Midlands Championship

Chattanooga

EVANSTON, Ill. --- Chattanooga wrestlers Cody Cleveland and Joey Knox earned fourth-place finishes Sunday night at the 45th Annual Midlands Championships and helped the 10th-ranked Mocs to a sixth-place finish in the team standings.

Cleveland, a sophomore from Tullahoma, Tenn., wrestled eight times in the consolation bracket at 141 pounds after going 1-1 in the main draw.  He reached the Third-place match by pinning Harvard’s eighth-seeded Corey Jantzen at 4:49.  Top-seeded Alex Tsirtsis of Iowa scored a 12-1 major decision over Cleveland for third place.

Knox made the championship quarterfinals before dropping to the consolations.  After three wins including a pin of third-seeded Mitch Mueller of Iowa State, the Dublin, Ga., sophomore dropped a 5-3 decision to Missouri’s Josh Wagner, seeded No. 7.

“We wrestled above our seeds at every weight,” UTC Head Coach Chris Bono said.  “This was a good gauge for the NCAA Tournament because it was a two-day tournament with two-day weigh-ins.  Cody Cleveland had an incredible tournament and wrestled 10 matches.  Joey Knox was outstanding as well.”

The Mocs also earned three seventh-place finishes and an eighth-place Sunday.

Picking up seventh-place finishes for the Mocs were Steve Hromada (133), Lloyd Rogers (174) and Matt Koz (197).  Josh Edmondson (184) notched an eighth-place finish.  Hromada won four matches.  Rogers, the eighth seed, defeated fourth-seeded Nick Hayes of Northwestern, 9-8, and Koz won a 9-5 decision over No. 7 Joe Williams of Michigan State.

The Mocs finished with 78.5 team points and moved into sixth place in the team standings after holding down the 12th spot following the first day.  Iowa took the team title in the 52 team field.  Iowa State was second followed by future Chattanooga opponent Central Michigan.

Appalachian State

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Appalachian State wrestling team finds themselves in 18th place out of 28 teams in the fifth-annual Southern Scuffle. ASU has eight wrestlers still in the competition, all remaining in the wrestle-back bracket. Appalachian entered the tournament with 18 entries.

Senior Scott Ervin, the No. 4 seed in the 149-pound bracket, made ASU’s deepest charge into the tournament thus-far. Ervin won his first two matches by 9-0 and 3-0 margins. Ervin was defeated in the round-of-16 by Hofstra’s Mitch Smith, 7-2.

Senior brothers Tommy Hutchinson and Eddie Hutchinson each won their opening matches before falling in the second round. Tommy fell 5-3 to the No. 3 seed in the 165-pound bracket while Eddie fell 9-2 to the No. 5 seed at 157-pounds. Fellow senior Terreyl Williams was victorious over UNC Greensboro’s Casey Boyle, 17-8, but fell in the second round. Freshman Austin Trotman took a 10-4 first round victory before falling 7-5 in overtime to be relegated to the wrestle-back bracket.

Sophomore Frank Celorrio was pinned in his first match, but rallied to win his first wrestle-back match to advance to the second day. Freshmen Dylan Temple and John Allen Griswold both reached the second day in the 184 and 197-pound brackets respectively. Griswold was pinned in the opening round, but atoned with a pin in the opening round of the wrestle-back. Temple fell in the opening round 6-2 then won 6-2 in the wrestle-back.

Senior Neal Martin was sent home early after closing the day with a 1-2 record in the 174-pound bracket. Martin, the No. 9 seed, claimed a 9-5 victory but suffered losses by 4-10 and 3-4 deficits. Junior heavyweight Jared Campbell also dropped his opening match before rallying in the wrestle-back to earn a win. Campbell fell 1-3, then won 4-2, but lost in his third match of the day, falling 3-9. Sophomore Brett Houghton went 1-2 at 165-pounds

Freshman Glen Holmes notched an opening round victory at 184-pounds, 8-1, before falling in consecutive matches ending his tournament. Cooke suffered a tech fall in the first round, 0-16, but advanced to the second round of the wrestle-back due to a medical forfeit. Cooke suffered a majority decision loss, 3-11 eliminating him from the tournament.

Five Mountaineers failed to notch victories. Juniors Derrick Calloway and Ryan Scott were eliminated from the 285 and 141-pound classes. Sophomores Corey Hulsey and Mark Maya competed at 125 and 141-pounds respectively. Freshman Chip Powell was win-less at 149-pounds in his hometown.

Wrestling will resume on Sunday morning at 9 a.m. The Tournament, hosted by UNC Greensboro, is being held at the Greensboro Coliseum, tickets are still available. Check www.southernscuffle.com for brackets updated throughout the day.

GREENSBORO, N.C. - Thanks to a fifth place effort by senior Scott Ervin at 149-pounds, the Appalachian State wrestling was able to finish in 17th place out of 28 total teams. ASU narrowly missed claiming top honors for any SoCon squad, finishing 5.5 pounds shy of host UNC Greensboro.

The No. 4 seed, Ervin made a nice run on Championship Sunday, winning five of his six matches to advance to the medal round. In the opener, Ervin defeated the No. 7 seed by a tech fall, 17-0. Next up was the No. 2 seed Darrion Caldwell, ranked No. 3 in the USA Today/NWCA NCAA Division I poll. Ervin pinned Caldwell after 4:15 to stay alive in the tournament. A pair of 5-1 and 3-0 victories put Ervin in position to take home a medal at the end of the tournament.

A loss at the hands of the No. 5 seed, Adam Hall of Bosie State, relegated Ervin to the fifth place match. In the medal match, Ervin was able to exact revenge on Mitch Smith of Hofstra, who defeated Ervin on Saturday evening. The medal is Ervin’s third of the season, the fifth place finish joins Ervin’s gold medals from the Reno Tournament of Champions and Keystone Classic earlier in the season.

Freshman Dylan Temple was one of three Mountaineers to win a match on Championship Sunday. Temple earned a 6-5 decision over Erik Schuth of Ohio to proceed in the 184-pound wrestle-back bracket. Temple fell in the next round to UNC’s Nick Tenpenny, 1-4, eliminating the ASU freshman. Senior Eddie Hutchinson advanced to Sunday’s second round of wrestle-backs at 157-pounds when his opponent forfeited, giving Hutchinson the pass. In the next round, Hutchinson was downed by Thomas Scotton of UNC, 3-5.

Sophomore Frank Celorrio failed to advance in the 125-pound wrestle-back bracket, 2-5 to UVA’s Anthony Burke. Senior Tommy Hutchinson (Brandon, Fla./Brandon) was eliminated in the 165-pound wrestle-back by Edinboro’s Paul
Paddock, 1-2. Freshman John Allen Griswold was bounced from the 197-pound wrestle-back by Binghamton’s Corey Waite, 4-7.

Senior Terreyl Williams suffered a 5-13 majority decision loss to Bloomsburg’s Jason Guffey. Freshman
Austin Trotman, who advanced to Sunday in the 184-pound wrestle-back, was forced to forfeit his match due to injury.

Appalachian will now return to Boone before traveling to Arlington, Texas for the Lone Star Duals. Appalachian will compete in four dual matches against opponents to be determined starting at 10 a.m. on January 5.

GREENSBORO, NC ? After two days of wrestling, the team from Minnesota walked away with the 2007 UNCG Southern Scuffle championship and claimed their third team title. The Golden Gophers also won four individual titles. UNCG had four wrestlers place as senior Jeff Hedges along with juniors Kane Smith and Ryan Hsu came away with eighth-place finishes. Placing fourth, senior Daren Burns was the top finisher for the Spartans .

At 133 pounds, Hedges lost a tough match to the No. 2 seed and sixth-ranked Mack Reiter of Minnesota in the championship quarterfinal round. Despite going into the third period down 13-2, Hedges gave Minnesota a 30-second scare as he got him on his back and held on until Reiter was able to regain position. Reiter went on to win the match with a 14-5 major decision to advance to the semifinal round.

In the fifth-round of wrestlebacks, Hedges held off Boise State’s Corey Fish to win 3-1 decision, but he couldn’t keep up the pace in the following round as he fell short to Andrew Hochstrasser (unattached) in a 7-4 decision. He finished eighth following a 10-3 loss to No. 8 seed Ricky Deubel of Edinboro.

In the 197-pound bracket, Burns pinned his way into the semifinal round with a 3:44 fall over the No. 6 seed, David Mendoza of Old Dominion in the second period. He went into second period behind, 3-2, but with Mendoza down on the mat, Burns was able to gain enough top-control to lay the shoulder to the mat for the count.

In the championship semifinal round, Burns lost a tough battle to Maryland’s eleventh-ranked 197-pounder. Taylor Hudson, the No. 2 seed and the eventual champion, took control early in the match and was able to hold Burns off for a 14-4 major decision.

A drop into the consolation bracket pitted the No. 3 seed against the No. 4 seed. Burns, ranked 12th nationally, made short work of Edinboro’s 15th-ranked Patrick Bradshaw with a 6-2 decision. He finished fourth following a 12-4 major decision loss to the No. 1 seed, Joseph Rovelli of Hofstra.

Burns is now 92-30 in his career. He needs just six more wins to tie UNCG’s all-time career win record of 98-25 held by Joe Stanton (1993-97).

Heavyweight Ryan Hsu dropped a tough 2-1 decision to No. 2 and ninth-ranked Zach Hammond of Cornell. For the most part it was a stand-up match, but a few quick moves gave Cornell the points and the ticket into the championship semifinals.

In the fifth-round of the 285-pound wrestlebacks, Hsu won an 8-3 decision over Joe Nord of Minnesota to push him into the consolation quarterfinals. In the quarters, he was defeated by the No. 3 seed and 16th-ranked, Mike Spaid of Bloomsburg in a 3-1 decision and he was overcome by North Carolina’s No. 8 seed, Justin Dobies following a 5:44 fall. Hsu finished eighth among 40 wrestlers.

Junior Kane Smith continued through the consolation bracket following a 9-1 major decision victory over Robert Johnston of Navy and in the fifth-round of wrestlebacks, he defeated Eric Shaw of Bloomsburg with a 3-2 decision. Smith faced Edinboro’s Bradshaw in the consolation quarterfinals, but was unable to hold strong. He dropped a 12-5 decision to send Bradshaw into the consolation semifinal round and onto the mat to face UNCG’s Burns.

In the seventh-place round, Smith was unable to finish the match and had to take a medical forfeit in the second period. He finished in eighth-place.

In the championship round, the No. 1 seed and No. 3 nationally-ranked 125-pound Jason Ness (Minnesota) pinned the No. 3 seed and thirteenth-ranked Mike Sees of Bloomsburg in 5:48. VMI

GREENSBORO, N.C.- In their first competition since returning from winter furlough, the VMI wrestling team competed at the Southern Scuffle, hosted by UNC Greensboro at the Greensboro Coliseum.

Senior Jeremy Adams (Manassas, Va./Osbourn Park) accounted for the Keydets’ furthest run in the 29-team tournament, as the 125-pounder won a pair of matches before being pinned by top-seeded Jayson Ness of Minnesota, who pinned each of the six opponents he faced on his way to the title. Adams then dropped a 7-4 decision in the wrestlebacks to Virginia’s Ross Gitomer, finishing among the final 12 competitors at 125 lbs.

Redshirt senior David Metzler (Dayton, Va./Turner-Ashby) also won a pair of matches to begin his tournament, scoring major decisions against Lock Haven’s Clint Shirk (10-2) and UNCG’s Ben Wilmore (8-0). Metzler then bowed out to Hofstra’s Charles Griffin, the 141-pound class’s top seed, by a 15-2 score. However, Metzler was unable to continue in the wrestlebacks on day two due to an injury.

In other action, freshman Curtis Moore won his first match at 184 pounds, shutting out Liberty’s Nick Knowles 3-0 before dropping a 10-2 major decision to third-seeded Ryan Goodman of N.C. State. In the consolation bracket, Moore then dropped a 1-0 decision to ODU’s Scott Cust. Meanwhile at heavyweight, both freshman Josh Wine (Fredericksburg, Va./Massaponax) and junior Leon Barrow (Williamsburg, Va./Lafayette) won narrow decisions in the consolation bracket, while Barrow dropped his next match and Wine was forced to withrdraw with an injury.

“We ran into some very good teams at the Southern Scuffle this weekend, and it just shows you how much better the tournament continues to get every year,” said VMI head wrestling coach John Trudgeon. “We had some guys that wrestled good matches, but either dropped close decisions or just ended up with bad draws. Dustin McCabe ended up drawing the top seed at 174, then wrestled a guy from George Mason (Randy Oates) that he lost to at Pembroke, and did much better, but still lost. Freshman Jayme Gordon lost a couple of close matches at 165, and then Dave and Josh both had to pull out with injuries. So we’ll get back to work, put the pieces back together, and get back to training for the State Championships this weekend.”

The Keydets return to action on Saturday morning, participating in the Virginia Intercollegiates, hosted by Virginia in Charlottesville.
