Chattanooga Finishes 11th at the Derby Invitational

AUBURN, Ala.---Against a strong field, the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s golf team finished 11th at the Derby Invitational played at the AU Club in Auburn, Ala.  The 32nd-ranked Lady Mocs completed the 54-hole event at 925 (+61).

Sophomore Emma de Groot and freshman Maju Loza tied for the low round of the day for the Lady Mocs at one-over par 73.  They did it in different fashions as de Groot had four birdies balanced against five bogeys, while Loza had a team-high 13 pars to go with two birdies and three bogeys.  The duo led Chattanooga to its best round of the three days, a fourteen-over par 302.

Freshman Maria Salinas and junior Kayla Stewart shot 76 (+4) and 80 (+8), respectively, to round out the Lady Mocs scoring on the day.  Sophomore Christine Wolf shot an 81 (+9).

Loza completed the tournament tied for 24th at 228 (+12) improving her score each day (78-77-73).  One shot back was de Groot (79-77-73) tied with Salinas (79-74-76) in 28th at 229 (+13).  Wolf (81-78-81) and Stewart (81-79-80) tied for 72nd at 240 (+24).

No. 3 Arizona State ran away with the title shooting three-under par 285 to finish the event at 869 (+5), 18 shots clear of second-place Virginia, ranked No. 8, at 887.  No. 7 Alabama was third at 892 (+29).  The Sun Devils Anna Nordqvist won medalist honors with a nine-under par 207 following today’s 70 (-2).

The Lady Mocs finished one shot ahead of UCF, four in front of Furman, six clear of Mississippi State and Kansas and 30 ahead of Florida State among others.  This concludes the fall portion of Chattanooga’s schedule.  The Lady Mocs return to action Feb. 22-24 at the Wildcat Invitational hosted by Arizona in Puerto Penasco, Mexico.

Furman’s Lamb Claims 14th At The Derby Invitational

Auburn, Ala. -- Furman’s Blair Lamb fired a final round 72 to finish with a share of 14th place on Sunday at The Derby Invitational at the par-72 Auburn University Club.

Lamb (76-77-72=225) recorded a birdie and only one bogey to go with 16 pars in the final round of the 54-hole event. 

Arizona State (300-284-285=869) carded a 285 on Sunday to cruise to an 18-stroke victory over second place Virginia (289-298-300=887) with Alabama, Auburn and Mississippi rounding out the top five.  Furman (309-313-307=929) finished in 13th place.

The Sun Devils Anna Nordqvist (70-67-70=207) held on for a four-stroke victory over teammate Azahara Munoz and Virginia’s Whitney Neuhauser.
