Elon 3, Georgia Southern 1
STATESBORO, Ga. ? The Georgia Southern Men’s Soccer team lost its conference opener against Elon 3-1 Saturday afternoon at Eagle Field.
The Eagles fall to 2-5-0 (0-1-0) after the loss, while Elon advances to 3-7-1 (2-0-0).
Georgia Southern held the Phoenix scoreless for most of the first half but allowed a goal in the 44th minute of action. Justin Wyatt scored off a pass from Clint Collins while freshman goalkeeper Mike Gubosh was on the ground.
The Eagles had opportunities to score in the first half. Georgia Southern had six shots on goal but were unable to place the ball in the net.
Danny Hall had one of the best opportunities to score when he made a diving header off of a corner kick pass from Joe Madigan.
The Eagles scored quickly in the second half. Jarryd Nolette scored his first goal of the season off a pass from Daniel Smith in the 48th minute of play.
Elon, however scored two quick goals to go up 3-1. Erfan Imeni scored in the 50th minute of action off a pass from Justin Wyatt. Then in the 56th minute of play Aaron Parker scored his second goal of the season off of a rebound off of Gubosh’s glove.
Georgia Southern out shot Elon 17 to 14 and eight to six in shots on goal.
College of Charleston 3, Davidson 0
MT. PLEASANT, S.C. - A two goal performance by sophomore Sean de Silva paced the College of Charleston's men's soccer team to a 3-0 victory over Davidson in Southern Conference action on Saturday afternoon at Patriot's Point Soccer Stadium.
With the win, the Cougars improve to 7-4-0 on the year, 1-1-0 in the SoCon, while Davidson falls to 2-8-1, 1-1-0 in the conference.
In the first half, the Cougars had numerous chances to score throughout the period, but could not convert. It was then with a little over 50 seconds left that de Silva lined up a free kick and floated his first goal of the year into the net to give Charleston the 1-0 lead going into the half.
In the second half, the Cougars and de Silva picked up where they left off in the first, as the Port of Spain, Trinidad native scored his second goal of the contest 45 seconds into the period off a deflection from a Davidson defender.
Yearwood then put the match away in the 53rd minute when he registered his fifth goal of the year and third score in four games off a cross from Justin Fojo.
Freshman goalie Clark Hankins earned his third shutout in four starts, after making five saves in-between the pipes for the Cougars.
Appalachian State 2, Wofford 1, (2OT)
SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Appalachian State scored in the second overtime to claim a 2-1 win over Wofford Saturday night at Snyder Field in Spartanburg, S.C.
The Terriers staved off an early offensive rush by the Mountaineers, which saw the visitors register six of the game's opening seven shots. However, senior goalkeeper Joey Taylor kept Appalachian State (7-3, 2-0 SoCon) off the scoreboard during the opening stanza.
Wofford (4-7, 0-2 SoCon) rebounded and had a scoring chance at 36:22 when sophomore Wilson Hood slipped through the Mountaineer defense, only to be tackled from behind by an ASU defender. Branson Hyatt took the ensuing free kick from 20 yards out and sent a ball around the left side of the wall to a streaking Nick Schuermann, who redirected the ball past Appalachian's Collin Taylor for the game's first goal two seconds after the initial foul at 36:24.
Wofford continued to push forward offensively and closed the shot margin to two, 7-5, at the break. The Terriers began the second half dominating possession and keeping pressure on ASU's backline and Taylor.
Hyatt nearly put the hosts up a pair when his free kick bounced off the crossbar from 25 yards out 13 minutes into the frame. Sophomore Kentrel Owens also had a header attempt saved.
The Mountaineers were able to score the equalizer at 71:04 as Juan Obregon fired a rocket from 35 yards out off the right post and into the net. Despite his shot, Wofford ended regulation with a 15-10 lead on shots after holding a 7-3 edge during the second 45 minutes.
Appalachian took advantage in the first overtime period but neither team could find the back of the net. The only shot of the second extra frame came off the foot of the Moutaineers' Antonio Harley at 104:58 and it resulted in the game winning goal.
Wofford finished with a 16-to-14 shot advantage, while Hood led all players with six attempts. Harley paced ASU with four shots.
Furman 3, UNC Greensboro 2 (2OT)
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Coleton Henning netted two goals, including the game-winning header in double overtime, to lift Furman over UNC Greensboro 3-2 in the Paladins’ Southern Conference men’s soccer season opener Saturday at Stone Stadium.
Furman improved to 6-4-1 overall and 1-0 in SoCon play. UNC Greensboro, losers of four straight, fell to 3-7-1 overall and 0-2 in the league.
Furman built a 25-9 edge in shot attempts and 12-2 advantage in shots on goal, but the game looked to be headed for a draw until Henning’s header off of an Eric Cobleigh cross at the 107:13 mark found the net just inside the far post. For Henning, the reigning SoCon Player of the Week and SoCon Player of the Month, it marked his second goal of the night and sixth on the season.
The Paladins opened the scoring at the 10:43 mark when Patrick Murray and Cobleigh combined to free Andrew Krysiak behind the defense at the top of the 18-yard box. Krysiak lined a 13-yard shot past Spartan keeper Nate Berry to stake Furman to a 1-0 lead.
UNCG evened the match at 1-1 just after the half hour mark. Cruz Oronos collected a deflected ball in space in the middle of the field and hammered a 30-yard shot past the outstretched hands of Paladin keeper Alec Kann for his first goal of the season.
Furman regained the lead with less than 14 minutes remaining in regulation on Henning’s first goal of the evening. Berry turned away Fabien Vorbe’s point-blank shot with a sliding save, but Henning punched the rebound in at 76:11 to push the Paladins ahead 2-1.
The Spartans wasted little time in answering the Furman goal. Jokull Elisabetarson took a free kick from near the right sideline in front of the UNCG bench and picked out E.J. O’Keeffe who deposited his shot into the back of the net for his first goal of the season at 76:52.
Furman held a 13-7 edge in corner kicks and 15-14 edge in fouls. Berry stopped nine shots in the loss while Kann did not record a save for Furman in his third victory in net.
UNCG returns home to host Wofford on Tuesday at 7 p.m. The Paladins travel to Georgia Southern on Tuesday at 2 p.m. before hosting Davidson on October 10, at 7 p.m.
