RALEIGH, N.C. Playing in their second straight match in as many days, the Davidson women's tennis team suffered their first loss of the season when the Wildcats dropped a 7-0 road decision to No. 40 N.C. State on Friday evening at the Andy Andrews Indoor Tennis Stadium.
Davidson, who last played the Wolfpack in 2005, fell to 1-1 on the year.
N.C. State improved to 2-0, earning its second straight win over a Southern Conference opponent after defeating Elon last Sunday, Jan. 20 to open the season.
The Wildcats were only able to capture one of the three doubles matches as they fell behind by an early score of 1-0. Scoring the lone doubles win, and the only win on the evening in doubles or singles, was freshman Alison Rauh (Trier, Germany) and senior Kim Whelan (Sewickley, Pa.) with an 8-6 victory over Berkeley Brock and Neils Barringer. It was the duos second straight win at the No. 3 doubles spot.
Junior Michele Fanney (Virginia Beach, Va.) was the closest Wildcat to earning a win in singles play as she battled Julia Roach in a straight set defeat. Fanney dropped the first set, 6-3, before nearly taking the second set when Roach earned a 7-6 tie-breaker win.
Sophomore Virginia Berry (Spartanburg, S.C.) and senior Kelsey Linville (Columbus, Ohio) each faced their first ranked opponents of the season at No. 1 and 2 singles play. Berry was only able to take four games from No. 97 Berkeley Brock in a 6-1, 6-3 defeat.
Linville pushed No. 79 Daria Petrovic to a tie-breaker in the first set of her match, before falling 7-6. She was then swept 6-0 in the second set, dropping her to 0-2 on the season.
The Wildcats finish up their three straight matches to open the season with a home match against Gardner-Webb on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Knobloch Tennis Center.

DAVIDSON, N.C. The Davidson women's tennis team, playing its third straight match in as many days to open the season, closed out the three-match affair with a 7-0 blanking of visiting Gardner-Webb on Saturday afternoon at the Knobloch Tennis Center on the campus of Davidson College.
Davidson ran its overall mark to 2-1 on the year, while GWU dropped its season opener to fall to 0-1. The Wildcats have won the last five straight meetings by the score of 7-0.
The 'Cats earned a clean swept at all three doubles matches and then took all six singles matches, with five of them going just two sets.
Seeing their first action at No. 1 doubles was freshman Alison Rauh (Trier,
Germany) and senior Kim Whelan (Sewickley, Pa.), who ran off an 8-4 win for the duos third straight win of the season.
Earning their first doubles victory together as a team was senior Meredith Skeeters (Greensboro, N.C.) and Lora Dushanova (Silven, Bulgaria) at the No.3 spot where they scored an 8-2 win.
The duo then each earned their first wins in singles play this year.
Skeeters took a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 6 singles, while Dushanova secured a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 5. Just a year ago, Dushanova ratted off a 15-4 singles mark, including a 9-2 record at No. 6 singles.
Junior Michele Fanney (Virginia Beach, Va.), who played twice at No. 1 singles last season, scored her first win of the 2008 campaign with a two-set sweep (6-4, 6-2) over Laura Kriett at the No. 1 singles spot.
Rounding out the Wildcat lineup was Whelan, Rauh and sophomore Teresa Wang (Charlotte, N.C.), who each registered their second singles wins of the season. Wang's battle with Monica Walser was the lone match to go into three sets, with Wang prevailing by the count of 6-7, 6-4, 10-7.
The Wildcats take a five-day break before gearing up for another home match, this time against USC Upstate on Thursday, Jan. 31 at 3 p.m.

Furman started the match by winning the doubles point, with all three pairs winning tough matches. Gioia/Manojlovic defeated Kozmina/Malina 9-8
(5) in the number one spot, Osborne/Swindall topped Powell/Gresova 8-6 in number two doubles, and Arguello/Tomorry won over Nitkova/Strickland 8-6 in the third spot.
The Lady Paladins won all their singles matches as well, with junior Laura Gioia leading the way in number one singles, defeating Martina Nitkoa 6-4, 6-3.
Furman continues play Saturday with a match against #60 Virginia Tech.

GREENVILLE, S.C. ? The Furman Lady Paladins fell to 1-1 on the season with a narrow 4-3 loss to #60 Virginia Tech Saturday evening.
Virginia Tech won two of the three doubles matches for the first point of the day, then split the six singles contests for the victory.
Earning wins for the Lady Paladins were junior Laura Gioia, sophomore Jessica Preeg, and senior Lauren Tomory. Gioia defeated Yasmin Hamza by a comfortable 6-2, 6-2 margin in number one singles. Preeg topped Jessica Brouwer in a close 7-5, 7-6 (5) match in the number four spot, and Tomory won over Holly Johnson 6-2, 6-0.
With the loss, the Lady Paladins fell to 1-1 on the season, and will continue play Tuesday with a match against in-state rival Clemson. The match will be played at Furman with a 3:00 p.m. start time.

ELON, N.C. ? Elon captured all 18 of its matches Saturday at the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center, sweeping its way through its home-opening doubleheader with Winston-Salem State and North Carolina Central in non-conference women’s tennis action.
The Phoenix (2-2) earned a 7-0 victory over Winston-Salem State (0-1) in the morning before posting a 7-0 triumph over North Carolina Central (0-1) in the afternoon.
In doubles action against the Rams, Jenn Tucci and Hayley Wahl defeated Johanna Nunez and Terese Lavan 8-0 at No. 1, Anna Milian and Whitney Butcher beat Gabrielle Benjamin and Laken Joyce 8-0 at No. 2 and Laura Graybill and Jessica Margolis blanked Jessica Smith and Jade Heggins 8-0 at No. 3.
Tucci claimed the first singles victory of the day, turning back Lavan 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2. Following Butcher’s 6-0, 6-0 win over Heggins at No. 5, Margolis dispatched Smith 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 to clinch the match for Elon. Graybill (over Benjamin 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3), Milian (over Nunez 6-1, 6-2 at No. 1) and Wahl (over Joyce 6-1, 6-2 at No. 4) determined the final margin.
In doubles play against the Eagles, Tucci and Wahl (over Ambra Mason and Antoinette Spain 8-0 at No. 2), Milian and Deanna Bailey (over Ashley Rogers and Tati Velasquez 8-0 at No. 1) and Butcher and Graybill (over Stephanie Lee and Comesha Hickman 8-2 at No. 3) all emerged victorious.
On the singles scene, Butcher ousted Spain 6-0, 6-0 to pick up the first win at No. 5. Mt. Pleasant, S.C. -- The College of Charleston women’s tennis team opened its 2008 season with 7-0 wins over Coastal Carolina and Presbyterian at the Patriots Point Tennis Center this afternoon.
Senior Chelsea Albertz led the Cougars in number one singles to a 2-0 start for the season. The Lady Chanticleers and the Blue Hose both fall to 0-1
Albertz, a senior from Tequesta, Fla., finished 6-3, 1-6 and 6-4 over Coastal’s Lexi Bolesky 6-0 and 6-2 over Brittany Lanford of PC. Link Leskosky finished 7-5 in two sets over Coastal’s Amy Pazahanick in number two singles. Sophomore Laura Borza defeated Kim Webb in three sets 2-6, 7-5 and 1-0. Captain Amanda Becker and Anna Lee Evans won their matches 6-1, 6-1 and 6-3, 6-4 respectively against the Chants.
In doubles action versus CCU, Bolesky and Pazahanic defeated Leskosky and Borza 8-6. Holly Dowse and Keely Mulligan finished 8-3 over Maria Cambero and Tina Petkova, while Albertz and Kinsey Casey defeated Sofie Ahlberg and Webb 9-7.
In the day’s second match against the Blue Hose, Borza finished 6-1 and 6-0 over Abby Diminich in number two singles. Becker, Mulligan and Casey finished 6-1 and 6-0, 6-3 and 6-2 and 6-0, 6-3 respectively. Freshman Julia Howard defeated Casey Bookout 6-1 and 6-0.
The doubles teams of Dowse/Mulligan, Kinsey/Casey and Emily Dyar and Sarah Schwarz defeated the Blue Hose 8-5, 8-1 and 8-4.
The Cougars continue the season on the road as they travel to Columbia, S.C., to take on South Carolina Wed., Jan. 30, at 5:00 p.m.
