143rd with a time of 22:45, a personal best, and Norris finished 156th with a time of 22:50, matching her personal best time.
301 runners competed at the Paul Short Run.
The Mountaineers take a two-week break, before returning to action Friday October 17, as they host the Blue Ridge Open at 4:30 p.m. at the Don Kennedy Trails at the State Farm Complex.
BETHLEHEM, PA.- At one of the biggest meets of the year, Appalachian State University men's cross country came to perform, as the Mountaineers took home a 13th place team finish out of 45 teams on Friday at the Paul Short Run.
The Apps faced extremely tough competition as four nationally ranked teams, Wisconsin (6th), Syracuse (30th), Villanova (25th) and Iona (4th) took home the first through fourth place spots.The Apps defeated regional foe Charlotte, but were edged out by regional rivals Liberty and Richmond who grabbed the 10th and 11th place spots respectively. The Flames are ranked fifth in the Southeast region, while the Spiders were ranked right behind ASU at 10th.
Senior Asmeron Desta's (Old Fort, N.C./McDowell) performance propelled the Black and Gold to its 13th place finish, as the senior posted an impressive performance, finishing the 8k race 59th overall, with a time of 24:48, setting a new personal record. Junior Phil Mitchell (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury) also performed well for ASU, finishing 66th with a time of 24:53, just three seconds off of his personal best.
Juniors Alec Meyer (Stafford, Va./North Stafford) and Josh Houser (Alpharetta, Ga./Blessed Trinity) placed 78th and 97th to round out top-100 place finishes for the Mountaineers.
Michael Walker (Horse Show, N.C./TC Roberson) , Ryan O'Keefe (Prospect Harbor, Maine/Sumner) and Sean Soderman (Charlotte, N.C./North Mecklenberg) also competed at the meet, finishing 125, 151, and 172 respectively, out of 295 runners.
Appalachian returns to action Friday October 17, as the Mountaineers host the Blue Ridge Open at 4:30 p.m. at the Don Kennedey Trails at the State Farm Complex.
Samford women finish ninth, men 14th at Auburn Tiger Invitational
AUBURN, Ala. --- The Samford cross country teams had a good day in the Auburn Tiger Invitational Saturday as the women’s team finished ninth out of 23 teams and the men’s team finished 14th out of 24 teams at the meet held at the Pines Golf Course in Auburn, Ala. Samford head coach Rod Tiffin felt like both of his teams ran well and are taking the right steps toward earning a conference championship.
“I’m really happy with both sides,” Tiffin said. “The women did a very exceptional job in a huge field, and I feel like when we get back in a smaller field, we will run even better. We need to find each other’s teammates and run together. We had more individuals this weekend instead of a team, but it was a great effort by both squads and I feel like both groups are heading toward a conference championships and it will be exciting to see how our young girls mature over the next couple of weeks.”
The top runner for Samford Saturday was sophomore Hillary Neal, who finished 20th in the 5K race with a time of 17:07. Finishing next for the Bulldogs was freshman Andrea Seccafien who ran 18:01 for 63rd place. Rounding out the women’s team results are senior Katie Almand (18:11), freshman Deanna Zidar (18:11), junior Jessica Van Ausdall (18:28), freshman Cori Christensen (18:51), freshman Britney Harrison (18:51) and freshman All Keithan (19:01).
“I really felt like the women ran well today,” Tiffin said. “They are moving in the right direction, and I feel like we will be ready for the conference meet. It’s just another step forward in the right direction to vie for a conference championship.”
The Samford men were led by senior Cameron Bean, who finished 28th with a time of 23:49. Senior Michael Schwartz was second, coming 85th with a time of 24:58. Rounding out the Bulldog men’s team was senior Bo Brawner (25:02), sophomore Scott Cope (25:50), freshman Justin Rogers (25:54), junior Blaise Carie (26:03), freshman Matt Bryson (27:03), junior Patrick Ollinger (27:16) and freshman Jay Maservy (28”14).
“The men are getting better each week,” Tiffin said. “I really felt like it was a step forward, and we just need to make another couple of steps forward for the conference meet.”
The Bulldogs will compete again next Saturday, Oct. 11, in the Furman Invitational. This will be the final meet for Samford before the Southern Conference Championships on Nov. 1.

UNC Greensboro men finish fifth at Hagan Stone Classic; Spartan women sixth at Mason Invitational
CENTREVILLE, VA and GREENSBORO, NC ? UNC Greensboro’s men’s and women’s cross country teams raced at two meets on Saturday. The Spartans ran at the Mason Invitational at Bull Run Park in Centreville, VA and at the Hagan Stone Classic in Greensboro. At the Mason Invitational, the women, who were racing in their first 6K of the season, were sixth with 224 points, while the men took fifth with 178 points. Meanwhile, at the Hagan Stone Classic, UNCG's men's team finished sixth in the team standings.
On the women’s side, junior Sherrika Jordan paced the Spartans for the third-straight meet. Jordan covered the 6K course in a time of 22:18, which is the third-fastest time in program history. Jordan’s time ranks behind school record-holder Eleanor Wilson (21:59 in 2003) and Brigid O’Connell (22:16 in 2000). Meanwhile, sophomore Tiffany Garber was 48th with a time of 23:59. Freshman Kerry Hartman ran 24:19 and took 56th, while classmate Jade Farlow crossed the finish line in a time of 24:32 and was 62nd. Freshman Emily Vasquez clocked 24:40 and was 68th. Freshman Jenna Paley covered the course in a time of 25:00 and placed 74th. Mary Rutz was 84th with a time of 25:11. Rounding out UNCG were freshman Chelsea Willette (25:52, 100th) and sophomore Michelle Chewens (26:05, 107th).
Virginia’s Lauretta Dexubay won the race with a time of 21:29, helping the Cavaliers to a first-place team finish. The Cavaliers totaled 30 points.
Freshman Jermaine Coore led UNCG in the men’s 8K race, crossing the finish line in a time of 25:49 and placing 24th. Redshirt senior Xavier Rutz ran 26:12 and placed 35th, while redshirt senior Josh Wyatt was just seven seconds behind in 39th spot. Sophomore AJ Savoia took 55th with a time of 26:47 and junior Terry Wyatt clocked 27:05 and was 64th. Freshman Joey Thompson crossed the finish line in a time of 27:18 and was 72nd, while sophomore Andrew Clyne ran 27:25 and placed 77th. Rounding out the Spartans were junior Cory Bowen (27:59, 101st) and junior Lincoln Bennett (28:28).
Virginia’s Emil Heineking took the men’s individual crown as he had a race-winning time of 24:40. Virginia also won the men’s team title, compiling 19 points.
On the women's side at the Hagan Stone Classic, freshman Caitlin Lenz was 40th overall, covering the 5K course in a time of 21:03.9. Redshirt sophomore LaTrese Bristol ran 22:32.9 and finished 65th, while freshman Danielle Merriman was 106th with a time of 24:42.9.
Emily Fournier from Elon won the women's individual title with a time of 18:29.5. Elon also claimed the team crown with 23 points.
On the men's side at the Hagan Stone Classic, sophomore Bobby Belcher led the Spartan men. Belcher covered the 8K course in a time of 28:14.0, finishing 44th. Classmate Justin Ruppe was 48th with a time of 28:23.5, while freshman Brian Carrington ran 28:31.9 and placed 55th. Sophomore Taylor Hurst clocked 28:44.6 and finished 62nd. Junior Ryan Solomon (29:31.8) and freshman Patrick O'Connor (30:16.5) rounded out the Spartans, finishing 77th and 98th, respectively.
Johnny Shuping won the men's race with a time of 25:55.8. Elon won the team championship wiht 24 points.
UNCG's next meet is the Blue Ridge Open in Boone, NC on Friday, Oct. 17.

Wofford women 11th, men 12th at Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic
LOUISVILLE, Ky.- The Wofford men's and women's cross country teams returned to action Saturday in the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic hosted by the Greater Louisville Sports Commission. The Wofford men's team placed 12 out of the 25 team field while the women finished 11 out of 27.
Josh Shumaker was first in for Wofford on the men's side with a time of 27:28 placing him in the 61 spot. Bryan Brooks would soon follow in the 67 spot with a time of 27:35. Josh Riley would be the third Terrier to cross the finish line with a time of 28:44 to put him in the 122 position.
Mavrick Harris and Justin Hunter would be the next Terriers in with times of 28:54 and 28:59, putting them in the 132 and 138 spots. Tommy Webber would round out the Terrier runners coming in at the 166 position with a time of 29:37.
The men's race was an 8k race totaling 6 miles and was completed by 25 teams and 272 competitors.

Laura Trent had a top 40 finish for the Wofford women's team placing 38 with a time of 20:37. Kari Harris was next in line for the Terriers with a time of 21:20 placing her 70. Finishing in the 81 spot was Justina Oliva with a time of 21:31.
A trio of Terriers would then finish within seven spots of each other as Caroline Burdette finished 93 with a time of 21:45. Carolina Liddy and Pearce Tapp were right behind Burdette with times of 21:55 and 21:56 pairing them in the 98 and 99 spots.
The women's race was a 5k race, equal to 3.1 miles, finished by 27 teams and 204 individuals.

Davidson men finish 19th, women 11th at Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Davidson men's cross country team battled through the absence of three of the team's s top runners to record their fastest performance as a team for any 8K race in program history, bringing home a 19th place finish at the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic Saturday afternoon in Louisville, Ky.
The 'Cats were led by Alex Hoyt, whose time of 25:35 places him among the top ten runners ever for an 8K course in Davidson history, and gives him a 87th place finish. Right behind him was Lance Harden, who ran the third-fastest time of his career (25:41) in his first race since he suffered an injury in March of 2007.
Freshman Ryan Hopkins' mark of 26:02 was not only a career-best, but it also put his name at the top of the Davidson record books, giving Hopkins the second-fastest time by a freshman in school history, right behind Harden's 25:42 in the fall of 2005.
"This was a breakout performance for the team," said Davidson head coach Gary Andrew. "Almost everyone ran a personal-best time in the meet, with some improving by over one minute on their top times."
Other Wildcat finishers included Greg Marcil (26:08/148th), Peter Bruton (26:09/151st), Ian Tupper (26:13/160th), and Jonathan Koch (27:34/244th).
Davidson will return to action on Oct. 17 when they head up to Boone, N.C. to take part in the Blue Ridge Mountain Open on the campus of Appalachian State University.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Senior Caroline Sanker finished 15th overall to lead the Davidson Wildcat women's cross country team to an 11th-place team finish at the 2008 Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic Saturday afternoon.
Sanker finished in a time of 17:50.43 to help the Wildcats finish 11th out of 32 teams.
Sophomore Danielle Ruggieri finished 47th overall with a time of 18:34.04.
Classmates Lauren Childs and Heather Connaroe were close behind. Childs placed 82nd with a time of 18:56.86, and Connaroe finished 84th with a time of 18:56.86.
Senior Emily King finished out the scoring for the 'Cats, placing 98th with a time of 19:09.89.
The Wildcat women will take a weekend off before returning to action at the Blue Ridge Mountain Open at Oct. 17. The 'Cats will then gear up for the Southern Conference Championships, held on Nov. 1 in Spartanburg.
Western Carolina women finish 18th, men 26th at Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic
LOUISVILLE, Ky.- Running in the gold division, the Western Carolina Catamount women's cross country team finished 18th out of 32 teams while the men were 26th out of 33 at the Greater Louisville Cross Country Classic Saturday morning.
Senior Megan Issacs led the women's team with a 43rd place finish out of 265 runners with a time of 18:30.28. Senior Skye Aiello finished 92nd while sophomore Jordan Gaddy finished right after her in 93rd.
"The women's team knew they were running a man down with Lindsay Groce out with an injury, but they came out very competitive this weekend," said Head Coach Danny Williamson. "We had four of our seven women runners run or tied a lifetime best time."
Junior Stephen Hammound paced the men's team with a 61st place finish out of 294 runners with a time of 25:16.36 while sophomore Stephon Roach finished in 141. Unfortunately for the Catamounts, freshman Josey Weaver had lost his shoe while running the meet and had to complete four and a half miles with one shoe placing him in 206.
"I think it was a good weekend for us, if Weaver wouldn't have lost his shoe I think we would have been up higher in the standings," Williamson said. "Five of the seven men ran lifetime bests this weekend."
Southern Illinois won the gold division with 77 points for the men's race placing five runners in the top 25. The University of Texas won the gold division with 79 points for the women's race placing four runners in the top 25 including two in the top 10.

The Citadel women finish third, men fourth at FLrunners.com Invitational presented by Nike
Titusville, Fla. ? Five personal records were set Friday evening as The Citadel cross country program headed to the Sunshine State to compete in the FLrunners.com Invitational presented by Nike. The women’s team recorded a third place finish while the men’s team placed fourth.
Four men’s runners and one women’s runner set personal records in the meet while six other runners posted season-best times in the meet. The women’s team’s third place finish topped Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson’s performances and fell just short of the University of Miami, who finished second, and meet champion UCF.
The men’s fourth place finish also fell just short of the Hurricanes but the Bulldog men also topped Florida Gulf Coast and Stetson.
Junior Katheryn Gatewood continued her streak of leading The Citadel in every meet this season as she ran a season-best time of 19:29 to finish 14th. Junior Natalie Wolin ran her first sub-20:00 time this year, running 19:54 to place 20th. Senior Erin Ritter set a season-best mark and ran her fastest time since 2006 with a time of 20:24 to place 27th. Finishing third on the team, Ritter marked her best finish this season.
Senior Sarah Strickland placed 29th overall with a time of 20:29 while sophomore Suzanne Gay, who has had a stellar fall this season, set a new personal record with a time of 20:50 as she finished 36th.
On the men’s side, Brendan Kight fell five seconds short of tying his personal record as the junior from Sumter, S.C. placed eighth with a time of 26:53. That marked his first top-10 finish this season and his first sub-27:00 time this year.
Sophomore Zach Yereb ran a season-best time of 27:44 to finish 21st while redshirt junior Alex Anderson ran a personal-best time of 28:04 as he finished 27th. Sophomore Nathan Jackson placed 30th with a time of 28:17 while senior Zach Johnson ran a season-best time of 28:26 to place 32nd. P.J. Waslichak (35th, 28:38), Frank Dioguardi (38th, 28:48) and James Sanyi (43rd, 29:08) rounded out the men’s team, all setting personal record times.

Georgia Southern women finish fourth at Tiger Invitational
Auburn, Ala. ? The Georgia Southern Cross Country teamed finished in 4th place at the 5k Tiger Invitational Blue 5k Race Saturday morning in Auburn, Ala.
The Eagles averaged a time of 19:57.67.
Laura Fuller (Cartersville, Ga.) placed 18th and finished first for the Lady Eagles with a time of 19:41.83.
Shauntel Jennings (Stone Mountain, Ga.) finished in 19th place with a time of 19:43.89.
Kassi Lee (Elberton, Ga.) crossed the finish line third for the Lady Eagles with a time of 19:52.42.
London Ryles (Decatur, Ga.) finished 27th in her first race on the cross country team with a time of 20:06.78.
Brittani Martin (Alpharetta, Ga.) crossed the line fourth for Georgia Southern with a time of 20:23.41.
Azura Robillard (Altamonte Springs, Fla.) finished fifth for the Lady Eagles with a time of 20:48.79.
Also participating were Leah Bradley (McDonough, Ga.) and Melissa Royer (Cumming, Ga.).
Bradley finished in 49th place 21:08.30 and Royer finished in 61st place with a time of 22:04.06.
The Lady Eagles return to action Saturday October 18th at the Chattanooga meet.
