SPARTANBURG, S.C. ? Samford’s Alyssa Whitehead has been named the Southern Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Week for the week of October 14-20.  Whitehead helped the Bulldogs earn two shutout wins in league play last week, as Samford topped College of Charleston (1-0) and The Citadel (4-0).  She went 135 minutes in net last week without giving up a goal and has not allowed a goal in her last 445 minutes in net.

Whitehead recorded four saves in Friday’s victory over College of Charleston.  In Sunday’s game against The Citadel, she posted two saves and left the game at halftime with the Bulldogs leading, 3-0.  Whitehead has not allowed a goal since September 19 against Auburn.  Whitehead is seventh in the league in save percentage (.778) and is tied for ninth place with two shutouts this season.  Whitehead is also ninth in the league in goal against average (1.36).

Other top performers this week were Appalachian State’s Amy Zahirski, College of Charleston’s Erin Smith, Davidson’s Tiffany Mumby, Elon’s Sydney Little, Furman’s Martha Hall, Georgia Southern’s Ashley Toussaint, The Citadel’s Laura Serafino, UNC Greensboro’s Mary Kate Towne and Western Carolina’s Kayla Beauduy.
