Elon 1, College of Charleston 0
ELON, N.C. -- Justin Wyatt's team-leading seventh goal of the season proved to be enough as the Elon Phoenix men's soccer team won its third straight game with a 1-0 decision over the visiting College of Charleston Cougars from Rudd Field on Saturday night. The Phoenix, who defeated CofC for the first time in nine tries, improved to 5-7-1 overall and stayed perfect in SoCon play at 4-0-0. The Cougars dropped to 7-5-0, 1-2-0.
The Phoenix struck early as Wyatt's tally came just 39 seconds into the game. Steven Kinney got the play started by sending a ball deep to Erfan Imeni near the left side of the goal box. Imeni one-touched a pass across the box to Wyatt who scored to the bottom right side of the frame.
Wyatt's score was the 20th of his career, making him just the 10th Elon player to ever score 20 or more career goals. His 20 rank him 10th.
Elon had numerous opportunities to add to its advantage, but came up just short on multiple occasions as shots either missed high or were saved by Clark Hankins.
Kyle Boerner recorded the shutout for the Phoenix, the first of the season for him, and needed to make just one save in the contest.
Hankins finished the evening with three saves for the Cougars.
The Cougars had to play the final 1:37 short two players after red cards were issued.
Up next for the Phoenix is a date at Davidson on Oct. 15. That match will begin at 7 p.m. College of Charleston will host Georgia Southern at 7 p.m. on Oct. 14.
UNC Greensboro 2, High Point 0
GREENSBORO, N.C. ? Nirav Kadam and Tim Masters scored goals early in the second half as UNC Greensboro topped High Point, 2-0, in men’s soccer action Saturday night at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
The Spartans won consecutive matches for the first time this season and raised their record to 5-7-1 on the year with the win. High Point, which has non-conference wins over SoCon members Elon, Davidson and Appalachian State this season, dropped to 5-5-1.
After a scoreless first half, Kadam broke the tie at 57:10. A header attempt by a Panther defender went astray and Kadam collected it inside the box. The sophomore from Germantown, MD, poked the ball into the goal from 10 yards out just inside the right post for his second goal of the season.
Just 3:15 later, the Spartans got an insurance tally from Masters. Matt Foxx took a shot that deflected off goalkeeper Michael Chesler out away from the goal. Masters, who has missed the last four matches due to injury, gathered the rebound and only had to blast it past a defender near the goal line for his third goal of the season.
Nate Berry recorded six saves for the win, four of those in the second half. UNCG was outshot 15-11 by High Point and the Panthers recorded nine consecutive shots at one point after the Spartans got their two-goal lead.
