GREENSBORO, NC ? On Sunday afternoon, the UNC Greensboro wrestling squad won its third Southern Conference dual and its fifth match overall as they defeated the Davidson Wildcats, 30-9, in the day’s first dual of the session. Later that afternoon, the Spartans were handed their fifth loss of the season as the Virginia Cavaliers came from behind to win, 24-18.
The afternoon began in favor of the Wildcats as Ben Altman (17-8, 1-0 SoCon) defeated sophomore Mitchell Johnson (7-11, 2-2) with a 3:32 fall victory in the 125-pound weight class. The Spartans were quickly able to take the lead as senior Jeff Hedges (15-9, 4-0 SoCon) won the 133-pound bout with a 10-2 major decision over Davidson’s Alex Radsky (5-11, 0-1 SoCon) and at 141 pounds, senior Ben Wilmore (3-8, 2-2 SoCon) shutout the Wildcat’s Jack Templeton (0-4, 0-1 SoCon) with a 16-0 technical fall to bring the score to 9-6 in favor of the Spartans.
The Spartans continued to dominate the mats as junior Marcus Hannah (9-4, 3-1 SoCon) took the 149-pound bout with a 10-5 decision over Carl Sandercock (6-10, 0-1 SoCon). At 157 pounds, senior Mark Ring (5-8, 2-1 SoCon) recorded his second fall of the season as he pinned Davidson’s Scott Matthews (2-11, 0-1 SoCon) in one minute, 22 seconds.
With UNCG leading, 18-6, sophomore Byron Sigmon (10-9, 3-1 SoCon) defeated Kevin Cook (3-8, 0-1 SoCon) with an 11-5 decision in the 165-pound weight class. The Wildcats tacked on their second win of the afternoon as Trebor Clavette (16-4, 1-0 SoCon) topped freshman Mikal McKee (9-10, 1-2 SoCon) with an 8-4 decision in the 174-pound bout.
The Spartans got back into rhythm as sophomore Nick Clark (4-9, 2-2 SoCon) won a close 3-2 decision over Sam O’Hair (17-8, 0-1 SoCon) in the 184-pound bout. The Spartans received an extra boost at 197 pounds as the Wildcats took a forfeit to give the win to senior Daren Burns (24-3, 4-0 SoCon) and six points to the Spartan team.
Senior Ryan Hsu (15-8, 4-0) closed out the dual with a 6-1 decision over Charlie Wolff (5-11, 0-1) to bring the final team score to UNCG 33, Davidson 9.
In the Davidson/Virginia match, the Cavaliers took all but one weight class to defeat the Wildcats, 45-4.
The Spartans jumped in front quickly against Virginia with fall victories in the first two rounds. Sophomore Mitchell Johnson (8-11, 2-2 SoCon) landed a 5:43 pin against UVA’s Ross Gitomer (27-8) and senior Jeff Hedges (16-9, 4-0 SoCon) tapped out tenth-ranked Eric Albright (16-5) in two minutes, 29 seconds.
UVA crept up slowly starting at the 141-pound round as Kellon Balum (20-6) won a 6-1 decision over senior Ben Wilmore (3-9, 2-2 SoCon). Shawn Harris (17-10) followed up with a decision of his own as he defeated junior Marcus Hannah (9-5, 3-1 SoCon) with a 3-6 decision at 149-pounds.
A 10-3 decision over senior Mark Ring (5-9, 2-1 SoCon) helped UVA’s Drew DiPasquale (11-8) bring him and the rest of his team to within three of the Spartans. With the score at 12-9 in favor of UNCG, sophomore Byron Sigmon (11-9, 3-1 SoCon) won a hard-fought and close 3-2 decision over Michael Chaires (25-6) to extend the lead to six.
In less than two and a half minutes, UNCG’s six-point lead disappeared as Chris Henrich (16-6) defeated freshman Mikal McKee (9-12, 1-3 SoCon) with a 2:23 fall victory to tie the score at 15-15.
The Cavaliers took the lead for the first time, and eventually held on, as tenth-ranked Rocco Caponi (28-1) pinned senior Nick Clark (4-10, 2-2 SoCon) in 1:17. UVA extended their lead as 19th-ranked Brent Jones (25-7) won a 13-7 decision over No. 11 Daren Burns (24-4, 4-0 SoCon) in the 197-pound bout.
In the final match of the day, junior Ryan Hsu (16-8, 4-0 SoCon) won a 5-1 decision over UVA’s Jack Danilkowicz (11-10). With the win the Spartans closed the gap, but the Cavaliers were able to hold on to win the dual, 24-18.
UNCG will hit the road on Tuesday as they take on American University on the campus of Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC and the following day they travel to Boiling Springs, NC to battle on the mats against Gardner-Webb.

Chattanooga 13, Oklahoma 21
NORMAN, Okla. --- The Oklahoma wrestling team pulled out the final three matches of the night Friday and won six of 10 overall to defeat Chattanooga, 21-13.
The Sooners, ranked No. 17 nationally, trailed Chattanooga 13-11 after 14th-ranked Lloyd Rogers gave the Mocs their first and only lead of the dual. Rogers edged Jeff James at 174 pounds, 6-4.
Oklahoma closed out its victory claiming the last three matches. The Sooners, 11-1, regained the lead at the 184-pound match. Seventh-ranked Joshua Weitzel scored a 13-0 major decision over UTC’s Josh Edmondson for a 15-13 Oklahoma lead.
Third-ranked Joel Flaggert edged UTC’s 14th-ranked Matt Koz at 197, 5-2, and Nathan Fernandez was two better than UTC’s Matt Lettner, 3-1 at heavyweight.
The Sooners soared to an early 8-0 lead on the strength of consecutive major decisions by Joey Fio at 125 and John Starzyk at 133. Steve Hromada, who fell 12-2 at 133, made his return for the 19th-ranked Mocs (5-5) after missing the last three duals because of an injury.
Cody Cleveland recorded Chattanooga’s first team points with a 14-6 major over 11th-ranked Zack Bailey in the 141-pound class. Cleveland scored six points in the third period of his match to distance himself from Bailey. UTC’s Joey Knox followed at 149 by shutting out No. 9 Will Rowe, 6-0, to trim the deficit to 8-7.
The teams traded wins in the next two matches. Oklahoma’s Chad Terry defeated Seth Garvin, 8-1 at 157, and UTC’s Nick Davis outpointed No. 20 Max Dean, 3-1 at 165.
Chattanooga opens Southern Conference competition Tuesday at The Citadel in Charleston, S.C.

Appalachian State 10, Virginia 24
BOONE, N.C. - The Appalachian State wrestling team closed a two-match homestand with a 24-10 defeat at the hands of ACC foe UVA. Appalachian never led in the match, but was competitive throughout, losing two matches by only one point. With the loss, ASU falls to 7-8 (1-0, SoCon) and UVA improves to 11-3 (0-0, ACC) on the season
The match commenced with the 197-pound bout where freshman Dylan Temple was defeated 10-4 by UVA’s No. 19 ranked Brent Jones to give the Cavaliers an early 3-0 lead. At 285 pounds, Jared Campbell earned a third period escape and a UVA stalling penalty to best Jack Danilkowicz 2-1 to even the team match at 3-3. In the 125-pound bout, Corey Hulsey dropped a majority decision, 12-3, to UVA’s Ross Gitomer. The 4-point victory gave UVA the 7-3 lead after three bouts.
At 133-pounds, senior Terreyl Williams was the hard-luck loser, 4-3, to Cavalier Eric Albright. The loss put ASU down 10-3. In the 141-pound bout, Marcus Cox was on the short end of a majority decision, 15-6 to UVA’s Nick Nelson. At the halfway point, UVA widened the margin to 14-3. Senior Scott Ervin secured a majority decision over Pat Riley of UVA with a 10-2 victory. The win cut the UVA lead to 14-7.
Senior Eddie Hutchinson continued the ASU rally with a 6-0 victory at 157-pounds over Brent Fiorito to cut the lead to 14-10 in favor of UVA. Senior Tommy Hutchinson dropped a close 2-1 match to Michael Chaires, extending the UVA margin to 17-10 with two matches remaining.
In the match’s penultimate bout, 174-pounds, senior Neal Martin was defeated 11-4 by Chris Henrich of UVA, extending the Cavalier lead to 20-10 and clinching victory for UVA. Freshman Austin Trotman fell in a major decision to close the match, 8-0 to Rocco Caponi. The victory gave UVA the 24-10 triumph over the Mountaineers.
Appalachian will now travel to Chattanooga to face the Mocs on Sunday, Jan. 27. The conference match starts at 2 p.m.
