East Carolina leads, UNCG second after opening round at UNCG-Starmount Fall Classic
GREENSBORO, NC ? Defending tournament champion East Carolina has a three-shot lead over tournament host UNC Greensboro after one round at the UNCG-Starmount Fall Classic women’s golf tournament.
Paced by individual leader Abby Bools, the Pirates shot 295 as a team on Sunday to take the early lead. East Carolina’s Ana Maria Puche is tied for second after shooting a 72, along with Georgia State’s Anna Scott.
Bools recorded the only sub-par round of the afternoon on the 6,215-yard course. She had five birdies on the day, overcoming a bogey on her very first hole to go out in 35 and come back in 33.
UNCG is second at 298, followed by UNC Wilmington at 300, Georgia State one shot behind them and South Florida and East Tennessee State in a tie for fifth at 304.
UNCG’s Ashley Parrott and Annelie Weimenhog are part of a five-way tie for fourth after shooting rounds of 73. Parrott, a senior from Johnson City, TN, closed her round with a birdie on No. 18, her only one of the day, to finish two-over for the afternoon. She shot 73 in the opening round of this tournament last year, as well. Weimenhog went out in 38, but rallied to shoot 35 on the back side thanks to consecutive birdies on Nos. 13 and 14.
The second round gets underway Monday morning with tee times at 8:30 am off of No. 1 and 8:45 am at No. 10.

Lady Mocs Jump in the Top 10 at Mercedes-Benz Women’s Championship
KNOXVILLE, Tenn.---Chattanooga, ranked No. 30 in the Golfstat rankings, fired a final round 295 to jump from 13th up into a tie for ninth at the Mercedes-Benz Women’s Championship at Fox Den Country Club. The Lady Mocs tied Kentucky while jumping Texas A&M, Furman and UCF.
Freshman Maria Salinas, the GoMocs.com spotlight player heading into the event, scored her second top 10 finish of the season. Salinas carded a two-under par 70 to move into a tie for 10th at 217, one-over par for the 54-hole event. She had three birdies to go with just one bogey for the round.
Sophomore Emma de Groot shook off a slow start to the tourney with an even par 72 to complete the event tied for 43rd. She was consistent with two birdies and two pars in her way around the par-72 trek finishing at 226 (+10).
Freshman Maju Loza had a disappointing final round of 79 (+7), but it was a solid event for her. Loza finished at plus-nine 225. Sophomore Christine Wolf’s 76 placed her tied for 54th at 228 (+12), while junior Kayla Stewart shot 77 (+5) to finish tied for 72nd at 233 (+17).
LSU won the team title coming back from seven down to North Carolina behind a seven-under par 281. The Tigers shot one-over par 865, nine shots clear of the Tar Heels and North Carolina State at 874 (+10). N.C. State’s Lauren Doughtie won medalist honors with a final round 68 (-4) to total 209 (-7).
The Lady Mocs return to action Friday, October 24, at the Derby Invitational. The three-day, 54-hole event is hosted by Auburn at the AU Club in Auburn, Ala.

Furman Fades In Mercedes-Benz Championship Final Round
Knoxville, Tenn. -- The Furman women’s golf team carded a final round 306 to finish with a share of 12th place at the Mercedes-Benz Women’s Championship at the par-72 Fox Den Country Club on Sunday afternoon.
Blair Lamb (72-71-75=218) capped a two-over-par tournament with a final round 75 to gain a share of 13th place. Stefanie Kenoyer (72-75-76=223) and Brie Heinzler (80-76-76=232) posted rounds of four-over 76 on Sunday to finish in 28th and 69th, respectively.
Sophomore Jackie Hilea (70-72-79=221), who entered the day in sixth place, opened her round with a double bogey and faded to 25th place with a seven-over 79.
LSU claimed the team title by nine strokes blistering the field with a final round 281. The Tigers, 10 strokes better than the second best final round score, finished nine strokes ahead of North Carolina and North Carolina State. Louisville and Mississippi rounded out the top five.
North Carolina State’s Lauren Doughtie (68-73-68=209) claimed individual medalist honors behind a four-under 68 on Sunday. She finished two strokes in front of Mississippi’s Dori Carter and Louisville’s Cindy LaCrosse.
