UNC Greensboro 5, Georgia Southern 1
GREENSBORO, N.C. ? Katelynn Donovan had two goals and an assist and Kelly Attayek had a goal and two assists as UNC Greensboro extended its SoCon regular season unbeaten streak to 29 straight with a 5-1 win over Georgia Southern on Friday night at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
The Spartans scored three times in the first 18 minutes to put the game out of reach early. UNCG moved to 13-4-1 on the season and remained atop the Southern Conference standings with a 8-0-1 mark in league play. Georgia Southern, which is on the bubble for making the eight-team conference tournament, dropped to 4-9-3 overall, 2-6-1 in the league.
Attayek started the scoring just 4:01 into the match. Nicole Danford found Katelynn Donovan on the left side of the box. A one-touch pass from Donovan found Attayek for her third goal of the season.
Jennifer Bronson made it 2-0 just 3:51 later. Attayek found her at the penalty stripe and Bronson chipped it home for her first tally of the season.
Donovan got into the act at 17:49 when Attayek hit a cross into the box and the senior from Melville, NY got a head onto it and put into the back of the net for a three-goal lead.
The Eagles got one back at 55:28 when Ashley Toussaint, the Southern Conference’s scoring leader, tallied her 12th goal of the season. She converted a UNCG giveaway into a one-on-one with the keeper and made it a 3-1 game.
But Jamie Etten scored her first of the season at 71:53 off of a Danford feed and Donovan added her 11th of the year at 80:06 for good measure. The Spartans outshot the Eagles 22-2 on the night and had a 6-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Western Carolina 2, Chattanooga 0
CULLOWHEE, N.C. ? The Western Carolina women’s soccer team used a goal in each half, to defeat the Chattanooga Mocs 2-0 Friday night. The Catamounts improve to 11-6 overall and 8-1 in the Southern Conference after the victory while Chattanooga drops to 5-12-1 and 2-7 in the SoCon after the loss.
The victory for Western Carolina extends its winning streak to four games including five straight wins at the Catamount Athletic Complex against Southern Conference opponents.
In the 18th minute of play the Catamounts found the back of the net when junior Shanna Schmoker beat the Mocs keeper Allie Preston in the right corner to give Western Carolina a 1-0 lead. Schmoker took the pass from teammates Rachael Shomper and Shannon Fowkes for her team leading fifth goal of the season.
The Catamounts finished the first half with a 10-to-1 advantage in shots with Mocs keeper Preston coming up with four saves to keep the game close at 1-0.
Western Carolina added another goal in the 87th minute thanks to a penalty kick goal by junior Bri Cunningham for her third goal of the season to make the score 2-0 Catamounts. Cunningham was taken down inside the box and then delivered the strike past the Mocs keeper Preston on the right side of the goal.
The Catamounts defense played another great game despite the rainy and wet atmosphere surrounding the Catamount Athletic Complex Friday evening. One key moment in the game came when Chattanooga midfielder Donna-Kay Henry had broke though with a breakaway but Catamounts defender Liz Eichler chased her down with a slide tackler to preserve the victory.
Western Carolina finished the game with 19 shots including nine attempts on goal, holding the Mocs to just four shots with only one coming on goal.
Samford 1, Appalachian State 0
BOONE, N.C. --- The Samford University soccer team extended its undefeated streak to six-consecutive games Friday as the Bulldogs fought to a 1-0 Southern Conference road victory against the Appalachian State Mountaineers at the Ted Mackorell Soccer Complex.
With Friday’s shutout win, Samford (7-8-2, 6-1-2 SoCon) picked up its third-straight victory and remained undefeated in six-consecutive matches. The Bulldogs have not been defeated since Oct. 3.
In Samford’s last six games, the Bulldogs have not allowed a single goal and their lone blemish was a 0-0 draw at Wofford on Oct. 12. Since, Oct. 3, Samford has outscored its opposition 10-0.
Sarah Wilkinson, the Bulldogs’ explosive freshman forward tallied the lone goal of the match during the 27th minute of play. The game-winning score was initiated by sophomore Leah Leppert who centered a pass to Wilkinson near the Mountaineers’ penalty box.
Wilkinson, Samford’s speedy native from Euless, Texas, gathered Leppert’s pass, beat a defender and then rifled a shot off the post into the back of the net. The deciding goal was Wilkinson’s third of the season.
Samford’s Alyssa Whitehead, the reigning SoCon Player of the Week, started in goal for the Bulldogs on Friday and registered her third shutout of the 2008 campaign. Samford’s highly-touted, 6-foot-3 freshman from Hattiesburg, Miss., has gone 535:53-consecutive minutes without allowing a goal.
Appalachian State (6-8-2, 2-6-1 SoCon) suffered its fourth loss in five games Friday.
Appalachian State’s offensive attack was led by junior forward Caroline Lowe. The native of Raleigh, N.C., attempted five shots Friday with one being on-goal.
Samford outshot Appalachian State 13-9 and the Bulldogs tallied one more corner kick than the Mountaineers 4-3.
College of Charleston ? Furman (Rescheduled)
CHARLESTON, S.C. ? Due to inclement weather the College of Charleston-Furman women’s soccer match has been rescheduled for Saturday at 1:00 p.m. Furman (10-6-1, 4-4 SoCon) will take on CofC (10-4-3, 3-3-2 SoCon) Saturday afternoon before facing The Citadel Sunday at 1:00 p.m. College of Charleston will entertain Wofford Sunday at 1:00 p.m..
