Davidson 0, NC State 7 (Men)
DAVIDSON, N.C. The Davidson men's tennis team opened its 2008 season on the road at N.C. State and suffered a 7-0 setback on Saturday afternoon in Raleigh, N.C. Davidson falls to 0-1, while the Wolfpack earned their second win of the day in the second match of a triple-header.
The Wildcats tandem of senior Flaviu Simihaian (Nasaud, Romania) and junior Ethan Jaffee (Indianapolis, Ind.) scored the only win on the day in either singles or doubles as they earned an 8-6 triumph at No. 1 doubles.
Sophomore Tareq Alani (Chapel Hill, N.C.) was very close to scoring a singles win. In just his second collegiate singles match, Alani battled Daniel Schinke at No. 6 singles much of the afternoon before Schinke earned a 6-4, 6-3 match to close out the 7-0 win for the Wolfpack.
Seeing their first collegiate spring action was the talented freshmen duo of Walker Lyons (Wallingford, Pa.) and Arie Hefter (Birmingham, Ala.), who played at No. 3 and 5 singles. Lyons was shutout, 6-0, 6-0, while Hefter earned two game wins, dropping a 6-1, 6-1 decision to Frideric Prandecki.
Lyons also teamed up with junior Scott Myers (West Palm Beach, Fla.) at No.3 doubles where they came up short in an 8-4 match against the Wolfpack's Welter and Rozek.
Davidson will look to regroup when it opens its home slate of matches on Jan. 27 with a meeting against USC Upstate at 1 p.m. in Knobloch Tennis Center.

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga tennis teams each opened up the 2008 schedule with victories over Lipscomb Saturday. The women were 6-1 winners over the Lady Bison, while the men blanked the in-state foes from Nashville, 7-0.
The Lady Mocs swept all three doubles matches and won five of six singles duals.
First-year Head Coach Jeff Clark used three veterans at the top three spots in the lineup, while true freshmen made up the bottom three positions.
Seniors Lindsey Ballard and Bonnie Adams earned straight-set victories at the first and third positions respectively, while junior Beata Knizat, playing at No. 2, fell to Kara Jackson, 6-3, 6-2.
The three newcomers each won their debuts. Grace Robinette defeated Olivia Ellis, 6-2, 6-3 playing at no. 4, Annie Green got past Caitlin Khouri at No. 5, 6-1, 7-6 and Arianna Sanjines was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Marianna Rangel.
It was a clean sweep for the men’s squad with the exception of the third doubles match. The Mocs took two of three doubles matches to start off the dual, claiming the doubles point.
Head Coach Carlos Garcia only had to use two newcomers in his singles lineup. His veterans led the way with seniors Badr Bouabdellah and Razvan Axente picking up 6-4, 6-1 wins at the first and second positions, and juniors Peter Sauska and Pavel Vostrikov earning straight setters at No. 3 and 4 respectively.
True freshmen Hasan Hamadeh and Rick van de Bovenkamp were inserted at the fifth and sixth spots. Hamadeh pulled out a 4-6, 6-2, 10-2 win over Josh Cummings, and van de Bovenkamp won 7-6, 7-6 over Mario Hernandez.
The Mocs travel to Middle Tennessee next Saturday for a 5 p.m. match, while the Lady Mocs face Western Kentucky Feb. 2 in Bowling Green, Ky.

Georgia Southern, 3 Florida A&M 4 (Men)
TALLAHASSEE, FL. ? The Georgia Southern men’s tennis team opened dual action play Sunday morning in Tallahassee against the Florida A&M Rattlers. The Eagles fell in a tight 4-3 match to the Rattlers. Georgia Southern falls to 0-1, while Florida A&M opens dual play 1-0.
The Rattlers jumped off to a 1-0 start claiming the doubles point with victories at the two and three seeds. Senior Emmanuel Nkoueleue (Douala, Cameroon) and sophomore Borja Malet (Barcelona, Spain) were victorious at the one seed over Rattlers Maurice Wamukowa and Michael Moore, 8-4.
Singles action saw three victories by the Eagles at the one, five and six seeds, respectively. In route to a perfect day, Nkoueleue claimed his second victory of the day with a singles win at the one seed. Nkoueleue ousted Rattler Artiom Podgainii in straight 6-3 sets. At the five seed, junior Philip Prins, a native of Cape Town, South Africa, earned Georgia Southern’s second mark of the day with a three set triumph over Wamukowa. Prins captured the first set, 6-3, and the third set in a tiebreaking battle, 7-6 (10-8). Matthew Sands defeated Paul Paige at the six seed, also in three sets. Sands claimed the first and third sets, 7-5.
The Eagles return to Statesboro for their home opener Sunday, January 27. Georgia Southern will face off against North Florida. Match time is slated for a 1 pm start.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. ? Elon opened its 2008 spring women’s tennis season Friday evening at the Cone-Kenfield Indoor Tennis Center, falling 7-0 to No. 12 North Carolina.
To begin the match, the Tar Heels (2-0) earned doubles victories by Katrina Tsang and Laura Reichert (over Whitney Butcher and Paige Kensrue 8-0) at No. 2, Alexandra Jurewitz and Meg Fanjoy (over Anna Milian and Hayley Wahl 8-1) at No. 3 and No. 8 Sanaz Marand and Sophie Grabinski (over Deanna Bailey and Jenn Tucci 8-0) at No. 1.
In singles play, No. 14 Marand beat Bailey 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1, Linzee Mabrey defeated Wahl 6-0, 6-1 at No. 6 and Jelena Durisic decisioned Kensrue 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2 to clinch the match for North Carolina. The Tar Heels capped the victory with wins by Grabinski (6-2, 6-2 over Tucci at No. 4), Fanjoy (6-0, 6-4 over Milian at No. 3) and Jurewitz (6-2, 6-3 over Graybill at No. 5).
RALEIGH, N.C. ? Elon wrapped up its opening weekend of its 2008 spring women’s tennis season Sunday afternoon at the Andy Andrews Indoor Tennis Stadium, falling 7-0 to No. 40 NC State.
In doubles action, Neils Barringer and Catherine Grotz defeated Anna Milian and Hayley Wahl 8-2 at No. 3, Julia Roach and Lenka Hojckova staved off Whitney Butcher and Paige Kensrue 8-4 at No. 2 and Berkeley Brock and Daria Petrovic overcame Deanna Bailey and Jen Tucci 8-6 at No. 1 to give the Wolfpack (1-0) the doubles point.
NC State also swept its way through the singles matches as No. 97 Brock (6-1, retired over Bailey at No. 1), Barringer (6-0, 6-2 over Laura Graybill at No. 4), Roach (6-1, 7-5 over Milian at No. 3), Hojckova (6-3, 6-4 over Kensrue at No. 2), Kristen Bleakley (6-3, 6-1 over Wahl at No. 5) and Grotz (6-0, 6-2 over Jessica Margolis at No. 6) all emerged victorious.
The Wolfpack marked Elon’s second top-40 opponent in three days to open its spring schedule as the Phoenix (0-2) lost at No. 12 North Carolina 7-0 Friday night. The Phoenix will open its home schedule when Winston-Salem State (10 a.m.) and NC Central (3 p.m.) visit the Jimmy Powell Tennis Center Saturday.
UNC Greensboro 0, Clemson 7 (Men)
CLEMSON, SC ? Clemson won five of six singles matches in straight sets on its way to a 7-0 win over UNC Greensboro on Sunday afternoon.
After the Tigers won the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead, UNCG got off to a good start in singles’ action when junior Andrey Bubnov won the first set over Ike Belk, 6-4. But Belk won the next two sets and the Tigers won the remaining five singles matches in straight sets to earn their first win on the season.
The Spartans (0-2) return to action next Friday when they visit Old Dominion for a 7 pm match.

RALEIGH, NC ? No. 20 North Carolina State won all six singles matches and three doubles pro-sets on its way to a 7-0 win over UNC Greensboro in men’s tennis action Saturday night.
The Spartans dropped their spring season opener against the 20th-ranked team, but not without a fight. Taylor Befus won the first set at No. 5 singles, topping Frideric Prandecki 7-6, 7-5 in the tiebreaker. However, Prandecki won the second set 6-2 and then won a 10-point tiebreaker, 10-7.
Andrey Bubnov and Arsel Kumdereli also had an impressive spring debut. They lost in a tiebreaker in their doubles pro-set at No. 1, falling 8-7 with a 10-5 score in the tiebreaker.
UNCG will face Clemson on Sunday at 12 noon.

CHAPEL HILL, NC ? UNC Greensboro’s women’s tennis team opened the second half of its 2007-08 schedule with a 7-0 loss at No. 12 ranked North Carolina on Friday night.
North Carolina swept through all six singles matches and all three doubles pro-sets to earn its first win of the spring season. UNCG held tough during the doubles, falling 8-3 and 8-4 during the doubles pro-sets at Nos. 2 and 3. Alejandra Guerra gave Katrina Tsang a tough first set in singles action, dropping the first set, 6-4.
However, the 12th-ranked Tar Heels took over from there to cruise to the shutout win.
UNCG returns to action in two weeks when it faces Michigan State on February 2. The match gets underway at 1 pm.
