ASU Defeated UNCG 22-14 in Conference Action

Nationals Duals

Chattanooga 2, Penn State 37

Chattanooga 11, Northwestern 31

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa --- The 16th-ranked Chattanooga wrestling team made an early exit Saturday in its first trip to the NWCA/Cliff Keen National Duals.  The Mocs fell to the nation’s top-ranked team, Penn State, 37-2 in the preliminary round then were defeated 31-11 by ninth-ranked Northwestern in the consolation bracket.

Chattanooga, now 5-4 overall, never led in either dual although it had better results against Northwestern, claiming three of the 10 matches.

Twelve of the Wildcats’ team points came from UTC forfeits.  Junior Shawn Cordell, subbing for the injured Steve Hromada at 133 pounds, was injured in his earlier match against Penn State and was unable to compete against Northwestern.  With the decision in hand heading into the heavyweight match, UTC forfeited the last position.

Cody Cleveland got the Mocs on the scoreboard at 141 pounds.  The sophomore defeated Keith Sulzer 7-2 to trim Northwestern’s lead to 10-3.  Seth Garvin’s 6-4 win over Kyle Bartin at 157 got UTC to within 13-6.

Josh Edmondson provided the Mocs with their highest individual point total on the day, pinning Adil Kolovic in the second period to slice the deficit to 22-12.

In the 197-pound match, UTC’s Matt Koz led third-ranked Mike Tamillow, 3-2 late in the third period.  But Koz was docked a point for stalling with one second remaining in regulation.  Tamillow gained the takedown in overtime for a 5-3 victory.

Chattanooga managed only one win against top-ranked Penn State in the opener.  Senior Lloyd Rogers posted a 12-6 victory over David Erwin at 174 pounds for UTC’s lone points of the match.  A team point was deducted from the Mocs after Phil Davis defeated No. 13 Koz, 4-2 at 197, giving the Lions a 31-2 margin with one match to go.

The Lions, 6-0, used two pins, a major decision and a forfeit for the lopsided victory.

Mark McKnight began the dual with a pin at 125 pounds over UTC’s Javier Maldonado.  The Mocs lost six points at 133 and fell behind 12-0 when Cordell couldn’t finish the match because on an injury.  Jake Strayer and Bubba Jenkins extended Penn State’s advantage to 18-0 with back-to-back decisions at 141 and 149 over Cleveland and Joey Knox respectively.

Dan Vallimont scored a 15-7 major decision over Garvin at 157, and Dave Rella defeated Nick Davis 5-1 at 165 for a 25-0 Lions lead before Rogers got the Mocs on the scoreboard.

The Mocs faced a No. 1-ranked team for the third time in five years.  UTC took on top-ranked Oklahoma State in Stillwater, Okla., in both 2003 and 2004.

Chattanooga travels to Norman, Okla., next week to face Oklahoma Friday at 4 p.m. ET.

VMI 21, Campbell 14

VMI 12, George Mason 29

FAIRFAX, Va.- Freshman Jayme Gordon pinned both opponents he faced to lead the VMI wrestling team to a tri-meet split in non-conference wrestling action Saturday afternoon at the George Mason Field House. The Keydets (4-2) scored a 21-14 win against Campbell in the opening match and dropped a 29-12 decision to Mason in the nightcap.

In the opening match against Campbell, senior Jeremy Adams began the afternoon at 125 pounds, scoring three takedowns in the first period and holding on for a 9-6 victory against sophomore C.J. Gittens. At 133, Ryan Goodsell broke a scoreless tie midway through the opening period with a takedown, before junior Trevour Smith cut the margin to 2-1 with an escape early in the second. Takedowns late in the second and third periods pushed the final margin to 6-1 in favor of the Keydet freshman, marking Goodsell’s second win over Smith this season and giving the Keydets a 6-0 advantage.

In the 141-pound match, VMI senior Tyler Anthony dropped a 5-2 decision to CU’s Kelin Bidelspach, before redshirt senior David Metzler rode a strong first-period performance, including over two minutes of riding time, on his way to a 6-3 victory despite a late charge from CU’s Robert Matthews, giving VMI a 9-3 lead through four matches.

Senior Vince Cole dropped an 11-0 major decision at 157 to CU freshman Jake Fose, cutting VMI’s lead to 9-7. However, the momentum swung back to the Keydets over the next two matches, thanks to wins at both 165 and 174. At 165, Gordon posted his second pin of the season, coming at the 5:49 mark against sophomore Chris Mazzatta, giving the Keydets a 15-7 lead with four matches remaining. Senior Dustin McCabe followed with a convincing 8-1 triumph against CU sophomore Dillon Landi at 174, while freshman Curtis Moore suffered an 8-3 loss to CU junior Kyle Higgins at 184, pushing the score to 18-10 in favor of the Keydets with two matches remaining.

At 197, CU freshman Parker Burns scored a 9-0 major decision against VMI freshman Ronnie Ellsworth to cut the VMI lead to 18-14 heading to the heavyweight match, however, Keydet junior Leon Barrow used takedowns in each of the first two periods, along with over three minutes of riding time to secure the dual victory for VMI with a 5-2 decision against CU senior Rob Yoder.

The win against the Camels marked the eighth win in nine tries in the series between the two schools, while it marked the first meeting between the teams in five years.

The Keydets forfeited the 125-pound match to open up the match against the Patriots, before Goodsell fell behind early against Mason’s Joel Coughlin and couldn’t recover, suffering a 16-6 major decision loss at 133 to give Mason a 10-0 advantage.

Anthony fought through a scoreless first period against Mason’s Will Powars at 141, before an escape gave Powars a 1-0 advantage early in the second. Anthony answered by escaping early in the third to knot the match at one, and that is how it stayed at the end of regulation. In the first overtime period, Anthony twice nearly scored a takedown before Powars recorded the points with seven seconds remaining to win, 3-1. The win avenged an earlier loss by Powars to Anthony, and gave Mason a 13-0 advantage.

In the 149-pound match, Metzler suffered a 9-4 setback against Mason freshman Brandon Bucher. At 157, freshman John Held took a 6-5 lead with a takedown 20 seconds into the third period and remained in control throughout the rest of the period, until a two-point reversal was awarded just as time expired to give Mason’s Aaron Keeton a 7-6 win. The win was the second in a week for Keeton over Held, as the two had wrestled to an 8-6 overtime decision at the Virginia Intercollegiates last Saturday.

VMI scored their first win of the match at 165, when Gordon pinned freshman Andrew Rock at the 2:20 mark, cutting the Patriot lead to 19-6. At 174, McCabe took a 2-1 advantage into the second period in his fourth match this season against Randy Oates, having come up empty on each occasion. Oates tied the match at two early in the second, then took down McCabe midway through the period to take a 4-2 lead into the third period. The final two minutes passed without a score, while the riding time point gave Oates a 5-2 win to extend Mason’s lead to 22-6.

In the 184-pound match, Moore entered the third period tied at two against Mason sophomore Bill Widener, but suffered a takedown with one minute remaining while Widener rode him out, bringing the final tally to 5-2. Mason freshman Cayle Byers scored a 14-4 major decision against Ellsworth at 197, before Mason forfeited the heavyweight match to wrap up the day, bringing the final margin to 29-12.

“We still have a ton of work to do,” said VMI head coach John Trudgeon. “We’re throwing a lot of freshmen out there, and they’re working hard, but they’re just not necessarily doing all of the things that we’d like to see. We’d rather be throwing juniors and seniors out there, but that’s just not what we have right now. But we had some guys step up today, Ty and Dave both wrestled out of their weight classes, and Jayme Gordon put himself in good positions to give us 12 points.”

The Keydets return to action on Wednesday evening, opening up their Southern Conference schedule at UNC Greensboro at 7 p.m.
