FAIRFAX, Va. ? Senior Brenna Burns finished first in the 3,000 meters, highlighting the Wildcat women’s appearance at the Patriot Games on the campus of George Mason Saturday afternoon.
Burns bested the strong field, which included Navy, Richmond and American, with a conference-leading time of 9:55.72, while junior Caroline Sanker finished third in the event with a time of 10:12.68. "Brenna was great today!" head coach Jen Straub said. "She turned in a great time at this time in the season, and Caroline was right behind her! I am very proud of the way the entire team competed today!"
Turning in another solid distance performance, senior Megal Atias finished fifth in the mile with a time of 5:19.48.
Senior Amaka Obidegwu also turned in a top-10 finish for the Wildcat women, finishing ninth in the 400 meters with a time of 1:01.87. Obidegwu also had the team’s top time in the 200 meters with a time of 27.53 (19th).
The Wildcats will return to action next weekend, when they travel to the University of North Carolina for the Carolina Classic on Fri., Feb.
Clemson Classic

Clemson, S.C.- Five Mountaineers traveled to South Carolina to take part in the Clemson Multi-Event Meet this past weekend. The meet, which only had the heptathlon and pentathlon as events, went quite well for the Apps, as they posted impressive performances.
As for the women, freshman Kiara Crutchfield led the way, grabbing the runner-up spot in the pentathlon, with 2919 points, moving her into fifth on Appalachian’s top-ten all-time list. Three other Mountaineers didn’t finish too far behind Crutchfield, as Melanie Frye placed fourth with 2545 points, placing her seventh on the all-time list , Julie Ward came in sixth with 2536 points, putting her into the eighth spot on Appalachian’s all-time list and Meg Irwin grabbed seventh place with 1693 points.

Senior Tasha Sanders, the 2007 Southern Conference pentathlon runner-up, finished third in pentathlon.
Sanders scored 2,915 points in the five-event competition, a mere 181 points short of her own school record mark of 3,096 points. That record was set at the 2007 SoCon Indoor Championships where she finished second in the pentathlon.
Sophomore Lauren Fleming earned 1,745 points in the first pentathlon competition of her career, placing her fourth in the school’s all-time charts.

On the women’s side, freshman led the way with Michelle Chewens and Tiffany Garber recording the top finishes of the day. Chewens took fourth place in the 1000m run with a time of 3:09.35 while Garber finished in 11th place in the mile with a time of 5:29.98.
UNCG also had several runners hit new personal records. Carly Magin, who took 18th place in the 3000m, also set a new personal record of 11:31.44, breaking her old mark by over 13 seconds.
The Spartans are back in action next weekend when they head to Chapel Hill, NC for the Carolina Invitational hosted by North Carolina.
