GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Freshman Jessica Smith tallied six saves and recorded her fourth shutout of the season to lead Furman to a 2-0 victory over Chattanooga in Southern Conference women’s soccer action Sunday afternoon at Stone Soccer Stadium.
The win snapped a two-match skid for Furman and improved the Paladins to 9-5-1 overall and 3-3 in the SoCon. Chattanooga fell to 4-10-1 overall and 1-5 in the league.
Smith upped her record to 7-2-1 in net with the help of a diving stop in the first half and leaping effort to tip Chelsea Hurst’s free kick over the cross bar after intermission.
Rachel Fry provided all the offense the Paladins would need in the sixth minute with her fifth goal of the season. Sara El-Shami, who increased her SoCon leading assist total to eight, led Fry streaking into the center of the box and the senior slid her shot inside the left post at 5:29 to give Furman a 1-0 lead.
The pair connected again in the 50th minute. Fry lined a shot towards the left post and El-Shami tapped in the rebound to net her second goal of the season and provide the final 2-0 margin.
Furman outshot the Lady Mocs 25-8, including a 12-6 edge in shots on goal, while holding an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Goalkeeper Allie Preston kept the Lady Mocs within striking distance most of the afternoon with several diving saves to clear her line. The freshman finished with 10 saves in the defeat.
Chattanooga returns home to host The Citadel on Friday at 7 p.m. Furman will entertain Elon at 7 p.m. on Friday before welcoming rival UNC Greensboro to Stone Stadium next Sunday.
UNC Greensboro 2, Appalachian State 0
BOONE, N.C.- Appalachian State University women's soccer fell to SoCon foe UNC Greensboro Sunday afternoon, in the second part of a double-header as the Mountaineers lost 2-0. With the loss, Appalachian drops to 5-6-2 on the season and 1-4-1 in the SoCon, while Greensboro remains undefeated in conference play and improves to 10-4-1 on the season and 5-0-1 in the SoCon.
ASU got off to a solid start in the first half, as Caroline Lowe was able to get the offense going early, taking an early shot just four minutes in, testing UNCG's goal keeper. Casey Cleary was also an offensive force for the Apps, as she had a chance to finish off of Lowe's corner kick, heading the ball into the lower right corner of the net, but a Spartan defender was there to clear it.
UNCG was able to start their offensive attack in the 31st minute of play, as Katelyn Donovan beat an ASU defender and hit the ball into the lower right corner of the net past Caroline Clarke to give the Spartans the 1-0 advantage.
Appalachian tried to respond, as Amy Zahirski hit a cross to Jordan Horvath, but Horvath was unable to finish.
The Spartans got on the board once more before the half, as Heather Mitrisin converted a cross from Lauren Lopez into a goal, as she headed the ball into the left side of the net.
Greensboro took the 2-0 lead into the break.
The second half was evenly played between both squads as both teams has opportunities to score. For the Black and Gold, the offensive front was unable to come up with a goal off of two of Lowe's corner kicks. Cleary also proved to be an offensive threat, as she launched two strong shots, with one hitting the top of the cross bar and the other forcing UNCG goalkeeper Kesley Kearney to make a great save.
Despite the chances, the Mountaineers were never able to match UNCG's two goals and fell 2-0.
Cleary led the way for the Appalachian offense as she had seven shots with two on target, while Jamie Etten and Donovan each had three shots and two on target for the Spartans, and Donovan tallied one goal. Appalachian outshot the Spartans 12-10, while Greensboro earned eight corners compared to ASU's five.
Clarke played all 90 minutes in goal for the Apps, making six saves, while Kearney also played the entire match recording five saves.
Western Carolina 2, Elon 1 (OT)
CULLOWHEE, N.C. - The Western Carolina women's soccer team used a game-winning goal from junior Bri Cunningham to beat the Elon Phoenix 2-1, in overtime, on Sunday afternoon. The Catamounts improves to 8-6 overall and 5-1 in the Southern Conference after the win while Elon drops to 6-5-2 and 2-3-1 in the SoCon after the loss.
The Catamounts only needed three minutes and 48 seconds overtime to provide the game-winning goal thanks Cunningham, who beat the Elon Phoenix goalie Sydney Little for the 2-1 win. Cunningham took a pass from teammate Nikki Collins and beat the keeper Little one-on-one at the lower corner of the net for her second goal of the season.
The victory for Western Carolina is it's sixth win in the last seven games and also continues a four game home winning streak, dating back to their 1-0 victory over #20 South Carolina on Sept. 21.
In the first half Western Carolina came out attacking from the start with a lot of great opportunities early on - two minutes into the contest senior forward Buki Baruwa had a shot but it just went high. One minute later freshman Kayla Beauduy had an opportunity on goal but Elon goalie Little came up with the save.
Ten minutes into the game the Catamounts struck first when Beauduy put a cross into the box and junior Rachael Shomper put a header onto the back on the net just over the head of the Elon goalie Little to make it 1-0 Catamounts. It was Shomper's first goal of the season.
At the end of the first half Western Carolina out shot the Elon Phoenix 5-to-1 and two shots on goal to zero for Elon.
The Elon Phoenix came out attacking in the second half when ten minutes into the half, Susannah Gianakos scored off a rebound from teammate Molly Calpin to even the score at 1-1. Gianakos took a shot inside the box and beat the Catamounts goalie Caitlin Williams in the right corner for her fourth goal of the season.
The Catamounts came out attacking in the overtime scoring two goals at home for the first time this season. Western Carolina also finished the contest with an 11-to-5 shot advantage for the match.
Davidson 7, The Citadel 0
DAVIDSON, N.C. - The junior trio of Kyri Bye-Nagel, Blakely Low and Suzanne Sittko each scored twice on the afternoon in leading the Davidson women's soccer team to a season-high seven goals in a 7-0 shutout win over The Citadel on a sunny afternoon at Alumni Stadium in Southern Conference action.
The trio, along with senior Tiffany Mumby, who also found the back of the net, helped the Wildcats get back on the winning track, improving to 7-3-3 overall and 5-1-0 in SoCon play. The Wildcats also remained perfect in the all-time series against the Bulldogs at 8-0-0.
The Bulldogs fell to 3-9-1 overall and 1-5-0 in league action. They were coming off a 2-1 win over Georgia Southern on Friday for their first league win in program history.
The two-goal game for Bye-Nagel was her second in the past three contests, while Low and Sittko picked up their second career multi-goal games. Bye-Nagel, who earlier this week was named the SoCon Player of the Week, also moved into second place in the league with her eight goals.
Davidson dominated from the start, getting off eight shots in the first 12 minutes of the game. Sittko pushed across the Wildcats first score, and netted her first goal of the season, in the 19th minute off a corner kick from senior Melanee Smith. Smith serviced the ball into the 18-yard box, where it was then redirected by senior Chloe King with her head to a wide-open Sittko on the near side for the first goal.
Sittko also closed out the closing on the day with a sharp header to the near post off a free kick taken by sophomore Allison Drutchas (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.). The assist for Drutchas was her third of the year, which is second-best on the team.
Bye-Nagel and Mumby each scored the next two Wildcat goals, netting them in the 24th and 40th minute to close out the first half scoring. Senior Tracy McCausland registered her second assist on year on Bye-Nagel's goal when she sent a cross into the box after working the ball down to the endline on the near side.
A rebound shot off The Citadel's goalkeeper, Whitney Nave, allowed Mumby to score her second goal of the season as she knocked in her shot to the far post.
At the start of the second half, Low pushed the Davidson advantage out to four when she slipped a shot through the hands of the Bulldog goalkeeper at the 46:13 mark for her second goal of the season.
Nave and Laura Serafino both played between the pipes for the Bulldogs, combining for seven saves.
Davidson fired off a season-best 28 shots with half of them being placed on goal, and picked up six corner kicks.
Georgia Southern 1, College of Charleston 1
STATESBORO, Ga. - The College of Charleston women's soccer team and Georgia Southern battled to a 1-1, double overtime draw on Sunday afternoon in Statesboro, Ga.
With the draw, the Cougars move to 9-3-3 on the year, 2-2-2 in the SoCon, while Georgia Southern goes to 4-6-3 overall, 2-3-1 in the SoCon.
In the first half, Georgia Southern got on the scoreboard in the 32nd minute when Ashley Toussaint scored her 10th goal of the season. Abby Wheeler and Chelsea Kephart were credited with assists on the play.
In the second half, the Cougars knotted the game up at one in the 52nd minute when Megan Manthey scored her eighth goal of the year and second in as many games. Katie Browne was credited with an assist on the score.
Statistically, the Cougars dominated the second half, as they out shot Georgia Southern 14-3 in the period. The team, however, failed to score again after the Manthey tally and the game proceeded to go to overtime.
In the overtime periods, Charleston once again held an edge in shots (4-1), but could not cash in on any of their attempts and the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
The Cougars outshot Georgia Southern in the match 25-9 and held a 12-3 edge in corner kicks. Goalie Erin Smith kept Georgia Southern off the scoreboard after giving up the first period goal and made a total of four saves on the day.
Wofford 0, Samford 0
SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Wofford sophomore Katie McChesney held off the Samford offense as neither team could find the back of the net in a 0-0 double overtime tie in Southern Conference women's soccer action Sunday afternoon at Snyder Field in Spartanburg, S.C.
McChesney finished with nine saves on 11 Bulldog shots, including a point-blank stop on a Caroline Baxter shot from the left post with seven minutes in regulation. Baxter, along with teammates Amber Cress and Shannon Healy, each had two shots on goal as Samford (4-8-2, 3-1-2 SoCon) controlled much of the offensive possession.
The Bulldogs managed a 15-5 edge in corner kicks, building a 5-0 lead in the category through the first half.
The host Terriers, however, stood firm on the defensive end in front of their goalkeeper and kept Samford from scoring. Wofford (2-7-5, 1-3-2 SoCon) played in its seventh overtime affair of the season and sixth of which went into the second extra period. The seven overtime matches are a single-season program record.
Four shots, including one each from juniors Monica Ploetzke and Blair Green and freshmen Maggie McLaughlin and Sydney Reed, were all the Terriers could attempt at the Bulldog cage and goalie Alyssa Whitehead. Whitehead collected one save in the 110 minutes of action, coming on Green's header.
In the three meetings in the series between the two schools, two have resulted in 0-0 ties and both were played at Snyder Field.
