The Collegiate Volleyball Update (CVU.com) is pleased to announce that Tennessee-Chattanooga senior Lara Newberry has been selected as the CVU.com National Player of the Week for Oct. 6 through Oct. 12.

A 5-7 libero from Chattanooga, Tenn., Newberry not only helped the Lady Mocs to a pair of conference victories, but also had an NCAA record-setting week in the process.

The senior got things started off last Wednesday against Samford, scooping 24 digs to surpass the NCAA career digs mark of 2,791. Newberry finished the night with 2,801 for her career.

Then Saturday, Newberry was back for an encore performance. In a 3-2 win over Southern Conference foe Wofford, she lifted a career-high 51 digs. That total is a Chattanooga single-match record and the second highest recorded in Division I this season.

Finally, to close out the week, Newberry helped lift the Lady Mocs to a 3-1 win against Furman, their first victory over the Paladins since 2003. In that match, Newberry scooped up another 27 digs.

For the week, Newberry finished with 102 digs over 12 sets, averaging an astounding 8.5 digs per set. She is now averaging 6.32 digs per set on the season, putting her at second in the country for this year.

This is Newberry’s second CVU.com National Player of the Week award.
