College of Charleston Women's Golf Tied for Second after First Round
Second Round Suspended Due to Darkness
Kiawah Island, S.C. - Steffi Kirchmayr shot a 72, while Emily Rapp added a 74 to lead the College of Charleston women's golf team to a tie for second after the first round of the Palmetto Intercollegiate being held at Oak Point Golf Course in Kiawah Island, S.C. East Tennessee State is just one stroke ahead in first place with a 299. The Cougars are tied with Arkansas Little Rock after 18 holes. The second round was suspended at 6:30 p.m. due to darkness and will resume Tuesday morning before the third round begins.
ETSU's Mayte Vizcarrondo leads the tournament with a 70, while Maryland's Alexis Holmes follows with a 71. Kirchmayr is tied for third along with Charleston Southern's Olivia Higgins and Northern Iowa's Ann Arnason. Rapp is tied for ninth to help pace the Cougars.
Fiona Puyo and Leigh Whittaker both shot a 77 for the Cougars in the first round to sit tied for 31st, while Courtney Brink is tied for 60th after firing an 81.
Three Cougars are competing as individuals. Gabi Zuber is tied for 53rd with her 80, while Rachel Pendergrass is tied for 69th with an 82. Katie Scholten rounds out the Cougar effort with an 87 to sit tied for 84th.
The golfers will finish the second round beginning at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday before playing the third round immediately after. The pairings will remain the same.

Women’s Golf Tied for Sixth at Palmetto Intercollegiate; Second Round Suspended Due to Darkness
Trio of Catamounts tied for 15th-place after 18 holes on Monday
Kiawah Island, S.C. ? A trio of Catamounts each carded opening round scores of 75 Monday as Western Carolina stands tied with Princeton for sixth place after the second round was suspended due to darkness at the 2008 Palmetto Intercollegiate being played at the par 72, 5,955-yard Oak Point Golf Course.
Scheduled for 36 holes on Monday and a third, 18-hole round on Tuesday, the teams were forced from the course as the round was suspended at approximately 6:30 pm. Although the second round began on Monday, scores are not official for release until after the completion for every golfer.
Competition will resume on Tuesday morning with the conclusion of the second round, immediately followed by the final 18 holes.
Catamount junior Desire Karlsson, sophomore Josefine Sundh and freshman Blaire Minter each carded rounds of three-over par, 75, to be in the clubhouse amidst an eight-way tie for 15th. Both Karlsson, who is tied for fifth in the tournament with 13 pars over the opening 18 holes, and Sundh opened with three-over, 39, on the front before shooting par on the back nine.
Rounding out Western’s order from Monday were freshmen Rachel Nelson, tied for 53rd after an opening round 80, and Ashley Shinn in a tie for 82nd with a round of 86. Nelson played the front nine at even-par 36, but shot 44 on the back to finish the day at eight over.
East Tennessee State was the only squad to break the 300-plateau on Monday, carding an 11-over, 299, to lead Arkansas-Little Rock and host-school, the College of Charleston, by a stroke. Wisconsin is four strokes off the pace in fourth at 303, with Georgia State one stroke in arrears with an opening round 304 for fifth.
Mayte Vizcarrondo of ETSU fired a two-under, 70, to lead the Maryland’s Alexis Holmes by a stroke in the individual competition. The duo are followed by a three-way tie at even-par, 72, including CofC’s Steffi Kirchmayr, Olivia Higgins of Charleston Southern and Ann Arnason from Northern Iowa.

Herbert shoots season best in leading Terriers
FT. MYERS, Fla. -- Wofford junior Sarah Herbert tallied the two lowest rounds of her season thus far to finish as the top Terrier individual following the first two rounds and 36 holes at the Pat Bradley Invitational on the par 72, 6,118-yard Pelican Preserve Golf Club in Ft. Myers, Fla., Monday.
Herbert, who shot a 77 during the season-opening round at the Cullowhee Cafe Great Smokies Intercollegiate Sept. 15, matched the output then lowered her score by three strokes over the next 18 holes to fire a 77-74--151 (+7) to tie for 15th during opening day action.
She helped Wofford to a 15-stroke improvement from the first to second round, which included a 303 during the second 18 for the team's fifth-best team score of the season.
Sophomore Alex Rankin entered the clubhouse in a 29th-place tie following an 80-74--154 (+10), two strokes ahead of freshman Sarah Hurt. Hurt garnered a 39th-place tying result after registering a 79-77--156 (+12).
Senior Erin Wells was the final Terrier counter with an 82-78--160 (+16) to tie for 57th.
Sophomore Meredith Few concluded the Wofford contingent with her 82-80--162 (+18) to tie for 60th.
Host Florida International holds a five-shot lead over Florida Southern in the team standings, while the Panthers' Paula Hurtado is on top of the individual leaderboard with the only sub-par effort, a 7-under par 137.
The two-day, 54-hole event will conclude with the final 18 holes Tuesday.
