Fall Tennis Weekend Review

Furman women compete at ITA MidEast Regional

 

Day 1

 

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. ? Junior Jessica Preeg fell in the second round of qualifying singles play at the Wilson/ITA MidEast Regional on Thursday, hosted by Wake Forest University.

 

In the first round, Preeg defeated Amelia Harris of Louisville, who advanced through pre-qualifying by scores of 6-4, 6-1.

 

In round two, Ryann Cutillo of Wake Forest topped Preeg by scores of 6-2, 6-4.

 

Play in the main draw of singles begins on Friday, with Furman’s Monica Arguello and Laura Gioia set to compete.

 

Day 2

 

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. ? Senior women’s tennis player Laura Gioia advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA MidEast Regional, while sophomore Monica Arguello fell in the round of 32.

 

In doubles play Saturday morning, the team of Gioia and Arguello fell to Maria Sorbello and Rosalia Alda of Tennessee by a score of 9-8 (1).

 

In singles play, Arguello was defeated by Sierra Poske of Wake Forest by scores of 7-6 (1), 6-0 in the round of 32.

 

Also in the round of 32, senior Gioia advanced with a win over Kelly Holtzhausen of Tennessee Tech, 6-1, 5-7, 6-3. Gioia then went on to top Sophie Grabinski of UNC by scores of 6-4, 6-2 to move on to the round of 16. She will face Keilly Ulery of Vanderbilt in the quarterfinals on Sunday.

 

Day 3

 

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. ? Women’s tennis players Laura Gioia and Monica Arguello opened main draw play at the ITA MidEast Regional in winning fashion, with the pair picking up a doubles victory and two individual singles wins.

 

With a bye in the double round of 64, the Paladin tandem opened play Friday morning with a victory over Emilee Malvehy and Christian Tara of host team Wake Forest by a score of 8-5 in the round of 32. Gioia and Arguello will face Maria Sorbello and Rosalia Alda of Tennessee in the doubles round of 16 on Saturday.

 

The Paladins were equally successful in singles play on Friday. Sophomore Arguello picked up an easy win over Neils Barringer of NC State, 6-2, 6-1 to advance to the round of 32, where she will face Sierra Poske of Wake Forest on Saturday.

 

Senior Gioia also won in the opening round, defeating Jennifer Meredith of Tennessee by scores of 6-1, 5-7, 6-3. Gioia will face Kelly Holtzhausen of Tennessee Tech in the round of 32 on Saturday.

 

Day 4

 

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. ? Senior women’s tennis player Laura Gioia advanced to the semifinal round of the ITA MidEast Regional on Sunday.

 

Gioia sailed through the quarterfinals with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Keilly Ulery of Vanderbilt. She will face fourth-seeded Reka Zsilinska of Duke in the semifinals on Monday.

 

With North Carolina’s Sanaz Marand falling in the round of 16 on Saturday, second-seeded Gioia is now the highest seeded player remaining in the tournament.

 

Day 5

 

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. ? With a win in the semifinals, senior women’s tennis player Laura Gioia advanced to the finals of the ITA Southeast Regional, but fell in the finals.

 

Gioia defeated Reka Szilinska of Duke in the semifinals by scores of 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the finals.

 

In the finals, Gioia fell to Josipa Bek of Clemson, 6-2, 7-5. With the loss, Gioia secured a second-place finish in the ITA Southeast Regional Championship.

 

 

Samford men participates in Crimson Tide Fall Championships

 

Day 1

 

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. --- The Samford University men’s tennis team opened play in the 2008 Crimson Tide Fall Championships with an unblemished 3-0 record Friday as a trio of Bulldog doubles teams advanced at the prestigious tournament being held at the University of Alabama.

 

Due to Friday’s rain, play was moved indoors to the Hank Crisp Facility and only the first round of doubles action was completed.

 

Samford finished day one of the 2008 Crimson Tide Fall Championships with three victories. In opening-round action, the Bulldogs’ doubles combinations of Kelwin DeWet and Brian Dushock, Carl Abalos and Carson Kadi and Michael Browder and Richard Walsh were all triumphant.

 

Samford’s DeWet and Dushock advanced past Mississippi State’s tandem of Ryan Farlow and Antonio Lastre, 8-6, in opening-round action, while Abalos and Kadi defeated Troy’s combination of Phil Janz and Maxime Zamora, 8-5.

 

The Bulldogs’ third victory of the day was achieved by Browder and Walsh who outlasted UT Martin’s duo comprised of Matthew Harris and Alfredo Krywacz, 9-8.

 

The Samford University men’s tennis team will resume play in the 2008 Crimson Tide Fall Championships on Saturday at 9 a.m., at the University of Alabama Tennis Stadium, Recreation Courts and Hank Crisp Indoor Facility in Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Day 2

 

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. --- A trio of Samford men’s tennis players picked up victories Saturday on the second day of the 2008 Crimson Tide Fall Championships hosted by the University of Alabama. The Bulldogs’ Oliver Reynolds, Brian Dushock and Michael Browder were all triumphant in singles play.

 

Reynolds, Samford’s sophomore from McDonough, Ga., earned a pair of singles wins in the Bart Starr draw held at the Varsity Tennis Courts. With the dominating victories, he advanced to Sunday’s championship match where he is scheduled to face Jacksonville’s Matthew Rock at 10:30 a.m.

 

In the second round, Reynolds breezed by Troy’s Diego Martinez, 6-0, 6-1, before he obliterated Virginia Tech’s Preston Lemon in the semifinals, 6-0, 6-2.

 

Samford’s Dushock and Browder were both victorious in consolation action Saturday. Dushock outlasted UT Martin’s Alfredo Krywacz, 2-6, 6-2, 1-0(5), while Browder knocked off Chattanooga’s Alex Butnarcuic, 1-6, 6-4, 1-0(4).

 

The Samford University men’s tennis team will conclude play in the 2008 Crimson Tide Fall Championships on Sunday at 9 a.m., at the University of Alabama Tennis Stadium.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. --- The Samford University men’s tennis team concluded play in the 2008 Crimson Tide Fall Championships on Sunday as sophomore Oliver Reynolds fell short in the title match of the Bart Starr Singles Draw.

 

Reynolds, the Bulldogs’ sophomore native of McDonough, Ga., squared off against Jacksonville’s Mathew Rock in Sunday’s championship match and dropped a 6-4, 6-2 decision. Despite the loss, Reynolds finished the weekend with a stellar 3-1 record in singles play.

 

The Samford University men’s tennis team will next be in action Nov. 21-23, as the Bulldogs travel to Auburn, Ala., for the annual Auburn University Fall Invitational.

Samford women participate in ITA Southern Regional Championships

 

Day 1

 

ATHENS, Ga. --- The Samford University women’s tennis team competed in the opening day of the 2008 ITA Southern Regional Championships on Friday at the indoor courts of the Dan Magill Tennis Center. The rain-shortened doubles event was hosted by the University of Georgia.

 

In doubles play, Samford’s combination of Taylor Morgan and Lindsey Mallory faced a tough task in Georgia Tech’s fourth-seeded duo of Noelle Hickey and Christy Striplin. The Yellow Jackets’ doubles pair is the 46th-ranked tandem in the nation and rallied for an 8-4 win over the Bulldogs’ duo of Morgan/Mallory.

 

Samford’s doubles team comprised of Stephanie Parkison and Andrie Meiring also suffered a hard-fought loss on Friday. In the opening round of play held at the Dan Magill Tennis Center, Parkison and Meiring fell short against Alabama’s doubles combination of Merritt Emery and Alice Tunaru, 8-3.

 

The Samford University women’s tennis team will resume play in the 2008 ITA Southern Regional Championships on Saturday at 10 a.m., at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex on the campus of the University of Georgia in Athens, Ga.

Day 2

 

ATHENS, Ga. --- The Samford University women’s tennis team competed in one of the most prestigious tournaments of the 2008 fall season Saturday and earned a pair of victories in singles play at the 2008 ITA Southern Regional Championships.

 

On the second day of the four-day tournament hosted by the University of Georgia, Samford earned a pair of wins in the singles draw. The Bulldogs’ Lindsey Mallory fought past UAB’s Jennifer Cape in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, and Andrie Meiring outlasted Troy’s Mirte Debakker, 6-4, 7-5.

 

With their first-round victories, Samford’s Mallory and Meiring both advanced to the second round of the singles draw.

 

Meiring squared off against Lauren Shumate of USF in the round of 16, but dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision in the match. Mallory was also defeated in the second round of singles play versus Georgia Southern’s Ali Beavers, 6-0, 6-0.

 

The Samford University women’s tennis team will conclude play in the 2008 ITA Southern Regional Championships on Sunday at 10 a.m. (CT), at Georgia’s Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
