Georgia Southern 3, Chattanooga 2 (OT)
STATESBORO, Ga. ? The Georgia Southern Women’s Soccer team defeated Chattanooga 3-2 in overtime Friday afternoon at Eagle Field.
Freshman Danae Kaimuloa scored the first goal of the match by finding some spaced and breaking away down the right side of the field. Kaimuloa had one defender to beat and did so scoring her fourth goal of the season in the 19th minute.
Senior Ashley Toussaint put the Lady Eagles up two goals to none in the 28th minute. Toussaint scored her eight goal of the year off a pass from junior Niki Lepper.
In the 36th minute Georgia Southern was unable to clear the ball out of the box and Chattanooga got the ball past junior Lauren Santos and the Lady Eagles defense for the goal.
Chattanooga tied the match up in the 66th minute of action. Caroline DeRhodes scored her second goal of the match off a corner kick from Marlee Jenkins.
Neither team was able to score in the remainder of the second half and the match headed to overtime.
The match seemed to be headed to a second overtime, but Kaimuloa knocked in her fourth goal of the season with only 55 seconds left in the first overtime period to give Georgia Southern a 3-2 win.
Western Carolina 1, Wofford 0
CULLOWHEE, N.C. -- Wofford allowed a goal late in regulation for the only mark on the scoreboard, as the Terriers dropped a 1-0 decision at Western Carolina Friday evening in Southern Conference women's soccer action in Cullowhee, N.C.
The host Lady Catamounts dominated much of the offensive attack, finishing with a 19-5 shot advantage. However, Wofford (1-7-3, 0-3 SoCon) goalkeeper Katie McChesney kept the hosts from scoring until the latter stages. Only six of Western Carolina's shot attempts were on goal compared to four of the Terrier efforts.
The lone attempt to go past McChesney came off the foot of Shanna Schmoker on a corner kick taken by Arlan Whittle at 85:43. The Wofford sophomore goalkeeper finished with five saves, one more than the four registered by Caitlin Williams during her shutout for Western Carolina (6-5, 3-0 SoCon).
The Terriers will return to action on the road with a 2 p.m. Sunday match at Appalachian State in Boone, N.C.
UNC Greensboro 5, The Citadel 0
GREENSBORO, N.C. ? Three goals and an assist from senior Katelynn Donovan led the offensive explosion as the UNC Greensboro women’s soccer team defeated The Citadel 5-0 Friday evening at the UNCG Soccer Stadium. With the win, the Spartans remain undefeated in Southern Conference play through
23 games.
Donovan initiated and capped the Spartan (7-4-1, 2-0-1 SoCon) scoring, netting one goal in the first half and two others in the second half. The senior, along with Jenn Partenheimer, led all UNCG shooters with five shots on the evening. The Spartans as a team outshot The Citadel (2-7-1, 0-3-0 SoCon) 30-3 and also held a 13-1 advantage on corner kicks.
UNCG forced Bulldogs’ goalkeeper Whitney Nave to come up with 11 saves while Spartan keeper Kelsey Kearney registered just one in her second straight and third overall shut-out.
Donovan opened the scoring in the 19th minute of play when she took a cross from Kelly Attayek and slotted the ball into the back of the net from the top of the six yard line. An indirect kick inside the box following a Citadel foul gave Lauren Lopez her first goal of the season as she took a slight touch from Donovan and sent a shot into the lower left corner of the net at 34:25.
The second half would remain scoreless through the first 13 minutes of play, but another Bulldog foul inside the penalty area would give Partenheimer her second goal of the season. The sophomore took the penalty kick for the Spartans, sending her shot into the lower right corner past Nave in the 59th minute of play.
Donovan, whose final two goals came four and a half minutes apart in the 68th and 72nd minutes of play, sent two identical shots into the lower right corner from 20 yards away to net her fourth and fifth goals of the season. The senior, who entered the match with just five points on the year, finished the night with a total of seven.
Davidson 3, Samford 0
DAVIDSON, N.C. --- The Samford University soccer team was defeated in Southern Conference play for the first time in school history Friday as the Bulldogs dropped a 3-0 decision on the road against the Davidson Wildcats at Alumni Stadium.
With the loss, Samford (2-8-1, 1-1-1 SoCon) fell to 0-7 in road matches this season. So far this year, the Bulldogs have played a total of 11 games, nine of which have taken place away from Bulldog Field.
Davidson (5-2-3, 3-0 SoCon) remained undefeated in league play and extended its winning streak to three-consecutive matches. Last week, the Wildcats earned road victories against both Furman 3-2 and Wofford 1-0.
At 14:21 in the match, Davidson’s Tracy McClausland tallied her second goal of the season to give the Wildcats an early 1-0 lead. On the score, McClausland fired a shot from 28 yards out that found the top left corner of the net. The goal proved to be her second game-winner of the 2008 campaign.
Samford outshot Davidson in the first half 4-2 and was led offensively by true freshman Mary Shelton Bryant. Bryant, a native of Signal Mountain, Tenn., paced the Bulldogs with two shot attempts in the game.
Following the opening 45 minutes of play, Davidson led 1-0 at halftime despite trailing in both shot attempts and corner kicks.
Samford’s starting goalkeeper, Cayley Winters, the reigning SoCon Student-Athlete of the Week, finished the match with two saves, both of which occurred in the second half.
During the final period, Davidson tacked on goals during the 54th and 66th minutes of play. With their pair of second-half scores, the Wildcats earned a 3-0 victory.
Davidson’s second goal of the game was tallied by Amanda Flink and was assisted by Melanee Smith. The score was Flink’s second of the season and the assist was Smith’s team-leading third of the 2008 campaign.
At 65:15 in the second half, the Wildcats added their third goal of the game as Kyri Bye-Nagel notched an unassisted score. The goal was her fourth of the season and was tallied on an 18-yard shot to the far post. Bye-Nagel is Davidson’s team leader in goals with four.
Elon 1, College of Charleston 1
ELON, N.C. -- Katina Boozer's goal with 8:08 remaining in regulation tied the Elon Phoenix with the visiting College of Charleston Cougars 1-1 and forced an overtime session in which neither team could score, keeping the Southern Conference game a draw. The tie ended a five-match winning streak for CofC against Elon. It was the first point of the SoCon season for the Phoenix who moved to 4-4-2 overall and 0-2-1 in league play. The Cougars are now 8-2-2, 1-1-1.
Following a scoreless first half in which Elon put two shots on goal to one for CofC, the Cougars broke through with the game's first tally at 57:43. Julie Romanik's corner kick found the head of Katie Browne at the back side of the goal mouth and the shot was directed right in the goal for the score, Browne's second of the year.
With time winding down, CofC was whistled for a foul just outside the box. Boozer lined up the free kick from 19 yards out and blasted a shot into the lower left corner of the goal for her second score of the year.
Boozer's goal would be the last shot on frame for either team for the rest of the night. The Cougars got off three shots in OT while Elon mustered two attempts, but none of the five shots had to be saved.
Elon's Sydney Little allowed the one score while making four saves while going the distance. The Phoenix defense also headed out one shot.
Erin Smith also stopped four shot and allowed one goal in her 110 minutes of work for the Cougars.
Overall, College of Charleston bested Elon in total shots (15-9), shots on goal (6-5) and corner kicks (9-3). Fouls were even at 13 apiece.
Elon will play host to The Citadel in a 2 p.m. match on Sunday afternoon while College of Charleston will visit UNC Greensboro in a 1 p.m. contest that same day.
