UNC Greensboro 1, Wofford 0
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- UNC Greensboro scored early in the first half against host Wofford and both teams battled the rain throughout the night as the Spartans came away with a 1-0 Southern Conference women's soccer victory Friday evening at Snyder Field in Spartanburg, S.C. The rain was constant but never created much of a distraction for either team on the field.
UNC Greensboro (11-4-1, 6-0-1 SoCon) controlled much of the action in the first half, carrying a 5-2 shot advantage into the half. Lauren Lopez moved up from her defensive position to have the Spartans' best opportunity in the opening 45 minutes, but her shot was saved by Terrier goalkeeper Katie McChesney.
Early in the second half, Mary Kate Towne picked up a loose ball along the Wofford (2-8-5, 1-4-2 SoCon) backline and raced towards the net. As she approached the cage, she dished the ball to Katelynn Donovan, who was running alongside her, and Donovan put the ball behind McChesney from six yards out at 51:01 for the only goal of the match.
The Terriers would then increase their offensive attack and not allow UNCG another shot the rest of the contest. Freshmen Anne Breeden and Sydney Reed each had a chance to score the equalizer, but Breeden's header was saved by Kelsey Kearney and Reed's blast sailed just high over the crossbar.
Wofford finished with a 9-7 shot advantage and closed the corner kick battle to one, to 5-4 in the Spartans' favor. Reed led the home team with three shots, while Donovan collected a game-high four to pace UNC Greensboro.
Western Carolina 2, Georgia Southern 1
STATESBORO, Ga. ? The Georgia Southern Women’s Soccer team lost to Western Carolina 2-1 Friday afternoon at Eagle Field.
Senior Ashley Toussaint scored her 11th goal of the season in the 69th minute of the match. Michelle Berard picked up the assist by passing the ball from the left side of the net to Toussaint who was on the other side of the box. Toussaint is now tied with Katy Znosko and Tara Chaisson for eighth place all-time in goals scored in a single season.
Western Carolina led at halftime with a score of 1-0. Kayla Beauduy scored off of a Bri Cunningham pass in the 22nd minute of play.
The Catamounts went up 2-0 in the 63rd minute when Shanna Schmoker scored on another Bri Cunningham pass.
Caitlin Williams and the Western Carolina defense held the Eagles without a shot on goal in the first half of play. Lauren Santos made six saves in the match for GSU.
Furman 1, Elon 0
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Martha Hall netted her third game-winning goal of the season in the 80th minute to help Furman edge Elon, 1-0, in Southern Conference women’s soccer action Friday evening at Stone Soccer Stadium.
The shutout improved Furman to 10-5-1 overall and 4-3 in the SoCon while Elon slipped to 6-6-2 overall and 2-4-1 in the conference. With its 10th victory, Furman reached double digit wins for the 12th consecutive season.
Hall, a freshman from Knoxville, Tenn., provided all the offense the Paladins would need receiving an assists from Rachel Fry and dribbling past a defender before sliding a shot inside the right post at the 79:18 mark for her team-leading seventh goal of the season.
Both teams threatened to grab an early lead, but came away empty. Lucy Martin opened the game with a pair of shots inside the box. The first shot was cleared off of the line by a defender and goalkeeper Sydney Little smothered the rebound at the right post to keep the match
scoreless. Moments later, Kerri Speer created a one-versus-one chance with Paladin keeper Jessica Smith after dribbling past the Furman defense on the right side of the box, but her 16-yard effort was saved by Smith.
Furman held a 15-9 edge in shots and 10-4 advantage in shots on goal. The Paladins attempted four corner kicks without surrendering one to the Phoenix.
Smith notched her fifth shutout in goal and upped her record to 8-2-1 on the season stopping four shots. Little was credited with eight saves for the Phoenix.
Elon travels to Spartanburg, S.C., to face Wofford on Sunday. Furman will celebrate Senior Day when it hosts rival UNC Greensboro on Sunday at 2 p.m.
Chattanooga 2, The Citadel 0
CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Chattanooga women’s soccer team shut out The Citadel 2-0 on a cool, crisp Friday night at the North River Soccer Complex.
UTC freshman D.K. Henry netted her second multi-goal game of the season and led the Lady Mocs to their second Southern Conference win of the season, matching their league win total from last season.
Both of Henry’s goals came in the first half with the first in the 21st minute. She took a pass from teammate Morgan Shelton and beat out her defender down the middle for the game-winner.
Her second goal came less than one minute later on a free kick. Chelsea Hurst sent a hard shot to the far post and Henry elevated over the defenders to knock a header into net to put the Lady Mocs up 2-0.
Chattanooga outshot the Bulldogs 19-5 with Henry leading the way with six shots. The Citadel’s keeper Whitney Nave had six saves on the night with three in each half.
The Citadel will remain on the road Sunday to take on SoCon freshman Samford in an afternoon matchup in Birmingham, Ala. The Lady Mocs will host the College of Charleston Sunday at 2 p.m. at the North River Complex to close out the home portion of their schedule.
Samford 1, College of Charleston 0
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The College of Charleston's women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to Samford on Friday night in Southern Conference action on the road in Birmingham, Ala.
With the loss, the Cougars fall to 9-4-3 on the year, 2-3-2 in the SoCon, while Samford improves to 5-8-2 overall, 4-1-2 in the SoCon with the victory.
In the first half, both Samford and the Cougars fired five shots each at the goal, but were denied each time by goalie's Erin Smith of Charleston and Alyssa Whitehead of Samford. Smith made four saves in the half to keep the Bulldogs off the scoreboard.
In the second half, Smith continued to play masterfully in goal, but Samford eventually broke through in the 75th minute when Leah Lippert scored her second goal of the season after shooting the ball through a crowd of Charleston defenders and into the net. Both Carolina Baxter and Hilary Samuels were credited with assists on the play.
From there, Samford hung on the rest of the match to preserve the win. At the end of the night, Smith made a total of nine saves on the 11 shots she faced on goal on the night. Offensively for the Cougars, Chrissy Caruso led the way, making four shots on the night.
