GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Jonathan Collier scored the game-winning goal in the 83rd minute to rally Furman past Davidson 2-1 and extend the Paladins’ winning streak to seven matches before a crowd of 1,906 Friday evening at Stone Soccer Stadium.
Furman, unbeaten in its last eight matches, improved to 8-4-1 overall and 3-0 in the Southern Conference. Davidson slipped to 2-9-1 overall and 1-2 inside the league.
Collier broke a 1-1 deadlock at the 82:36 mark when he settled a Patrick White throw in and hammered a shot past Wildcat goalkeeper Robby Goldsberry from the top of the six-yard box.
The Wildcats had grabbed an early 1-0 just 6:45 into the match when Greg Macnamara slid a ball through to Machel Turner who drilled an eight-yard effort past keeper Alec Kann for his third goal of the season.
Furman equalized shortly after intermission on freshman Coleton Henning’s Southern Conference leading seventh goal of the season. Warren Creavalle played a bending ball towards the top of the box on the far side from midfield and Henning laced a one-timer into the far-side netting at 49:27.
The Paladins held an 8-6 edge in shot attempts with both teams putting four shots on goal. Davidson took a 6-4 edge in corner kicks. Kann notched a pair of saves to improve to 5-1 in goal while Goldsberry stopped two shots for the Wildcats.
Davidson is back in action Wednesday when it hosts Elon at 7 p.m. Furman will entertain SoCon rival Appalachian on Wednesday at 7:00.
