Tuesday Men's Soccer Roundup

College of Charleston 2, Georgia Southern 1

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. --- The College of Charleston men's soccer team picked up their second Southern Conference win of the season, as they knocked off Georgia Southern, 2-1,  in a physical affair at Patriots Point Soccer Stadium on Tuesday night.

With the win, the Cougars move to 8-5-0 on the year, 2-2-0 in the SoCon, while Georgia Southern drops to 3-7-0 (1-3-0 in the SoCon).

In the first period, the Cougars were first, as John Bello scored his first goal of the season in the 30th minute after he received the ball off a deflection from a Georgia Southern defender right in front of the net.

The Eagles, however, knotted the game up at one when B.J Reine took a cross from teammate Jon Cox to score his second goal of the season in the 33rd minute. Both teams failed the score the rest of the period, as the match remained tied at one going into the half.

In the second half, the Cougars took their second lead of the night in the 56th minute when a Georgia Southern defender headed in a goal in his own net off a Charleston cross that made the score 2-1. This tally would prove to be the deciding factor in the match, as the Cougars proceeded to hang on to the 2-1 lead the rest of the way.

Goalie Clark Hankins held Georgia Southern scoreless after giving up the first half tally and made four saves in between the pipes to pick up his fifth win of the season.

Clemson 1, Wofford 0

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Wofford battled for 90 minutes and only surrendered one goal in dropping a hard-fought 1-0 decision to Clemson Tuesday night in non-conference men's soccer action at Snyder Field in Spartanburg, S.C. The final score marked the closest match in the nine-game series, dating back to 1985.

Wofford (4-9) displayed a full team commitment in its attempt to tally the first win against the Tigers since the two teams began playing each other. The Terriers won the overall shots battle, holding a slim 14-12 advantage, but Clemson was on top, 5-4, in shots on goal.

The hosts held the Tigers off the scoreboard for 80 minutes until Keegan Priest collected his second goal of the season at 80:41. Teammates Tommy Drake and Eric Cava played the ball back-and-forth amongst themselves before sending the ball wide along the left flank to Priest. Priest dribbled towards the 18-yard box and let a shot rip from roughly 20 yards out to the far right corner past Wofford goalkeeper Joey Taylor.

The Terriers, however, did not quit and kept pressure on the Clemson (4-5-2) net until the final horn sounded.

Sophomore Wilson Hood led all players with five shots, while senior Phil Beene added three to the Wofford offensive attack.

Cava paced the Tigers with three, while Drank, Nick Burton and Hassan Ibrahim tallied two apiece.

Joseph Bendik gathered three saves in the shutout for Clemson. The Tigers' defense was credited with a team save after clearing a second-half attempt off the backline.

Taylor finished with four saves, three of which came during the opening 45 minutes.

Wofford will return to Southern Conference action with a 6 p.m. Saturday meeting with Upstate rival Furman at Snyder Field in the second of a current four-game homestand.

Wake Forest 6, UNC Greensboro 0

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. ? Cody Arnoux had a pair of goals and an assist to lead top-ranked Wake Forest to its 18th-consecutive win, a 6-0 shutout of UNC Greensboro at Spry Stadium on Wednesday night.

The win was the 200th for Wake Forest head coach Jay Vidovich and the Deacons’ 27th straight at home. In his 15th season, Vidovich is now

200-87-15 as a head coach.

The Deacons, who have now scored 23 goals in their last five matches, scored quickly on Wednesday to try to snuff out any upset ideas UNCG might have had. Ike Opara got a head on Jamie Franks’ corner kick 9:24 into the match for his fifth goal of the season and a 1-0 lead. Arnoux followed with a shot from 17 yards out just 2:26 later and Wake Forest had a 2-0 lead.

The Spartans (5-8-1) looked like they had minimized the damage from that point, but Zack Schilawski scored just before the intermission. With just 53 seconds remaining in the opening half, Schilawski scored off a deflection to give Wake Forest a 3-0 lead at the break.

Arnoux then assisted on Sam Cronin’s goal at 58:50 and added another at

61:51 to complete his five-point night.

Wake Forest outshot UNCG, 28-7, and had a 9-3 advantage in corner kicks.

The Spartans return to Southern Conference play on Saturday when they visit College of Charleston for a key league match-up.
