Arlington, Texas - The Appalachian State wrestling team improved to 6-5 on the season with a 3-1 record at the Lone Star Duals. Appalachian opened the day with three consecutive wins over North Dakota State (26-16), Eastern Michigan (30-9) and Air Force (25-9) before falling to No. 7 ranked Michigan (25-9) in the night cap.
ASU opened 2008 against Summit League foe North Dakota State. After four bouts, Appalachian trailed 10-7 with senior Eddie Hutchinson stepping up to the mat. Hutchinson pinned NDSU’s Adam Aho in only 44 seconds to grab six big points giving ASU the 13-10 lead after the 157-pound match. Sophomore Brett Houghton added a pin at 174-pounds to extend the lead to 22-10. Freshman Austin Trotman added the final four points with a 13-4 majority decision at 184-pounds.
In the second match of the day, Appalachian faced Eastern Michigan. Sophomore Frank Celorrio opened the match with a 7-3 decision to give ASU the early 3-0 lead. Seniors Marcus Cox and Scott Ervin claimed majority decision and tech fall victories at 141-pounds and 149-pounds respectively. Cox captured the impressive 16-6 win while No. 14 ranked Ervin blanked Drew Lesko 16-0 to earn five team points.
Senior Tommy Hutchinson followed his brothers example and earned a pin in only 40 seconds over Justin Brandel. Houghton earned his second pin of the day over Don Funk in 1:40 to put ASU up to a 27-3 lead. Freshman Dylan Temple scratched out a 3-1 victory at 197-pounds to put ASU up to a 30-6 lead. Junior Jared Campbell dropped his bout at 285-pounds 0-3 to arive at the final outcome of 30-9.
Appalachian achieved their longest winning streak of the season when they downed Air Force 25-9. Celorrio and senior Terreyl Williams earned 9-3 and 7-5 decisions at 125 and 133-pounds to open up a 6-0 lead. Mountaineers Cox, Ervin and Eddie Hutchinson rolled on with consecutive victories to sprint out to a 16-0 lead. Tommy Hutchinson earned his second pin of the day to push the lead to 22-0. Freshman John Allen Griswold dropped a 1-3 decision to Sterling Tribble, part of Air Force’s 9-3 rally in the final four bouts.
In the final match of the day, Appalachian faced Michigan. Celorrio earned a pin on Jason Lara to give the Apps the 6-0 lead. The Wolverines rallied, scoring 12 points in three matches including a pin by No. 1 ranked Kellen Russel on Cox at 141 pounds. Eddie Hutchinson took a 4-2 decision over No. 20 Jeff Marsh to cut the Michigan lead to 12-9. Unfortunately it was as close as ASU would get, as the Mountaineers dropped the final five matches, surrendering 20 points to the seventh ranked Wolverines down the stretch.
Next up for the Mountaineers is the home opener against UNC Greensboro on January 13 at 2 p.m. The match, held at historic Varsity Gym, will be the conference opener for both squads.

VMI
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.- Freshman Curtis Moore placed third at 184 pounds to lead VMI to a fifth-place showing at the Virginia Intercollegiates, held at the John Paul Jones Arena and hosted by the University of Virginia.
Moore (Stafford, Va./Gar-Field) won three of his four matches on the day, shutting out George Mason’s Jimmy Webb 4-0 before dropping an 8-0 major decision to Liberty’s Chris Daggett. Moore then bounced back in the consolation bracket to claim a 5-0 win against Apprentice’s Charles Robinson before taking out Webb once again, this time by a 2-1 margin.
Redshirt senior David Metzler (Dayton, Va./Turner Ashby) won a pair of matches in the consolation bracket at 141 lbs. after dropping a 6-2 decision to Virginia’s Nick Nelson in the championship bracket. Metzler pinned ODU’s Justin Belanger in 5:16 , then pinned Liberty’s Colin Lewis at the 3:56 mark. However, he fell one match short of the third-place match with a 4-3 loss to Virginia’s Kellon Balum.
Meanwhile, freshman Ryan Goodsell (Rhoadesville, Va./Orange County) pinned Apprentice’s Jeff Jiron in 3:37 on his way to a fourth-place finish in the 133-pound bracket.
Old Dominion edged out Virginia to claim the team title, posting 107 points compared to Virginia’s total of 101. The Monarchs claimed six individual champions, including James Nicholson who was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler after posting a pair of technical falls at 125 lbs.
The Keydets return to action on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m., participating in a tri-meet against George Mason and Campbell in Fairfax, hosted by GMU.
UNCG 35, The Citadel 3
GREENSBORO, NC ? The UNC Greensboro Spartan wrestling team opened up the 2007-08 Southern Conference season with a 35-3 victory over the Bulldogs of The Citadel, Sunday at Fleming Gymnasium. The Spartans walked away with nine victories out of 10.
The Spartans opened up their first conference dual of the season with a win at the 157-pound weight class. Senior Mark Ring blanked The Citadel’s Keith Koziel with 8-0 decision. With the win, the Glassboro, NJ native is now 4-7 overall, 1-0 SoCon.
Sophomore Byron Sigmon collected his third fall of the season at 165 lbs. Sigmon, from Claremont, NC, pinned the Bulldogs’ Brenden Prince in 2:20. He improved to an even 8-8 overall record, 1-0 in the SoCon.
First-year Mikal McKee tacked on his ninth win of the season with a 15-6 major decision victory over The Citadel’s 174-pound Derek Sickel. A native of Asheville, NC, McKee was the youngest Spartan wrestler to place at the 2007 UNCG Southern Scuffle held last weekend at the Greensboro Coliseum and Special Events Center. He moved to a 9-8 overall record, 1-0 SoCon.
The Spartans held a 14-0 team score advantage going into the day’s fourth match before The Citadel was able to put up three points of their own.
184-pound Darius Caldwell nabbed The Citadel’s first and only win of the dual with a 3-1 decision over UNCG’s Nick Clark. Clark, a senior from Cohocton, NY dropped to a 2-8 overall record, 0-1 in the conference.
UNCG’s only nationally ranked wrestler, senior Daren Burns blanked The Citadel in the197-pound match to put points back in the win column for the Spartans. Burns, a native of Catawba, NC won a 3-0 decision over John Buck and extended the home-gym lead to 17-3.
Currently ranked 11th at 197 lbs., Burns is now 21-3 on the season, 93-30 in his career. The win moved him even closer to surpassing UNCG’s all-time career win record of 98-25 set by Joe Stanton (1993-97).
A native of Winston-Salem, junior Ryan Hsu tabbed his 12th win of the season with a close, 4-3 victory over The Citadel’s Aaron Brown in the heavyweight bout.
At 125 lbs., Laurinburg, NC native, Mitchell Johnson defeated the Bulldog’s Tyler Sim with a 6-4 decision. Johnson is now 6-9 overall, 1-0 SoCon.
Jeff Hedges continued to show his determination and leadership on the mats as he won a fall victory in the 133-pound bout. The senior from Havre, MT pinned The Citadel’s Anthony Easter in one minute to improve to a 12-9 overall, 1-0 SoCon record.
Ben Wilmore (2-6, 1-0 SoCon) won the Spartan’s eighth match of the day in the 141-pound weight class. The senior from Fort Worth, TX held the Bulldog’s Michael Arias scoreless to win a 7-0 decision.
In the final match of the day, UNCG’s 149-pound Marcus Hannah defeated The Citadel’s Derek Royster with an 8-6 decision. Hannah improved to 7-3 overall, 1-0 SoCon.
The Spartans are back in action next Sunday, January 13 as they travel to Boone, NC to take on the Appalachian State Mountaineers. Matches are set to begin at 2pm.

Chattanooga 16, Northern Iowa 21
DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. --- The University of Northern Iowa wrestling team took advantage of a pin and a Chattanooga forfeit to defeat the 10th-ranked Mocs, 21-16 Sunday. The dual match was held at Lithia Springs High School in Douglasville, Ga.
The Panthers, 1-2-1, recorded their first dual-match victory of the season while UTC, 5-2, fell for the second consecutive match.
Fourth-ranked Moza Fay secured the win for Northern Iowa with a pin of UTC’s Nick Davis in the 165-pound match, the second-to-last match of the day. Fay’s victory pushed UNI’s lead to 21-12 with one remaining. The Panthers also received six team points from a forfeit at 133 pounds. UTC starter Steve Hromada was unable to compete because of injuries suffered at last week’s Midlands Championships.
Fay and UTC’s Lloyd Rogers were the only two wrestlers to garner bonus points in their respective matches. In the final match, 13th-ranked Rogers scored a 17-6 major decision over 17th-ranked Alex Dolly at 174.
The teams traded wins in the opening four matches. UNI’s Andy O’Loughlin began the dual with an 8-5 win over Josh Edmondson at 184 pounds. UTC’s Matt Koz bested Andrew Anderson, 10-4 at 197 to even the score. Koz is ranked 13th nationally while Anderson is 16th.
Dustin Bauman shut out the Mocs’ Mat Lettner 2-0 at the heavyweight meeting, but eighth-ranked Javier Maldonado tied the score at 6-6 with a 125-pound victory over Caleb Flores, 11-8.
Following the forfeit at 133, UNI’s C.J. Ettelson shut out 16th-ranked Cody Cleveland, 6-0 at 141 to give the Panthers a 15-6 cushion. The Mocs put together back-to-back decisions at 149 and 157 to get within reach before Fay’s pin at 165.
Twentieth-ranked Joey Knox edged Charlie Ettelson, 4-2 at 149, and Seth Garvin, also ranked 20th, outpointed Tyson Reiner at 157, 12-6 to put the Mocs within three, 15-12.
UTC defeated the Panthers 23-15 last season in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and the two teams could meet again this coming weekend as UNI hosts the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals on Saturday and Sunday.
