Elon hosted Elon Invitational
Day 1
ELON, N.C. -- Elon's Damon Gooch won his singles match and teamed up with Philip Nemec for a doubles victory to lead the Phoenix on the first day of the 2008 Elon Invitational from the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center at Elon. Gooch and Campbell's Davey Sum each have nine points to lead the singles action. The duos of Gooch/Nemec and Campbell's Sum/Lubos Sobotka each have five points to sit atop the doubles standings following day one.
Gooch picked up his nine points with a 4-6, 6-1, 10-8 decision over USC Upstate's Jack Roux. Sum earned nine points by defeating Longwood's Brandon Lindsley 6-3, 6-1.
Elon also saw Nemec earn a singles win for seven points as he claimed a 6-1, 6-3 win over USC Upstate's Leandro Osorio. Chase Helpingstine earned six points by defeating USC Upstate's Nicolas Ospina 6-0, 6-1. Kevin Beard, Clark Howell, Chris Spalding and Alex Crockford all also earned their singles matches for the Phoenix. Carlin Murray won in an exhibition match for Elon as well.
In doubles, Gooch/Nemec picked up five points with an 8-5 victory over Roux/Osoria while Sum/Sobotka claimed an 8-4 decision over Longwood's David Cardoso/Billy Heird.
All of Elon's doubles teams won as the duos of Helpingstine/Alberto Rojas, Cody Stauffer-MacDowell/Murray, Spalding/Crockford all won. The Phoenix team of Howell/Beard won in a doubles exhibition.

Day 2
ELON, N.C. ? Elon’s Damon Gooch finished the singles portion of the Elon Invitational with 27 points and was named the tournament’s singles champion. Arnold Loverd of USC Upstate was the finalist with 24 points. In all, Elon players earned three of the top five spots in the singles portion.
Philip Nemec finished behind Loverd with 21 points, while Chase Helpingstine finished with the
fourth highest point total with 20. Rounding out the top-five was Campbell’s Davey Sum with 18 points.
Gooch and Nemec’s success continued to the doubles portion of the Elon Invitational as they earned 15 points to become the doubles champions. The duo of Helpingstine and Alberto Rojas were the doubles finalists with 12 points. Longwood’s Brandon Lindsley and Carlos Garcia finished third with eight points.
Elon will be back in action starting Thursday when it travels to Chapel Hill, N.C. for the ITA Regional qualifying.

Appalachian State at the Davidson Invitational
Day 1
Davidson, N.C.- The Appalachian State men's tennis team competed against Charlotte and Furman Friday evening at the Davidson Invitational and won six matches.
In doubles competition, Peter Jacobs and Eddie Elliott beat Charlotte 9-7 while Peter Jacobs and Phillip Kloc lost 8-6 and Jordan Moser and Britton Webb fell 8-3. In doubles against Furman, Appalachian took two out of three matches. Floyd and Kloc won the first flight 8-2 while Elliot and Jacobs won the second flight 9-7. Webb and Taylor Bianco fell in the third flight 8-4.
The Mountaineers faced off against Charlotte in singles competition. Singles winners were Floyd, who won first flight 7-5, 6-4, Kloc, who won third flight 4-6, 3-6, (10-7) and Webb, who won fourth flight singles 6-2, 3-6, (11-9).
Day 2
Davidson, N.C.- Peter Jacobs and Phillip Kloc won four matches apiece for the men's tennis team at the Davidson Invitational on Sunday afternoon.
Against Furman, Jacobs beat Ethan Asher 6-3, 6-3 in second flight singles and teamed up with Eddie Elliott to beat Robert Brunner and Watson George 8-6. Kloc beat Andrei Chvetsov 6-0, 1-6 (10-7) and paired up with Lee Floyd to beat Chveston and Philipp Fuelkell 8-2.
Freshman Jordan Moser beat Luis Soto 6-2, 6-3 in singles competition.
Against Davidson, Jacobs won second flight singles over Walker Lyons 6-3, 6-0 while Kloc beat Scott Myers in third flight singles 6-1, 6-2. Lee Floyd won first flight singles 6-7, 7-6 (10-7).
Appalachian took over in doubles competition winning all three matches. Kloc and Floyd won 8-5 while Jacobs and Elliott won 8-4. In third flight doubles, Moser and Britton Webb won 8-2.
Appalachian travels to College of Charleston on Oct. 24-26 to compete in the C of C tournament.
Davidson hosted Jim Causey/Davidson Invitational
DAVIDSON, N.C. ? Freshman Calum Gee (Ayr, Scotland) combined to score four singles and doubles wins in his third career fall collegiate event, and sophomore Carter Braxton (Charlotte, N.C.) matched Gee with two singles wins of his own as the Davidson men's tennis team hosted the two-day Jim Causey/Davidson Invitational, Oct. 10-11, on the Covington Tennis Courts.
Along with Davidson, Southern Conference opponents Furman and Appalachian State, along with cross-county rival Charlotte, also attended the round-robin team-tournament.
All eight players who participated for the Wildcats scored at least one singles win over the weekend.
Gee, who last weekend reached the round of 16 in singles play at the Georgia Tech Invitational, dropped his first singles match against Furman in a tie-breaker, but came back to score wins in his next two matches against Charlotte and Appalachian State. Playing against the 49ers to start the day on Saturday, Gee earned a hard-fought 1-6, 6-0, 8-4 win, and then finished his afternoon off with a straight set, 6-4, 6-2, triumph over Britton Webb of ASU.
In doubles play, Gee teamed up with junior Eric Noble (Fayetteville, N.C.) to go 2-1 on the weekend. After dropping their first match on Friday, the duo came back with two 8-6 wins over doubles teams from Charlotte and Appalachian State.
Noble added a singles win to his resume over the weekend with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Brad Clinard of Charlotte, one of only two singles wins Davidson got against Charlotte.
Braxton, looking to move into the starting lineup this spring, had a nice two-day weekend in singles play by taking a 6-1, 6-4 win over Watson George of Furman on Friday, before closing out his weekend with a 10-8 tie-breaker win against Russ Ferrari of Appalachian State after both players split their first two sets, 6-1, 3-6.
All-Southern Conference second team member Scott Myers (West Palm Beach, Fla.) went 2-2 in singles and doubles action with both wins coming against Charlotte.
Despite going 1-2 in singles play, junior Tareq Alani (Chapel Hill, N.C.) battled to the end in each of his singles matches, forcing tie-breakers in all three of them. His hard work paid off as he finished out the invitational with a 6-3, 3-6, 10-8 triumph over the Mountaineers Eddie Elliott.
Also scoring wins in singles play over the weekend was senior Brandon Byrd (Raleigh, N.C.), and the sophomore tandem of Walker Lyons (Wallingford, Pa.) and Arie Hefter (Birmingham, Ala.). Lyons and Hefter each added another win during doubles play as well.
Davidson will conclude its fall portion of the 2008-09 schedule by heading to Chapel Hill, N.C., for the ITA Regional Championships, Oct. 16-19.
Furman concludes Davidson Invitational
DAVIDSON, N.C. - Furman men's tennis players combined for eight singles wins and five doubles wins over the first two days of the Davidson Tennis Invitational.
In singles action, Andrei Chvetsov earned a win over Noble (Davidson) by scores of 2-6, 6-3, 10-3. Ethan Asher picked up a victory over Gee (Davidson) 6-3, 2-6, 10-8.
Robert Bruner earned two singles wins, with victories over Alani (Davidson), 6-4, 4-6, 10-8 and Ferrari (App. State), 1-6, 6-0, 10-7. Philipp Fuelkell also picked up two singles wins, with one over Floyd of App. State, by scores of 7-6, 7-5, and another over Andres of UNC Charlotte, 6-3, 3-6, 10-5. Freshman Watson George also earned two singles wins, with victories over Webb of Appalachian State (6-2, 6-4) and Clinard of Charlotte (6-4, 6-7, 10-8).
In doubles action, Ethan Asher went undefeated, teaming with Watson George in the first match to defeat Braxton/Byrd of Davidson, 8-5, then pairing with Luis Soto to top Webb/Bianco of Appalachian State, 8-4, and joining with George to defeat Davison/LeCamp (Charlotte), 8-5. The Paladin tandems of Fuelkell and Bruner and Chvetsov and Soto earned the other two Furman wins, over Anders/Hutchinson (8-7) and Cuellar/Hugh (8-1).
Furman concludes Navy Gold Invitational
Day 1
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Three men's tennis players finished the Navy Gold Invitational by picking up flight championships on Sunday.
With a 6-4, 6-1 win over Mehdi Benhammou of Radford, senior Bo Ladyman clinched the flight two title.
In flight five, Furman's Jordan Walters defeated Paul Boslet of Radford, 6-2, 6-2 to claim the flight championship. Sophomore Sawyer Duncan was victorious in flight six with a win over Eddie Konrad by scores of 6-2, 7-6 (9-7).
Day 2
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Four Paladins remain undefeated in both singles and doubles play after day two of the Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Md.
In doubles action on Friday, the Paladin pair of Andy Juc and Chris Motes topped Gross/Samuelson (Georgetown) 8-6, while in flight two, Bo Ladyman and Jordan Walters defeated Bruhn/Tomczyk (Georgetown) 8-5, and Daniel Knause and Chris Rhyne earned an 8-1 win over Tillem/Wong (Georgetown) in flight three.
Friday's singles action saw six Paladins earn wins. In flight one, Juc defeated Samuelson in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1. In flight two, Ladyman topped Tillem 7-6(5), 6-2, while Knause was victorious over Tomczyk in flight three, 6-2, 6-2. In flight four, Motes topped Bruhn, 6-2, 6-2 and in flight five Walters defeated Gross 6-1, 6-1. Sophomore Sawyer Duncan earned the Paladins' sixth singles win with a 7-6(4), 6-2 victory over Wong in flight six.
On day two, the Paladin tandems of Juc/Motes and Ladyman/Walters continued their winning ways with wins over Nelms/Waters (8-5) and Bullard/Lemaich (8-6), respectively. Knause/Rhyne fell to Birger/Hill of Navy by a score of 8-6.
In singles action on Saturday, seven Furman players earned individual victories, highlighted by Daniel Knause's 6-0, 6-2 win over Waters (Navy) in singles three. Juc, Ladyman, Motes, Walters, Duncan and Rhyne alos earned singles wins.
Georgia Southern concludes UNF Invitational
JACKSONVILLE, Fla. ? The Georgia Southern Men’s Tennis Team concluded the UNF Invitational Sunday at the UNF Tennis Courts.
Joris De Weerdt (Morsel, Belgium) and Matthew Sands (Nassau, Bahamas) won the A draw of doubles due to a withdrawal.
Alonso Rodriguez (Lima, Peru) lost in the semifinals to K.C. Griffin 6-2, 6-4.
The Eagles return to action Thursday, October the 16th, at the ITA Southeast Regional in Lexington, Ky.
