Women's Fall Tennis Weekend Review

Georgia Southern concludes UNF Invitational

 

Day 1

 

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Georgia Southern Women’s Tennis Team completed the first day of the UNF Invitational Friday in Jacksonville.

 

In the A draw of doubles Christine Caforio (Acworth, Ga.) and Melanie Rolle (Gainesville, Fla.) defeated Natalie Araya and Anna Djananova from Middle Tennessee State 8-6.

 

In the B draw Jessica Fuller (Cartersville, Ga.) and Kristi Kegerreis (Fairfax, Va.) lost to Marlene Chemin and Taylor Coffey from Middle Tennessee State 8-4.

 

In the C draw both Georgia Southern teams were victorious. Emma Knight and Molly Maddox defeated Vita Moskaliova and Andra Voinea from former SoCon member East Tennessee State 8-6. Ali Beavers and Shea Huxtable beat Megan Jones from FIU and Elvira Yusupova from Jacksonville 8-5.

 

In the A draw of singles Kegerreis lost to Taylor Morgan from Samford 6-4, 6-2, and Beavers lost 6-3, 6-0 to Aline Berkenbrock from North Florida.

 

Fuller won her first match 6-0, 5-7, 6-2 over Samantha Lange from Stetson in the B draw of singles.

 

Maddox defeated Rebecca Kirven from Samford 6-3, 7-6 (5) in B singles action.

 

In the C draw Knight defeated Reijina Hopkins from Bethune-Cookman 6-0, 6-0.

 

The second day of the UNF Invitational continues tomorrow with Rolle and Caforio finishing up their rain-suspended matches.

 

Day 2

 

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. ? The Georgia Southern Women’s Tennis team finished up the second day of the UNF Invitational.

 

Jessica Fuller (Cartersville, Ga.) lost 6-2, 6-3 to Megan Jones from FIU in the B draw of singles.

 

Also in the B draw of singles, Molly Maddox (Rome, Ga.) defeated Ina Durcakova from UNF 6-1, 6-4, but then lost 6-4, 6-3 to Maria Pazo in the quarterfinal round.

 

Melanie Rolle (Gainesville, Fla.) won rain-suspended match 7-5, 6-7 (5), 6-3 over Lindsey Mallory from Samford. Rolle then faced off against Marietta Bigus from Middle Tennessee State and won 6-3, 6-0. Rolle lost in the semifinals to Mirte Debakker 6-3, 6-2.

 

In the C draw of singles, Emma Knight (Duluth, Ga.) defeated Anna Djananova from MTSU 5-0, default. Knight then faced Stephanie Parkison from Samford in the Semifinals. Parkison won the match 6-0, 6-2.

 

Shea Huxtable (Winter Springs, Ga.) lost to Leonie Giujt from Troy in the C draw of singles 6-1, 6-1.

 

Christine Caforio (Acworth, Ga.) defeated Jacqueline Faulk from Stetson 6-2, 6-2 in her first match of the tournament, but she lost her second match to Fernanda Carrero from Jacksonville 6-7 (5), 6-3, 10-4.

 

In the A draw consolation, Kristi Kegerreis (Fairfax, Va.) defeated Eva Hankova 6-0, 6-2.

 

No doubles matches were play Saturday due to the rain.

 

Day 3

 

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. ? The Georgia Southern Women's Tennis team concluded the North Florida Invitational Sunday at the UNF Tennis Courts in Jacksonville, Fla.

 

Kristi Kegerreis (Fairfax, Va.) defeated Paula Jaime from ETSU 6-3, 6-4 in the A singles consolidation.

 

Ali Beavers (Kingsport, Tenn.) defeated Natalie Araya 6-1, 1-6, 10-3. She then defeated Alyona Tsutskova 4-6, 7-6 (5), 10-7 in the A singles consolidation.

 

Molly Maddox (Gainesville, Fla.) and Emma Knight (Duluth, Ga.) lost 8-3 in the C doubles semifinals to Andrea Herrera and Paula Jaime.

 

The Lady Eagles return to the courts at the ITA Regional on Friday October 24th.

 

 

Chattanooga finishes Ole Miss Fall Classic

 

OXFORD, Miss. --- The Lady Mocs tennis team’s weekend at the Ole Miss Fall Classic ended early Saturday at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center.

 

After posting an impressive first round win Friday over Memphis’ Amanda Brown, UTC’s Beata Knizat fell 6-1, 6-0 to Leydi Zora of South Alabama in the quarterfinals. In the D Flight singles, the result was somewhat similar for the Lady Mocs’ Brianna Wishing and Annie Green.

 

Wishing fell 6-4, 6-1 to Arkansas-Little Rock’s Sybille De Rochefort in the quarters. After falling 6-1 in the opening set to Arkansas State’s Emily Laing, Green pushed the second set to the limit, but lost 7-5 in her quarterfinal match. In the B Flight singles, Jennemieke van der Veek lost her consolation match to Arkansas State’s Rone’ van Wyk 6-1, 6-0.

 

In doubles competition, Chattanooga duo Green and Shaina Singh fell 8-3 to Mia Gordon and Marina R.D. Gaun of Louisiana-Lafayette.

 

Next up on the agenda for the Chattanooga women’s team is a trip to Winston-Salem, N.C., for the ITA Southeast Regional beginning Oct. 23.

 

 

Samford concludes UNF Fall Invitational

 

Day 1

 

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - In the first day of the 2008 UNF Invitational, Samford's Taylor Morgan picked up a victory in singles play Friday, while Andrie Meiring and Stephanie Parkison teamed to win in doubles action. Lindsey Mallory and Morgan also paired to a victory in the doubles bracket.

 

Morgan, a native of Jacksonville, Fla., defeated Georgia Southern, 6-4, 6-2, in the opening round of singles play. In doubles action, she teamed with Mallory and routed Stetson's Breanna Atkinson and Katherine Nowicki, 8-1.

 

Also in doubles play, Samford's Meiring and Parkison knocked off Stetson's Natalie Gorham and Unnati Purushotham, 8-2.

 

Day 2

 

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - On the final day of the 2008 UNF Fall Invitational, a trio of Samford women's tennis players picked up victories in consolation action held at the University of North Florida Tennis Complex. Earning wins for the Bulldogs were Rebecca Kirven, Lindsey Mallory and Karen Niszl.

 

Kirven tallied a straight-set victory over Jacksonville's Elvina Yusupova, 6-4, 6-1, while Niszl held off a late rally from Stetson's Daniella Palmiotto, 6-3, 3-6, 11-9. Mallory, Samford's sophomore from Louisville, Ky., steamrolled Boston College's Andrea Paez, 6-0, 6-0.

 

In tournament play, the Bulldogs' Stephanie Parkison suffered her first defeat of the weekend Sunday against Troy's Leonie Giujt in the semifinal round of singles action. The score of the match was 6-1, 6-2.

 

The Samford University women's tennis team will next be in action Friday-Sunday as the Bulldogs travel to Houston, Texas, for the 2008 Rice Fall Invitational.

 

 

UNC Greensboro concludes play at UNC Wilmington Invitational

 

Day 1

 

WILMINGTON, NC ? Valerie Behr and Lucy Dougherty advanced to the doubles Flight A semifinals with a pair of wins and Dougherty, Sarah Templeton and Valerie Akel all advanced in singles action to highlight the first day for UNC Greensboro at the UNC Wilmington Invitational Tennis Tournament on Friday.

 

Behr and Dougherty won twice Friday to set up a Saturday morning semifinal round match up with Kayla Schwenk and Christina Lee of UNC Wilmington. They beat UNCG’s Britney Cloer and Jess Eblen in the quarterfinal round on Friday.

 

Templeton, who won a flight singles title at this tournament a year ago, beat Leonie Mandelkow of Charleston Southern in straight sets, 7-6 and 6-2, winning the tie-breaker 7-4, in Flight C action. Akel also advanced in Flight C with a straight-set win over Radford’s Emerald Lauzon. Lucy Dougherty also won in Flight B, making quick work of Ashley Rogers from North Carolina Central, 6-0 and 6-4.

WILMINGTON, NC ? Five different Spartans split a pair of singles matches as UNC Greensboro concluded play at the rain-shortened UNC Wilmington Invitational women’s tennis tournament concluded on Sunday.

 

Arielle VonStrolley, Lucy Dougherty, Jess Eblen, Sarah Templeton and Courtney Akel all split two singles matches as brackets were abbreviated after rain cancelled play on Saturday.

 

UNCG returns to action October 22 with the ITA Regional Tournament in Winston-Salem.

Elon wraps up Elon Invitational

 

Day 1

 

BURLINGTON, N.C. -- From the Burlington Tennis Center, the Elon Phoenix women's tennis team had a solid performance on day one of the 2008 Elon Invitational.  Elon's Anna Milian and Campbell's Blanca Saenz lead all players with eight points after the first day's play.  In doubles, Campbell's team of Ana Surviladze and Cristina Garcia Brunet and USC Upstate's Anna Novo and Emilia Milovanovic have four points each.

 

To earn her eight points, Milian defeated USC Upstate's Novo 7-6 (3), 6-2.  Saenz got her eight points by knocking off Laura Simon of Longwood 2-6, 6-0, 10-8.

 

Elisa Simonetti also earned singles points for Elon, claiming six points after a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Carolina Bello of USC Upstate.  Laura Graybill earned one point for her singles decision over Longwood's Sydney Emerson by a 6-1, 6-2 margin.  Jessica Margolis also finished with a point after defeating Longwood's Chelsea Gray 8-0 in a pro set.

 

Surviladze/Garcia Brunet picked up four points for a win over Longwood's Zsofia Jakab and Simon by an 8-5 margin.  Novo/Milovanovic claimed an 8-1 victory over Elon's duo of Milian/Simonetti.

 

Elon's Paige Kensrue and Daleen Kloppers teamed up to earn three points with an 8-1 doubles victory over USC Upstate's Carolina Bello and Vivian Neuenschwander.  Melissa Wolf and Sally Wilkey also earned two doubles points with a 9-8 (7-4) win over Daniela Lovera and Cinthya Lazaro of USC Upstate.

ELON, N.C. ? Elisa Simonetti finished 3-0 to earn 19 points and a first-place finish at the Elon Invitational.  Teammate Anna Milian grabbed a second-place finish over USC Upstate’s Anna Novo with 16 points.

 

Novo also finished with 16 points, but Milian’s head-to-head victory over Novo gave her sole possession of second-place.  Paige Kensrue had 15 points for weekend, giving her a fourth-place finish over all.  Campbell’s Cristina Garcia Brunet rounded out the top-five finishes with a point total of 14.

 

Campbell’s duo of Liza Beshsimon and Blanca Saenz took the doubles championship with nine total points.
