Sunday Women's Soccer Roundup

UNC Greensboro 1, College of Charleston 0 (OT)

GREENSBORO, N.C. ?  Jenn Partenheimer scored the golden goal in the 92nd minute of play to lead the UNC Greensboro women’s soccer team to a 1-0 overtime victory over College of Charleston at the UNCG Soccer stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The win marks the 24th consecutive game that the Spartans have played in Southern Conference regular season action without a loss.  The victory also marks the 99th career win for head coach Eddie Radwanski and is the third straight shut out for UNCG.

The Spartans held a 10-6 shot advantage on the afternoon, forcing College of Charleston goalkeeper Erin Smith to come up with five saves.

Partenheimer, along with Charleston’s Megan Manthey, led all shooters with four knocks on the afternoon.  Kelly Attayek and Lauren Lopez each had two in the winning effort for the Spartans.

Freshman Spartan goalkeeper Kelsey Kearney delivered two saves in her third straight shutout and fourth overall this season.  Kearney now stands with a sparkling goals against average of 0.70 for the season.  She is 5-2-1 in nine games played, having given up only six goals all year.

UNCG held the advantage on corners as well, sending six into the box to just four for the Cougars.

Partenheimer wasted no time as play started in the first overtime.  Attayek delivered a ball from the top of the box to Partenheimer who slotted the ball into the lower left corner for her third goal of the season.  The goal came on the Spartans first shot of the extra frame, just 1:56 into play.

The Spartans had an opportunity to win the game late in the second half, but a cross from Partenheimer skimmed through the six yard box without finding a Spartan.

UNCG had a few opportunities as the game developed, including a header from Jamie Corti in the early going of the first half.  Corti connected on the Spartans’ first corner of the day, but had her shot blocked by a Charleston defender on the goal line in the ninth minute of play.  Lopez connected on the rebound but sent the ball just over the cross bar.

It seemed as if the Spartans had taken the lead with just under three minutes to play in the first half, but an apparent goal by Katelynn Donovan was taken off the board due to an offside call.

Western Carolina 1, Furman 0

CULLOWHEE, N.C. -- Erin Hamilton scored on an assist from Shannon Fowkes with less than nine minutes remaining as Western Carolina blanked Furman 1-0 in Southern Conference women’s soccer action on Sunday at the Catamount Soccer Complex.

Western Carolina improved to 7-5-0 overall and a perfect 4-0 in SoCon play.  Furman slipped to 8-4-1 overall and 2-2 in the league.

Furman outshot the Catamounts 15-9, including a 4-2 edge in shots on goal, but Hamilton took advantage of a misplayed ball in the back and notched the game’s only goal with a shot over the head of Paladin keeper Jessica Smith at 81:25.

Smith made one save in the loss for Furman while Western Carolina’s stopped four shots to record the shutout for the Catamounts.

The Paladins threatened several times during the match but could not break through against Williams.  Furman’s best chance came early in the second half when Lucy Martin hit the cross bar.  The win marked the fourth straight shutout for the Catamounts.

Elon 2, The Citadel 0

ELON, N.C. -- Alix Heinicke and Katie Persichini each scored their first goals of the season while Liz Johnson recorded her ninth career shutout to lead the Elon Phoenix to a 2-0 Southern Conference women's soccer victory over The Citadel Bulldogs from Rudd Field on Sunday afternoon.  The win improved the Phoenix to 5-4-2 overall and 1-2-1 in league play while the Bulldogs dropped to 2-8-1, 0-4-0.  Elon's five wins equals the total for the 2007 squad.

Heinicke struck first just 9:23 into the match.  Brittany Hallberg fed a low ball from the left side of the goal to Heinicke at the right side.  Heinicke then deposited the pass into an open net for the tally.  It was the first game-winning score of her career for the junior.

With under 10 minutes to play in the first half, the Phoenix pushed its edge to 2-0.  Molly Calpin sent a corner into the box and Persichini directed the pass into the goal for her first score of the year.

Johnson was rarely tested in goal by the Bulldog attack and had to make just one save on the day off a shot from Amy Loughran.

Whitney Nave finished the afternoon with five saves for The Citadel.

Elon bested The Citadel in total shots (11-4), shots on goal (7-1) and fouls (7-13) while the Bulldogs edged the Phoenix in corner kicks (5-4).

Up next for Elon is a home match with Appalachian State on Friday, October 10.  The match will start at 7 p.m.  The Citadel will play host to Georgia Southern at 4 p.m. that same day.

Samford 1, Georgia Southern 0

STATESBORO, Ga. --- The Samford soccer team maintained its undefeated record against the Georgia Southern Eagles on Sunday as the Bulldogs earned a hard-fought 1-0 victory at Eagle Field. Samford’s Mary Shelton Bryant scored the game-winning goal in the eighth minute of play.

With the victory, Samford (3-8-1, 2-1-1 SoCon) improved its all-time record against Georgia Southern (4-5-2, 2-2 SoCon) to 4-0-1. The Bulldogs also extended their winning streak versus the Eagles to four-consecutive matches.

Samford, which has played 10 of its 12 games away from home this season, picked up its initial road victory of the 2008 campaign. The Bulldogs are 1-7 in road matches this year and 1-1 in neutral contests.

With Sunday’s 1-0 loss, Georgia Southern suffered its first shutout defeat since a similar loss to Georgia State on Sept. 19. In the Eagles’ last four matches, Georgia Southern was averaging three goals per contest.

Samford jumped out early Sunday and scored the game-winning goal of the match during the eighth minute of play.

At exactly 7:22 into the contest, the Bulldogs’ Bryant connected on her second goal of the 2008 season to give Samford its decisive 1-0 lead. Junior Caroline Baxter was credited with an assist on the play, her second of the year.

The Bulldogs’ Cayley Winters and Alyssa Whitehead both played in goal Sunday and shared the shutout victory. Winters started in goal and played the opening 12:12 of the match, while Whitehead came in during the 13th minute and closed out the game for Samford.

The Bulldogs outshot Georgia Southern 15-10 and earned five corner kicks compared to four for the Eagles.

Baxter led Samford with four shots attempts. Georgia Southern was paced by Ashley Toussaint, who also finished with four. Toussaint entered the match as the SoCon’s leading goal-scorer with eight this season.

Davidson 5, Chattanooga 0

DAVIDSON, N.C. - Led by junior Kyri Bye-Nagel's first multi-goal game of the season, the Davidson women's soccer team netted a season-best five goals, while the defense tallied its third straight shutout in leading the Wildcats to a 5-0 triumph over visiting Chattanooga in Southern Conference women's soccer action on Sunday.

The Wildcats ran their winning streak to four in a row in improving to 6-2-3 overall and 4-0-0 in SoCon play. The last time Davidson started 4-0-0 in league play was the 2005 campaign when it went on to go unbeaten at 9-0-1.

Chattanooga fell to 4-8-1 overall and 1-3-0 in league games.

Bye-Nagel got things started when she struck for her fifth goal of the season at the 21:56 mark. Fellow classmate Lauren Conner crossed a ball from the right endline into the box where Bye-Nagel kicked it to the near post for a 1-0 Wildcat advantage.

Up 1-0 after halftime, Davidson showcased its offensive fire-power with four more goals for the 5-0 win. Besides Bye-Nagel's second score in the second half, senior Tiffany Mumby, junior Blakely Low and sophomore Amanda Flink also found the back of the net in the winning effort.

Bye-Nagel started the scoring rally in the second half with her second goal of the game in the 51st minute. Off a free kick just past midfield on the near side, senior Melanee Smith served a perfectly placed through ball into the far side of six-yard box where a streaking Bye-Nagel timed the pass just right and drilled a right-footed shot to the far post to give her a team-high six goals on the year.

Mumby, who had a couple of direct shots on goal in the opening half, got the Wildcats third goal in the 75th minute when sophomore Allison Drutchas set up the score with a long pass to a streaking Mumby. The senior then went one-on-one with her defender, made a quick move in the box and then took a direct shot to the far post for her seventh career score.

Then in the 85th minute, junior Low tallied Davidson's fourth goal with a strike from the left of the 18-yard box after freshman Elizabeth Underwood fed her on a clean through ball deep in Moc territory.

Capping the scoring off was Flink with her third goal of the season when her shot went through the hands of Chattanooga's Allie Preston to the far post off a corner kick from Smith.

Smith pushed her team-best assist total to five, tying her career-high from her freshman year.

While the offense was click along, the backline, led by senior Chloe King, was as dominate as it has been all year. The defense did not allow a shot until the 64th minute of the second half and went on to pick up the Wildcats' fourth shutout win of the season.

Freshman goalkeeper Christy Carry picked up her second shutout win on the year by playing all 90 minutes, while Preston recorded 10 saves between the pipes for Chattanooga in a losing effort.

Appalachian State 0, Wofford 0

BOONE, N.C. -- Sophomore Katie McChesney registered nine saves and held host Appalachian State off the scoreboard as the Wofford women's soccer team posted a 0-0 double overtime tie against the Mountaineers Sunday afternoon at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex in Boone, N.C.

McChesney played all 110 minutes in net for the Terriers and faced 20 shots in all, including a game-high seven by Caroline Lowe.

Wofford (1-7-4, 0-3-1 SoCon) was led by freshman Maggie McLaughlin, who put three attempts towards the ASU net. Caroline Clarke collected six saves in between the pipes for Appalachian State (5-4-2, 1-2-1 SoCon).

Fellow Terrier rookie Sydney Reed had two shots, while Amy Zahirski and Casey Cleary each had four for the Mountaineers.

Wofford had put a ball in the back of the net with six minutes remaining in the first half, but the score was called back after a player was whistled for offsides.
